Woman's 'shark tale' has happy ending
'Popular' shark dish at local restaurant tossed overboard by activist
Nikki Wernke hoped her shark tale would end happily.
The Dubuque resident created an on-line petition in June, asking Da Vinci's restaurant to cease serving a meal that included a threatened shark species called Mako.
"I waited until I had 100 signatures, then I e-mailed (Da Vinci's co-owner) Scott Neuwoehner," Wernke said.
Neuwoehner responded by e-mail soon after: "I am quite impressed that you went through this much trouble to make this happen. Your efforts will not be without reward, we will not be ordering Mako shark again!"
Neuwoehner said later that Da Vinci's management was unaware of the information on shark until Wernke alerted them.
"Our decision had a lot to do with that information," Neuwoehner said, "but the fact the she was so passionate about getting that resolved was equally important. I appreciate people who are passionate about their causes and felt she deserved to be rewarded for her efforts. Shark has been popular, but we are happy to remove it and focus on other non-threatened species."
Wernke is relieved.
"It is a great thing that they did," she said of Da Vinci's management. "I am so glad they care about their customers and the environment."
Why all the fuss?
Despite being a native of landlocked Dubuque, Wernke has been interested in sharks since childhood. She completed her first shark dive off the north coast of Oahu, Hawaii, two years ago, at age 33.
Her interest in sharks has prompted some personal research. She has learned from the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources that most of the shortfin Mako sharks served at American restaurants are caught by what is called a pelagic drift gill net, a net that can inadvertently snare ocean sunfish, blue sharks and albacore tuna. Endangered turtles can be caught in the nets as well.
Wernke plans to lobby seafood distribution companies next in a continuing bid to increase protection of sharks.
"If we can change people's mindsets from 'Jaws' to conservation, then maybe there would be international agreement and enforcement on laws in effect," she said.
Wernke learned about the presence of Mako sharks on local menus in June. To develop her on-line petition, she drew inspiration from travel writer Patric Douglas, also the chief executive officer of San Francisco-based Shark Diver, an outdoor adventure firm.
