    Drummerworld

    Interessant...
Die haben auch ein Forum. Da lohnt sich mal rumzuschnüffeln ;-)
Für mich z.B. interessant, was "Fachleute" über Bonzo sagen:

    Drumming in the Zep style

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I had not really sat down seriously and tried to master Zep tunes. I did work on the grooves. I have sat down recently and started working out parts. It gets me away from the realm of just commenting on drum gear or off topic stuff.

    A few observations:

    - Compared to RUSH, Metal and a whole host of rock, you have to have a looser groove for Bonham

    - A 22" Kick just doesn't sound satisfactory to me. I intend to remedy that this summer with a green sparkle Bonham replica kit. It will be pretty accurate, except for a few minor hardware differences. IMO, my Pearl ultracast aluminum can do anything a Ludwig LM-402 will. And to keep things authentic, I will use the same speed king pedal Bonzo did.

    - You have to be able to play more for feel than technical time accuracy

    - IMO, you better have a strong foot and do heel-toe. Bonzo did NOT have a feeble tap on that kick drum. Each note was definate.

    - It helps to have a couple timbales, bongoes or high pitched toms and maybe a roland spd-20 to make those extra sounds. And don't forget the ching-ring.

-develop rock-solid doubles and triplets before playing zep. Not to mention travelling doubles and triplet fills.

-I started with "fool in the rain." It was a little awkward at first, because I felt in practice more rigid than the material called for. Here is an area where some cover bands flop. You have to swing a little or it just doesn't work. I have heard bands cover Zep, and they try to play it like hard rock... and they ruin it because it's not bluesy enough.

-On "The ocean" I had to pay attention to changes and fills.

    - On "Black dog" I listened for that click just before the drumming as my cue. I am not adept at reading music or strict counting discipline yet. I have more self-taught chops and the ability to play complex stuff, but not a disciplined musical memory.

    - "When the leavee breaks", just needs that cavernous 26" kick.... playing it on a 22"x 18" IMO, is like trying to have a pounding stereo with 20hz bass in your house with a 8" woofer. It's a nice TRY anyway. There is no replacement for displacement.

Re: Drumming in the Zep style

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I've really tried to nail some of John's parts. I remember looping four bar sections of tunes on my laptop like "When The Levee Breaks" and "Good Times Bad Times" and "Fool in the Rain". Some people call him sloppy. I wouldn't call it sloppy because it's consistently sloppy, in the same sense a Brazilian musician has a consistently different subdivision, but it's different than that. John really phrased behind the beat to great effect. Even in his drum solos, you could hear the time pull back and come in right on the beat. It all evened out, because he always came out of it with good time.
Like I said, it's technically accurate, I think, just in a different way. It's not European marching linear time, but it's definetly not a sloppy band... It's tight in it's own way, kind of like the Meters or Elvin Jones. Speaking of which, I heard John Bohnam idolized Elvin Jones and tried to play rock like he would. Makes sense.

There is a laid back feel, and often offbeat way he lays it down. Players need to think well outside the box of 2/4 and 4/4.

Re: Drumming in the Zep style

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

i think that bonzos strength, other than have some of the most impressive rock chops of his day, was his taste. of all the things he could have played in each part of every zep song he seems to unerringly go for the coolest sounding thing. he sounds like he's having fun.

i've been an avid and studying fan for more than a decade. right now a song i'm really enjoying is 'darlene'.the groove with that hihat opening is just lovely. but also the way the whole rhythm canges as cleanly as the sun coming out from the clouds in the part of the sing where plant sings: 'i don't care what people say and i don't care what they do...'

these days i'm developing my own chops and many of them are part bonzo never played but i willnever stop being his student...and his most important lessons to me and all of us... a) creativity b) bombastic joyous and sexy feel.

    long live the legend.

When I hear people say "Oh, I love Bonham cuz he hit those drums so hard!", I just roll my eyes. Bonham's power was all in his wrists, thanks to good technique. I'm sure that whenever he was drunk or feeling really good, he could probably hit really hard (he was a construction worker before Zep, after all).

Watching the "How the West Was Won" DVD really opened up my eyes as to Bonham's true style and nuances. He was all about getting big sound out of minimal movement, and people confuse that with just hitting really hard.
