I can't help but notice that much of the female adoration for Zep on these boards seems to be focused on their looks. Not that this is unexpected or necessarily wrong, but how many women would seriously call themselves Zep fans if all the Zep boys looked like Peter Grant?
How much is the music itself a draw for the female fans?
well, me being "young" at 16, i cannot speak for any one but myself on this particular subject. So, i will answer it simply.
i never really cared for their looks until i joined this "forum". i actually never knew what/ how any of them looked like. all i knew was their music. and to me, at the age of 12, i knew they were a great band. so, in all respect, i can call myself a "true" fan, according to your post.

Well I believe your answer. But I am still convinced that most young female fans of Zep would not exist if the Zep boys were ugly.

It almost hurts to have people think we may not be true led zeppelin fans. I'm 16 and i didn't really start getting into led zepp untill like a year ago. But when i was really young i would always hear their songs like stairway to heaven and it would send chills right down my back, and it still does to this day. Yes i think Jimmy Page is a gorgeus hunk of meat ( ) But i never appreciated music untill i really started to like led zeppelin. And i would never sit there and be mesmorized by the sound of the drums untill i heard Bonzo. I love led zeppelin's music and i am a true fan
by the way, i never liked justin timberlake.....he has ugly hair

Being female I'd be lying if I said their image had little impact on how much I enjoy the band. However, I have a friend who thinks they're butt ugly yet still likes their music. In fact I think most women my age and younger don't find them attractive. I happen to be a musician myself and the music means alot more to me than looks. I'd be safe in saying that I would like their music no matter what they looked like. I think I'm the exception, though.

I'm an older female and I've gone through the whole musical highlights of Led Zeppelin so I'm working on the looks highpoints now because back then I never got to see all the photos and read about all the interesting LZ moments.
It's interesting to rediscover them from this side of the story.
Music for me is the first draw and then if the package is nice-- well what can I say. A band's image has a lot to do with the type of people it attracts but the ones hanging around afterwards are the real fans.
I noticed PZ that you seem to have this idea that women can't understand Led Zeppelin or the music. Women are a lot deeper than that. Besides, most Led Zeppelin songs are somewhat about women and love so of course we can relate.
You do know that talent is sexy in its self...and there is that belief that guys join bands to meet women

I didn't get into them because of the way they looked. I honestly didn't even know what they looked like until about a month after they became my favorite band. I love their music, will always hold a place in my heart for it.
The musical aspect always came first. But I must say, Jimmy's rather persuasive looks were definately a lovely surpise when I finally saw a picture of the band.
If he weren't gorgeous, I truly wouldn't care. Hell, I've gotten to where, if I just completely love a band, I will find myself attracted to even the ugliest men.

i'm sure there are many people who became interested in led zeppelin because of their looks. i definitely heard them before i saw them. i would not be this crazy for them if all i really liked was how they looked. of course, their looks don't hurt - they're a great looking group of guys. their talent, however, far exceeds that.
there was a great article around for awhile, though the link i now have for it is dead. it was all about women and their attraction to led zeppelin (why there are fewer female fans, how they feel about the band, etc). it was called "Rethinking Issues of Gender and Sexuality in Led Zeppelin: A Woman's View of Pleasure and Power in Hard Rock" ... great title . it was long - i read it on the plane when i went to england this summer. it could easily be written off as an over-analysis of the subject, but has anyone else read it?

We've had this topic before and obviously the young ladies on here are as true of fans as ANYONE. Most of them got into the music of Zep first and their looks second, so that proves it.
P.S. young girls honestly do admire the music of Justin Timberlake.

Im 17 and for me, its always music first. I have to like the music first to like them I can't just see a picture of a band and be all like "Ooo im gonna like this band just because theres hott guys in it" Theres bands in todays music that have some pretty good looking guys in it but I don't like the music they play. Hell, I remember when I was younger and seeing pictures of young Jimmy and Robert and this was obviously way before I even thought of Zeppelin as an awesome band and not taking the slightest interest in them what so ever same with other bands I like too. If you think about it, its kinda like "Almost Famous"(if any of you have seen it) where Penny Lane says they're "Band Aids" who love the band for their music and not "groupies" wanting a band for just sex, they're there for the music and thats why they liked the guys of the band. Then after I like the music, I do more research on them and THEN I find the picture and then thats where the attraction starts . So its not the members that grab our attetion, well at least not for me, its the music that counts.

I didn't know what Robert Plant even looked like until after 2 months of my interest in Zep and even then I wasn't wowed by his looks. My appreciation for that aspect has grown by leaps and bounds, though, and it just makes it even more fun to love Zep. It's always about the music though, first and foremost.
Oh, and I'm just the tender age of 19.

For me, same as what the others said basically.
I'm 13, and started getting into rock music and Led Zeppelin when I was 11. I liked their music and had no clue what they looked like. Didn't find out until a couple months ago when I saw Robert on David Letterman, and then came to this website and saw the other's pics.. Yeah Robert Plant is hot, but that's not why I got into Zeppelin, it was because of the music.

We've got the same line of thought today.
MY STORY
I'm 19. Zeppelin is my favorite band. Far ahead of any other musical outfit. Why? Because I adore the music. I've heard bits and pieces of it all my life through the radio stations my parents listened to, and at some point, I'm not exactly sure when, everything clicked. The music began to speak to me. Any Zeppelin song would come on the radio and I was transfixed. I turned up the music and just listened. Zeppelin commanded my full attention. I noticed the pattern, and I noticed that it didn't happen too often. I downloaded the songs I knew and loved, and the CD I made from those downloads was just about the only CD I listened to for a long time.
I became vocal about my "new" discovery. It was new to me, I loved it, and I loved the feeling I got from it. I wanted to share that love. Eventually, my parents caught on, and I received the Early Days/Latter Days set for Christmas. I thought I had been hooked before. That was nothing...
Sure, I looked through the pictures in the booklets. I wasn't impressed. I laughed at the guy in the pink velvet pants and purple T-shirt and was jealous of the guy with the curly hair. Why couldn't mine look like that?! I looked through the booklets looking for information about the music. Lyrics, credits, release dates, albums, that sort of thing.
When I was at the height of my downloading frenzy, my dad asked me if I knew of a Zeppelin song that talked about a highway. I didn't, so I started searching around and stumbled upon this site. We poured over the lyrics on here without finding what he wanted me to download for him (turns out it was Big Log Close, but no cigar ). I kept coming back to the site because a lot of the things I wanted to know were right here. Eventually, I found the pictures. For some reason, I looked elsewhere also. I don't know why, but that lack of interest from seeing the live pics in the ED/LD booklets went away. I saw the guys making the music that I loved. There still wasn't any apparent attraction.
After hearing live tracks on AOLRadio, I had to have the DVD. That was the turning point, I think. Add the music to the corresponding images to my hormones and I'm hooked for life. Seeing they guys in motion making the music I loved so much while hearing the music caused an attraction to develop. For as long as I can remember, I've been drawn to the sounds of the guitar, so I suppose that made me focus on Jimmy. And there was something there. That's it.
But the music is the pinnacle of it all.
Sorry for the long post, but that's the gist of things, and I know that many can relate.
I don't know why I explained all this, or, more importantly, why I should have to.
Personally, from reading many of the messages on these boards I think that many of the younger females admire Page and Plant for the same reasons other girls their age admire the 'music' of Justin Timberlake.
So can they truly be called serious fans?

Es kommt nicht auf Äußerlichkeiten an.
Wobei es mehr Spaß macht, live Sachen zu schauen, wenn die Musiker auch noch gut aussehen. :mrgreen:
Aber im Grunde is es völlig egal. Ich wusste auch nicht, wie die Zepps aussehen, als ich die Musik kennengelernt hab... Wenn Musiker gut aussehen ist das ein Bonus, mehr auch nicht.
Und sehen die von Deep Purple besonders toll aus? Eigentlich net. Is die Musik geil? Ja! Also, who cares about the looks. :wink:
Vielleicht liegt es auch an der Musik, dass viele Mädels Jimmy oder Robert hübsch finden. Vielleicht hilft die Musik da ein bisschen nach. Könnte ja sein... Rockstar sind doch eigentlich eh nie der Typ, wo man normalerweise meint, dass Frau drauf steht.
Ich finde Jimmy auch hübsch und so, find ich ja auch toll, aber das ist nicht der entscheidende Grund, warum ich ihn mag. Ich mag ihn wegen seinem Gitarrenspiel. Da könnte er noch so hässlich aussehen, ich würde ihn bewundern.

Und wenn ich alles richtig verstanden habe, dann sieht es auch die Mehrheit der weiblichen Fans so. Das ist gut (habe ich auch nicht anders erwartet) :-)
