Born to a fairly well-off sailing merchant family, Lirarlin Tenel was quite at home among the docks in Tanchico, Tarabon. Having a tongue to prove it, she could hold her own with the boys as a child growing up. On occation, she'd even be mistaken as one, though she never minded nor cared.
She loved traveling with her father on one of his few ships and seeing what other countries were like. She found the people fasinating and would make friends where ever she went, which would often land her in hot water seeing as how she had a nitch for mischief.
But when she was 15, things changed. It was a crisp, beautiful day and she was hiding in a lifeboat, body entwinded with Nicaia, her best friend and first love. Her father had been looking for her, and when he did find her, his face was a mix of shock, confusion and horror: his beloved daughter in the arms of another woman. Dreading the worst, Lira fled.
Grabbing a few personal items, she made to leave the city not knowing where she was going. Only making it a block however, she was stopped by a women who pulled her into an alley. After a short introduction, she learned this mysterious woman was an Aes Sedai, and of the Red Ajah, and who had witnessed what had taken place at the dock. Confused, Lira asked why she had stopped her. The Aes Sedai had been watching her for some time now, and had noticed the "strange" things that would sometimes happen to her. Because of those occurances, she was quite certain Lira could touch saidar, and therefore had the potential to become Aes Sedai. With that, Lira found herself on her way to Tar Valon.
Once in the White Tower, she caught on and learned quickly. While there, she met Lyuna Ishizu. The two soon become close friends and near inseperable. It didn't take long for the rumors to start about a "pillow friendship", to which neither denied nor acknowledged, only grined at each other. When the time finally came for Lira to choose her ajah, she naturally picked Red.
It wasn't long before Lyuna told Lira about her and Moiraine's plan to go to Manatheren. Lira was eager to help and followed Lyuna east, where she continues her help.
