    Interview mit Michael (zu Trust)
    (Progressive Newsletter Nr.55 04/06)
excerpts from an interview with Michael Sadler (Vocals, Keyboards, Bass)

During the recording process of "Network" you had about 70 song ideas, whereas only 10 of them made in on the album. Did you had the same amount of ideas for "Trust" and how did you decide what should be included on the album?

I'm not sure of the number this time, but "Trust" was no different than usual in terms of having more than enough potential songs to choose from. As always, deciding on which songs would be on the album wasn't very difficult. Once you decide what kind of album you want to make, it becomes obvious which songs want to live together!

On "Trust" a lot more keyboard solos can be heard than on the previous albums. What was this reason for this "back-to-the-roots" approach?

After featuring the guitar more on the last few albums, we felt it was time once again to blend the guitar and keyboards, much the way we had done in the earlier days. It was also a matter of listening to what the fans wanted to hear.

"Trust" will also be available as a special edition with a bonus DVD. What will be included on this DVD?

The bonus DVD will feature some behind the scenes "making of" footage as well as a few interviews with the members of the band.

"It's your life" will be the first single of the album. Is there still a chance for your music to be played on radio, where everything's dominated by "format" radio, which just played the usual boring charts stuff?

You can never tell whether or not a single will be successful or even get played on the radio for that matter, especially in the case of a band like ours. But I do believe there are 2 or 3 potential airplay songs on "Trust". One can only cross one's fingers and wait and see.

"Trust" is also the first album for the new company Inside Out. What were the reasons the change of the label?

Changing labels at this point in our careers was a natural thing to do. Very often, when a band is signed to a label for a number of years and the contract comes up for renewal, one or both parties will decide whether or not to continue their relationship. In our case, both the record company and the band thought it best to part company and move on.

What were the reasons to return "home" and record the new album in Canada again?

After recording in a familiar setting for a number of years, we felt it was time to "shake things up" a little, much the same way we decided to record "World's Apart" in England after doing the first 3 albums in the same location.

Another album, another drummer, what were the reasons for the line-up change this time?

Changing drummers again has drawn some rather humorous comparisons to "Spinal Tap"! The fact is, we were very happy with Christian Simpson & felt that he would be with the band indefinitely. But unfortunately he developed a medical condition that sadly prevents him from playing, not only with Saga, but playing the drums at all. He will be missed.

In between "Network" and "Trust" you and Jim Gilmour both released solo albums. How did the works on theses albums influence the work on "Trust"?

I think our solo works had little or no influence on the work on "Trust". Solo works are meant to be an outlet for members of a band to express a side of themselves outside of the parameters that exist within the established style of the band they work with.

Any plans for other special releases or DVDs, especially the recording of "World's apart" in Pratteln, in the next future?

There are a number of surprises planned for the fans in the very near future regarding CD & DVD releases! Stay tuned!

On the previous tours you've played all the "Chapters" and "World's apart" in its entirety. Any special plans for this tour?

    Wouldn't that spoil the surprise?

I've read about the idea of doing a kind of musical out of the songs of "Generation 13". Is this project still in the works?

The dream of one day presenting "Generation 13" as a stage production is still very much alive. The problem is, it's a very involved undertaking & requires a great deal of organization. But I'm positive it will happen one day!
