    MICK in mail
    hi

For those who cannot get this here is the article apologise for any
    typing mistakes.

    Wine Women and song

Mick Hucknall is different today. When we last met, several years
ago, I found him to be a feisty ball of a man: prickly, defensive,
suspsious. He was drinking to much, struggling with his weight,
    struggling with his lonliness.
Today he is hugely changed. So much so that it's only the red hair
that makes me certain it's him when we meet ata north london studio,
and even that doesn't seem so well red. This altered, red-lite 45
year old Hucknall is lighter of foot and lighter of frame; chipper
    rather than chippy-chilled even.
Hucknall isn't at ease talking about his private life. He says the
colourful stories written about him are 'a convenient smoke screen.
It get's me off the hook. I don't have to show them my real life,
    which I quite like.'
He fears revelation will diminish, even ruin, what he values. Sio it
takes us a while to get the reason for his volteface, but eventually
we do. Hucknall, it emerges, is deeply in love. Yes, Mick the serial
womaniser, Mick the one-night-stander, has fallen, and fallen hard.
He's been with the same woman for three years now. She is, he say's
his soulmate, and they are trying for a baby.
'There's a joy in sharing things that that you don't get by being on
your own,' he says 'You learn so much more. Where do I start? There
are millions of things: how much fun it is to share experiences with
sombody who's your lover but is also your best friend -somebody who
enjoys aesthtic things, countless things - arts, culture...'
Hucknall first dated his girlfriend more than ten years ago, but
says he was frightend of commitment, terrified of intense emotion.
He started finding fault with her and pushed her away.
'We broke up for a few years' he says. 'Both of us went on with our
lives but it never really ended. I had a couple of relationships
that lasted a few months but I was always comparing them to her and
they never matched up. We couldn't close the relationship. We had to
be together, we didn't have a choice.'
So is marriage in the air? 'I'm not quite sure. I think both of us
would rather have a family than worry about a piece of paper because
neither of us are religious. I still look upon marriage as a
religious structure in terms of the church. But we might after
children.' Is he going to have a child? 'Yes' When? 'When it
happens. It's a random thisng isn't it? It will happen when it
    happens.'
Hucknall is smilinh when he says, this, a relaxed, easy smile. This
is the first time he has spoken about his girlfriend. When we last
met he was yearning for someone to love like this. He told me: 'I
    miss having a relationship.
There is a difference between a relationship and good, honest sex'
And Hucknall seems to have had more than his fair share of sex.
Actresses Catherine Zeta-ones, Tracy Shaw and Martine Mchutcheon,
models Helena Christensen, Cathy Lloyd, Adriana Sklenarikova and
Kristina Kumlin, dancer Marilyn Couvallon, DJ Lisa I'Anson and
socialite Deidra Murrey (Miss Dee)- he's said to have dated them
all. Were the reports exagerated? 'No, I'm guilty,' he says 'It;s
lifes experience. I think it's searchiung for approval. Love me,
admire me-something like that. In most cases, though it usually had
to do with being drunk. You go into any City Centre on a Friday or
Saturday night and you see it going on all over the world. There's
nothing particularly unusual about it but because of being famous it
get's reported, it get's blown up. Ultimately, it doesn't make you
    happy.'
He si happy now, though, garrulously happy. I ask her name.'I'd
rather not say. he says. In fact he says, she'd kick a*se' if he
named her. 'She's a director of my wine company and she speaks six
different languages. There's actually no nepotism. I chose her
because she's going to be great. She's very good at her job. I don't
think she'd want me to say who she is.'
"She's the kind of girl who would get very upset. She's not
interested in any of this publicity and stuff, which is exactly why
i like her. I don't want to attract attention t o us, but, yes, i'd
say i'm in a very good place."
Hucknall divides his time between 3 places at present. He has homes
in Surrey, Paris, Sicily and says he choose where to stay depending
on " where the moment takes us."
He ownes a 18th century estate at Saint Alfio on the volvanic slopes
of Mount Etna, where he produces wine with local oenologist
Salvitore Foti. Hucknall is passionate about his label Il Cantante
(The singer), which is not yet for sale.
"Fame and celeberity takes you to certain resturants. I started to
appreciate good foood and wine and then had this opportunity to get
involved with wine in Italy," He says. Il Cantante is a very small
consern. The tradition of wine on Mount Etna goes back to ancient
times. Cyclops was spouse to have got drunk on Etna red.
"Whats interesting about Etna is that no major companies have really
been able to invest there. It is not worth it because they want to
produce large volumes of wine. Developing wine on a volcano can be
difficult. We've been buying plots in vaarious parts. Il Cantante
is a mixture of 2 or 3 different grape viarities which are native to
    the Etna region."
The last time we meet Hucknalll was roaring about in a Ferrari
enjoying the spoils of world wide sales of more than 45,000,000
Simply Red albums; constently on the move, searching, looking, never
quite finding. Now, he says, " The good things in life are not
necessary the most expensive. One of the joys of Italy is the
    simplicity."
"With every year that goes by, there will be a moment in the day
that echos the past - a litttle magic moment. It can be a fleeting
second, when you get a bizarre sense of deja vu with the season.
You think,"This is spring. I rember like feeling like this when i
    was a child."
" I love evey year for that and now i have somebody who enjoys that
kind of thing, too. We are getting to the time when we haverrest
the grapes. Its another thing I look forward to, and I can finally
understand - mayabe this an age thing - how people love the
beautyful rythm they have in their garden, that wonderful sense of
    the rythm of life."
I find this altered Hucknall intriguing and tell him so. Everything
about him speaks of a man who is at peace with himself. He use to
never keep still, talking with his hands, his body, his face.
Today, his lounging easily on a red sofa.
He was, he conceeds, on the eage serval years ago. Deeply marked by
a mother Maureen, who left home when he was just 3 years old, whe
was hugly insecure - about his looks, career and his trust in
    others.
"The expereiences you have as a child effect how you are when your
older," He had told me. " I think my mother leaving partly accounts
for how I am. I have a fear of getting involved with anybody in an
    intense.
"Anytime I have had a reationship, I have run scared. I have
foundamental fear that someone is going to leave me again, so in
order to stop them doing that, I leave first. Today, he says, "Woe
upon any human being if they are the samer person thwey were 10
years ago. Yours suppose to grow, your suppose to change. I wouldn't
like to be the sanme person I was 10 years ago.
"All through my life I have tried to follow my nature rather than do
things I was told I was suppose to - sometime to my detriment.
"I don't do clubs anymore. I don't go out geting hammered every
other night. It wasn't like I was an alcholic or drinking abottle
of vodka a day. But in someways i fitted into the typical, British
male, binge/ drinking thing - saying to myself, "I'm going out 2
nights a week and I'm going to get pissed." I just drink steadily
through the evening from when i went out at 9pm until 4am.
"but you come to a certain point where you have a chocice. You can
take the self-destruct thing even further or you can pull back a bit
and go, " wait a minute. I'm not that unhappy. Lifes actually
pretty good so why are you heading into a zone where you could self-
    destructed?"
"At the same time I was learning alot about wine. I really
developed a love for wine in 1988, but in the past 6 years I got
into understanding alot about it. For me to have a converstion with
Salvatore, the guy I Make wine with, I needed to make sure i knew a
little bit of what I was talking about - but I didn't spit it out
    when I was tasting.
"Unfortunately, I started piling on the pounds, I've noticed i get
    heavier, too. Its the drink, I'm a boozer. I love a drink I can't
deny it. I'm half - Irish, it's in my jeans. But if i had carried
on going down that route of getting heavier and heavier and drinking
more and more alchol, I knew what would happen. I decided nip it
in bud. I now tend to enjoy things in a more relaxed way. I think
    that suits my age."
He doesn't use the word self-acceptence, but this is where Hucknal
is at he asked me to "Try and lay of the mother thing," but it is
the mother thing that put him where he is. Born in a working-class
suburb of Manchester he was raised by father Reg, a barber, who
wanted him to stop messing around with music and become a marine
    biologist instead.
He was mothered by a neighbour and her four daughters but missed his
real mothers love. He's seen her only once since the day she left. A
shy child by nature he learnt to cover up emotion and he hide his
fears early on. He says that between the ages of 11 and 16 he
was "like a headless chicken", often clashing with his father and
    dabbling in drugs.
"I think I was partically shy because of the story of my family, "
He says. "I think a women instils a child with self-confidence more
than a father, so you have that challange.
Hucknall attened arts college before settling on music and the
stage, achieving phenomenal sucess with Simple Red. Today, he is
extremely wealthy and counts politions "Tony Blair, Gordon brown"
and Hollywood celberities (Sean Penn, Jack Nicholson) as friends.
He never managed to shake off his insecurities, though. It made him
prickly and defencive. A rogh ride in the British press didn't help.
" There have been some horrible things written about me in the
press," He says. "I belive we are a nation of bullies. I can take
all the jibes about males with red hair, but I wonder about a 7 year
old kind in the school yard." Except, in reality he couldn't take it.
"I dont take criticism well. If it's just a personal attack on your
appearence, it wears you down to the point where you feel in a
corner, you've got your fist permantly clenches. My reaction would
be to lash out, whereas, as years have gone by, I just do this now."
He brushes his shoulder as if removing a stray hair. " I don't feel
    it," he says.
"I think this search for approval was partly the mum thing and also
part of the experience of maintaining a career. Whichever way yoou
look at it, there are only 20 chart positions. Every month there is
a new bunch of mkids coming in who want to get into those 20
    positions.
"I toyed with the idea of just disappearing and letting them get on
with it. But I'm stricken with this foundermental love of music
    which I can't shake. I can't stop writing, I can't making music."
Hucknall was recently in Cuba where he recorded a live album - free
with next weeks Mail on Sunday - and found a new source of
inspiration. "Cuba is such an interesting and incredible place, and
it fitted in with our influences from Brazil and Jamaica," He
says. " i think we - band and crew - were all effected by the
    Country and by the people.
"I have turned a corner of doubt about my music and I know this is
what I want to do. But when I got to the end of my last contract
with Time Warner, in about 1998, in my mind I was heading towards a
state of semi-retirement. Working for an orgainsiation wheres you
down so i set up my own company (simplyred.com), to make records the
way i wanted to. It's a great feeling doing things for yourself. Now
I just have to get on and ejoy it."
The interview is coming to an end and Hucknalls driver is
waiting. "Look I'm me," he says. "The mother thing was 42 years ago
and there are people around you who shape you more than someone whos
not there. I realise that happiness is more about sharing and I
enjoy it very much." Clearly so.

The free cd with the Sunday Mail next week is disc one and disc 2
the following week comprises of 20 tracks including
    Holding back the years
    fairground
if you don't know me by now

money's to tight to mention and many more

Thanks for posting, Chris--when was this interview conducted? Do you know?

Just wondering what the status on 'Amplified' is as it's supposedly dropping in June--it's already mid-April and we haven't heard a definite release date, that seems unusual...

Sounds like quite the happy bloke. Though I am a bit concerned about the lack of discussion of his MUSIC...his interests seem to be veering elsewhere...it did seem like the interviewer set the tone that way but Mick used to be much more vehement about discussing his most recent project(s). Would be interesting to get some honest dialogue about how much musical passion he's feeling these days. Interests do sometimes change over time...

Thanks Chris for pulling this together for us. I found the article a good read and about time the newspapers in the UK done a decent article on/with Mick.

However, Shannon does make a very interesting point. He is usually adamant to talk about his music. But no show on music (aka Amplified) in this article.

Makes you wonder.......... Should we be concerned????????????

    Hi Chris!
Thanks a lot for sharing this interview! It must have taken you hours to type it! :clap

Hmmm, should we be concerned?!? I think not! Reading this interview we should have been concerned if he went on (clubbing, drinking, etc. ...) like he did before falling deeply in love  I am happy to read that he is happy with his life now! He deserves it!
Oh, and don't forget: He's a music lover, he enjoys being on stage plus he is in a situation where he can musically do whatever he likes to do now.
So why should he stop making music? Forget it, I don't like that thought at all!

I wish I could have sneak preview in the future, I would tell you all about it, but I can not. We have to wait and see what the future will bring.

Didn't they sell some wine via auction around September ?

Gigs? Oh yeah, you know it--4 in the UK. Because I'm insane and I choose to ignore how in debt I am. :devil Pics and reviews will come after, of course! But I'm not sure how far after as I'll be spending my whole summer traveling, thus technically "homeless". Won't have a reliable physical address from the end of June to the beginning of September.

Stories, details, hype, history, we remember + cherish it all.

Followers are deeper than "Fans", collecting music, photos, memories of concerts.

We all keep in touch as a family, savoring the music, winking, smiling, waving, sending kisses, sharing tunes, video experiences, backstage door stories, miles of travel to concerts, happiness...

"Such fantastic talent, many fans have supported over 20 years !

It's all about the MUSIC, It's all about SIMPLY RED."
