QUINCY - Allen Mullaney of Quincy is still sore after landing a 536-pound thresher shark during the Oak Bluffs Monster Shark Derby on Martha’s Vineyard.

‘‘He was just a massive fish,’’ said Mullaney, 49, who fought the shark for four hours after hooking it. ‘‘It’s probably one of the hardest things I’ve ever done.’’

‘‘Two hours into the fight we knew we had something substantial,’’ said Christopher Jankins, who, with Mullaney, chartered a Cohasset sport-fishing boat, the Castafari, for the weekend tournament. ‘‘Three hours in, we were wishing the line would break.’’

The shark, 16½ feet long, was the largest shark landed during the tournament, the results of which were determined by the size of a contestant’s total catch.

The boat Mullaney and Jankins were on, captained by Damon Sacco, took second place on the strength of the thresher alone. First place went to Bob DeCosta, captain of a Nantucket boat, the Provider. His haul included two sharks that each weighed about 300 pounds.

Conservationists and animal-rights activists protested at the 21st annual shark-catching derby.

‘‘Thresher sharks are still abundant as juveniles,’’ said Sean Van Sommeran, executive director of the Pelagic Shark Research Foundation, ‘‘but the big, heavy-class animals are fewer and farther between.’’

The World Conservation Union considers thresher sharks ‘‘threatened.’’

Allen Mullaney of Quincy caught this 536-pound thresher shark during the Oak Bluffs Monster Shark Derby off Martha’s Vineyard.

John Grandy of the Humane Society of the United States said sharks ‘‘aren’t like other fish. They bear young alive, and they don’t reproduce until late in life.’’

But Mullaney said the tournament is just a sporting event, and one that is regulated with its ecological impact in mind.

‘‘You have to love the sport of fishing to understand,’’ he said. ‘‘It was just me against him.’’

Mullaney said the shark’s meat would not be wasted.
