Metal Sonic - 05.06.2006, 02:28Weapons of Feudal Japan
I was watching a show the other day (Top 10 Weapons of All Time), and the Katana was number 10! I didn't really realise it was such a great weapon (the only sword on the list), it said most Samurai swordfights lasted seconds, the first person who made a mistake was dead.
I thought this was pretty interesting, but the next weapon was what really caught my attention. At number 5 or 6 I think, it was the Harquebus! Feudal Japan's guns were more powerful than most of today's modern ones, actually. They we're loaded with gunpowder and literally exploded when shot (it showed a guy who made replica ones, he demonstrated how easily it could punch throguh a few inches of concrete!) It was quite an interesting show, and I was surprised to see those weapons on it.
Now, the real question, what was your favorite weapon of Feudal Japan? I think the Naginata is neat, it's quite an interesting weapon for me.
(Oh, and for those interested, some other weapons on the show were the Longbow, Pike, AK-47, Tommy SMG, a Sniper rifle of some sort, the human body)

No its the rifle the Warlord hast too -> Teppo.
I like katana and naginata the most.

Aray - 05.06.2006, 14:35
I've always loooved tha katana ;) never liked anything that can kill your enemy from afar really, it's just cowardly. I like weapons that encourage an even, 1on1 close-encounter combat. So I guess I like tha human body as well then :D

tegeus-Cromis - 05.06.2006, 17:05
The naginata is neat; in fact there is a Black_Stan model (not in the game right now) using a yari that I think could be replaced by a naginata instead, as the hero does not use any thrusts at all. . . .
As a non-practitioner of any sort of combat arts, I wouldn't feel comfortable listing a 'favourite', but the most aesthetically appealing is probably the no dachi.

i like the Harquebus, there hould be a hero which use this a a primary weapon, orrtof a, very sloq attacker which lands strong damage! how do you make hero ideas? :?: :?: :?:
Re: Weapons of Feudal Japan
tegeus-Cromis - 13.06.2006, 19:53
Something like this?
Uh, to make a hero idea, you would just post the stats and skills for the hero as a topic called 'Hero: Gandalf the Grey,' or whatever, on the ideas forum. Formatted sensibly, one hopes; just have a look at the existing suggestions.

Well I always found the Kunai an interesting weapon. Pole blades I think are a chinese weapon but it's my definite favourite (yes yes naginata may be considered as a kind of pole blade). Not sure about where halberds originate but those I like too.
On another note...were cannons used yet at that time in Feudal Japan? I mean, just basic cannons. I ask because I've had a hero idea cooking up in my head. And nooK's comments on if he wants them to be used in this game or not, if they were even used at that time.

Personally I hate all guns, they take the least skill of all weapons. Blow-guns and bows are ok though, being an archer myself. And thrown weapons are fine, i'm deadly with kunai. Personally though i really like the kusari-gama(kamas with a chain attached with a weight at the end) The Bo is awesome too, give me one and I'm untouchable =P.

I teach myself, lol. I guess I know the basics. But, mostly it's stuff I read from books complied with moves of my own design I find extreemly effective.

tegeus-Cromis - 17.08.2006, 16:37
I'd really like to know how you 'self-taught' yourself to be 'deadly with kunai.' -_- Do you ambush hobos in backalleys or what?

You might be good at slashing around, but have you trained your reflexes and blocks? It's no use to be attacking if your enemy just dances around you without you getting a single hit through his defenses, whereas he may strike through yours with ease.

That can be aranged ive had 2 and a half years trainig in chinese gung fu (gung pronounced kung )
lets say it suprises many who have no idea. also handy with quarter staff and spear.
but still a fight is always better avoided u never know what the person u are fighting has. like if he has aids and he bites u ur fucked cos u couldnt walk away. but still there as protection.
You have never been more scared than when u have been scared with a used heroin needle u have to go through tests and the waiting is more painful that the actual fight ive been in one of those fights its not pretty the guy who got needle was all clear though.
its not often u see a grown man cry. if u want muggin go england precisely go grimsby theyl use needles carving knifes whatever they can find. and theres never less than 4 of em.

4 or more guys hmm...lol only 2 things i could use to take on that many guys, bo or kusari-gama...and not so good a chance lol, most of the time it's only two(the stoners round here never send more than 2people at a time(they like having "back-up") only time i took on more than two was with my friends...And wow, some1 actually posted on this thing again...And I know it's best not to fight yada yada ya, but hey everyone knows that its fun once and a while ha....*sigh* now someones gonna pull the smallest dogs have the biggest bark thing... *sigh* but the real thing is I don't like backing down, I'm very stubborn and hard-headed sometimes...sure when i don't feel like fighting or am just to lazy(we all have these days) I'll walk away even let people get a few punches in if they chase me...(damn stoners and they're lack of respect..)
Also, why use a used heroin needle...hell why drugs man... herbal remedies and potions man (i study potions of verious religions and desennts too cuz i have too much free time *sigh* i know ancient summerian potions someone help me!!!)

You guys don't seem very realistic. Even if you do martial arts, you're no more special than any of us others. So you can slash around and block a few hits? That's nice. But when you really get into a fight where the purpose is to kick your ass, it's not that simple. When its the real deal they won't hit you according to the textbook. They will rush at you, throw you on the ground and start whacking at you. They won't try a roundhouse kick on you (like Chuck Norris would  ). You may have practised to block such a thing, but there's one crucial difference: You knew it was coming and you were prepared for it.
And Viziroth...Do you honestly think you would be able to fight a group of 4 people with your whatchamacallit weapons? :? They would laugh at you for waving around your weapon. And more importantly, you don't walk around town with a weapon hanging on your waist :? Sure you can say you could beat them but you would not have the guts to really hit anyone with a weapon, especially a sharp one. You would be the one in bigger trouble after that.
Get real people.

So let's go even more off-topic now:
What would be your weapon-of-choice in case someone would attack you and you'd be armed? (attacker may have weapons but no firearms)

 Full-control, unlimited telekinesis.
But seriously? If I had to defend myself with a weapon, and it had to be a lethal-type one... a rapier. 'Cause I know how to use it.
Non-lethal? Probably a blunted rapier. Or a big stick.

*sigh* I actually have carried around a bo staff before, strapped to my back... And i have no idea where i could get a kusari-gama anyway....Who doesn't want to walk around with a big stick from time to time. But yeah wepon of choice a staff, or like full metal forearm guards/metal fists...(not crital mass omg how do ppl use those O.O) And Who goes by the book, you always mod things when yourself taught or taught by friends I'm not saying I truly know a form of martial arts just basics and I've studdied human fight behavior so i could block/counter(as I said many times I have a lot of free time)...lol. funny story, cops came to our school once and for a demonstation put me in a cuffed hammer lock and i reversed it just to embarass the cop(he wasn't using his full force of course) lol....
But yeah, I sometimes do carry around the freakin 5 to 6ft bo staff...Or you know just my hockey stick when my uncle takes away the staves...
And Lyncor, you know what I ment o.O
If you read closely you'd see that i didn't have a good chance of taking on four guys o.O And since I know some of the cops round here I prob could plea self defence beliveibly...Plus, the bo isn't sharp, it's a staff...Also if they laugh it'll make it all the easier o.O so yeah forrbiden...
But fave wepons, Bo staff (or duel shorter staffs, i forget what thy're called..), metal arms/fists, somekinda katana(never see me actually using one in a real fight though...) or kusari-gama(which i've never had the pleasure of even seeing a real one so i dunn ohow i oculd truly weild)

(hence been in more fights.)
try it go lern something then have a fight ull see the difference. its something u carnt just say
but wepon of choice if anything........Twin custom made desert eagles 8) ...or if not that.....a rusty spoon theres nothing more grusom than surgery with a rusty spoon

This was going off-topic anyway, so its not limited to only weapons of feudal japan. EDIT: And sporks look pretty badass. Someone should try dual wielding them in combat.
If unarmed enemy, my choise would propably be knife or dulo. If armed, propably rattan sticks. Has to be something that won't cause bad injury due to being unable to control. Pepper spray isn't bad either in both cases. All cutting edge weapons are kinda banned in case of real attack as doing anything more than neutralizing the attack may cause lawsuit in Finland. (and I doubt you wan't to cut throats accidentally or intentionally. Any kind of bleeding isn't pretty, fatal or not)

I don't know much about Japenese History. But I have always love the Sword and Shield combo. I think a Shield that can double as a weapon would be great.
