Tips & tricks for good SP or MP map
I haven't created too many maps like some others but at least created maps that are downloaded in thousands. So, after 3 year of experience in mapping, here are my basic tips(later ill post some screenshots):

    SIZE:
Most mappers make mistakes when choosing size. Whenever you make map you ought to first imagine map in the head, then to start work. Mostly, small maps are 9X9 or less, medium to 16X16 and bigger are big.
When making map for SP you could make very big maps. But for MP, map size and therefore unit and objects placement is critical.
    TERRAIN:
First imagine, then make it. With terrain that's not monotonous you have map that user will enjoy. You must also know that any height you place may lower range of artillery or any other unit. Also, heights placed on the map ends, if they are big, could make you a problem as objects will stay lower and you will have naked hill. Solution is to place objects first and then raise hill.
River is a point of mistake of most mappers. Why? Because they place it with cut-end and without any objects on it. River should be placed with objects like "Coast" in Objects-Terrain-Common tab. That will make river with riverbank. Also, for nice river, placing of small islands with Grass and Small trees, small swamps near it and piers will make river even more realistic.
Roads are also point of mistake. When making size of roads keep in mind how big it should be. For normal two directions traffic place two trucks one by another. Than you have normal road. Also, when you link two different types of roads you must make them connected smoothly so it looks like these roads are actually linked(end to an end). Ill post screen how to do that. Also, roads could have another functions:
-placed on fields they could simulate freshly done garden(road Path)
-placed around trenches could make it look like ground dug out of trenches(also road Path)
    coming update soon...

I think a map needs a minimal historical accuarity. I saw maps where soviets and germans fought in a map called Italy. It s hard for a map author to balance the teams. Even if the map looks so pretty, people wont play it if its unbalanced. I suggest to everyone, dont edit USA/Britain vs Germany maps, becouse of the really hard balance. USSR vs Germany can be balanced. But for example the american M36 hasnt got such a good opponent like M36. Some people take Panther vs M36, but its unbalanced: The panther will be killed by 1 shoot usually. As i saw, only few guys like allies vs german maps, so if u can, edit ussr vs german.
    Regards

Mostly i make Eastern front SP maps because of bigger variety of units. Also, if you have Germany VS USA and use P47 Thunderbolt for USA, what aircraft will you use for Germany?
