    Unknown type plate...
After a little walk with my metal detector through the woods near Amersfoort, Holland we did found a lot of pieces of aluminium, a few blown .303's cartridges (by heat?) and 2 intact .303 cartridges with 1941 headstamps . This could be a crashsite, but we searched all over the internet and didn't find anything about a crash on that location.
The second time we found on the same location a lot of more pieces of aluminum and this twisted type plate. After cleaning it up we saw some text and numbers.

After a search on the internet we found The Aviation Forum and we discovered that "VACH" probably stands for "Vickers Armstrong Chester". The guys from The Aviation Forum informed us about this board. Hopefully can someone tell us on this board what the numbers mean or where the plate is from?

A little explainasion about the picture (not all the numbers and text are visible, I shot the picture with my phone camera): On the top right corner "MK IV", under "MK IV" we see "VACH", under "VACH" we see "1217A". Then there is a text "MODEL NUMBERS" with the numbers "785", "867" and "1100".

    Many thanks in advance!

    Greetings from Holland,
    Danny

    Hi Danny,
    welcome to our board.
sometimes the crash location was not known when a plane went missing and so there are no records for it. its possible you are finding parts of one of these

is 8km SSE from Amersfoort too far to be your crashsite?
i can find a Wellington MK IV built in Chester that is reported crashed in that area.
shot down by flak on the night of 27th / 28th June 1942.
its code is Z1610 of 150 sqd RAF.

    Regards
    Roy

I did found that plane on Lost Bombers, 8km did match but it's not SSE of Amersfoort. And that plane crashed in june 1942. I presume they didn't kept the ammo for an half year in a plane (the gunner would be bored during the flight(s) I think ;)).

    Danny,
i didnt think it would be that easy :D

the ammuntion would not have to be new. there were stockpiles of ammo. it might not have been used for many months, perhaps years after it was made.
all you can tell from the 303s is that it crashed no earlier than 1942.
    i have some 50 cal from a B17. crashed April 1945. ammo dated 1943.

    Cheers
    Roy

    Danny,

Roy is right on the ammo ! Recovering a Wellington which crashed at Landsmeer in 1941 we found ammo dated 1940...

Ok, I believe you guys! ;)

But how accurate is the database of Lost Bombers? Approx. 8km from Amersfoort is correct, but it's not SSE of Amersfoort. Maybe it is the Wellington in the database and did my grandfather saw a crash of a Stirling. I can't ask him again, because my grandfather passed away years ago...

If the weather gets better we will search again on that spot with a deepseeker and hopefully we will find more parts of the aircraft.

Hey, the text has changed Paul! ;)

But I thinks thats the one my grandfather saw. The Stirling did crash in the evening and the Wellington did crash at night.
