    The Practise Room
All instrumentalists on the boards, show yourselves! Let's encourage each other in our practise habits...check in here and let everybody know if you've done time on your instrument lately. Maybe talk about stuff you're working on...note achievements or concerns...get contacts for tips.

Michi--how long do you figure you'll practise per night? I have two hours SCHEDULED with Chip...but because of seasonal mood and sleep changes, haven't been giving that...will strive to get on it this week though.

Tijn--I know what's distracting you. Take care of ONE of those distractions ASAP... The other one...she can distract you all she likes. :D

Anyone else on here currently playing? I know you said you wanted to start again, Angie...

    Re: The Practise Room

    simplymichi - 23.01.2006, 21:01

Two hours??!! WOW!!! Think I will begin with half an hour each day (don't want to scrunch my lower lip *outch*) and increase to hmmm... maybe an hour per day?!? What a resolution.

...wish I could play Ian's part on Stars (Cuba!-version)... isn't he cool?? *sigh* ...oh, and one of my all-time-favourites "Thrill Me" ... and of course "Sad Old Red" ... oh ... there are so many cool sax solos 8)
I remember standing in front of Ian when he played one of his amazing solos... he's a wizard!

    Re: The Practise Room

    sasred - 23.01.2006, 21:13

Mmmmm...delicious solos. Which sax do you play? Alto, tenor, or bari? I'm thinking of the solo in "Infidelity" as well...nice stuff. Yes, Ian is a saxman supreme. He's a load of fun to watch.

I hear you on not making the lips hurt...wind instruments are harder to go for long periods on, I could never tolerate more than an hour on my trombone either. During our high school marching band's "Hell Weeks", when we'd be playing ALL DAY, my lips would be swollen and numb...red as a beet...

Takes longer for the fingertips to go numb, and if I'm ever going to peel off lines like those in 'More', I've got to get up to speed. Hence the two hours per night. I can't even do simple fretting exercises without sounding like a twat yet!!!! :D

I really SHOULD go and get lessons, at least once every other week, so someone can keep my technique in line...after all, only PERFECT practise makes perfect.

    Re: The Practise Room

    simplymichi - 23.01.2006, 21:28

I play the Alto. Yeah, it's big enough for me lil girl :D
Here's a picture of that instrument (not mine but the same):

Was a bit surprised to see that it is more expensive now then when I bought it 2 years ago

Yes, the lips hurt pretty soon especially when you are as lazy as I was lately. The more you play the more your lips get used to it but you will never get a kind of callus.

    Re: The Practise Room

    sasred - 23.01.2006, 21:35

Ah, alto, beautiful sounds can be had from an alto.

No calluses here yet...might take a while to build them up as I did put more forgiving strings on it...nickel roundwounds. Good tone (when I fret and pluck right!), and not as hard on the fingers as steel strings. I do have this annoying numbness in my left index fingertip though.

No, the headaches are what everyone ELSE gets when I practise. Sour notes through a 160 watt amp... :devil

(And when I say sour, it's not in the usual sense--I'm good at getting on or near the fret so the note's in tune...but the tone is usually off, bad fret buzz from digging in too much or something. :D )

    Re: The Practise Room

    sasred - 25.01.2006, 07:56

So...Michi, Tijn--done some playing since we checked in last?

Did mine tonight...I think I've discovered why it's so hard for me to get the fretboard stuff down, as far as retraining my ear. My ear is recognizing the notes as what they are (where they are on the staff), but I'm not linking notes to frets in the mind just yet because I'm remembering slide positions on the trombone and to some extent the embochure as well. So the old memories are interfering with learning the new. Getting a little better though. Moving 'round the fretboard slightly faster as well (thanks for the exercises and adaptations again, Tijn, they're being a big help!!).

Now, if I could just get in some UNINTERRUPTED practice time... :D (Duty night, so students were hovering 'round my room like bees to a hive--they were begging me to crank it up, if you can believe that!! :devil)

    Crank it up Shannon :D

I will try to start dabbling a bit on the ivories this coming week :) It should help improve my mood in the long dreary wnter we have been having :)

Yes!!!! You do that, Angie!! Let us know how it goes.

 My guys are so easily amused (I'm one of the RA's on the guys' floor). I'm just noodling away, right? And they know it...they start bellering, "WE CAN'T HEAR YOU!!!!" Normally I keep the gain most of the way down on the amp as I don't need the extra projection power in this tiny room (or the annoying speaker hiss)...but I was feeling pretty cheeky last night, so I decided to give 'em a treat. Gain up...volume up...

    BOOOOOM. BUBBADABUBBADABUBBADA. BOOOOOOM.

    "WHOOOAA!!! COOL!!! DO IT AGAIN!!!!"

Heh heh heh. :devil  :D

It's a good thing they're very lenient about noise here... :rock :top

Michi--I totally hear that. I feel like a drunk turtle wading through these finger exercises...but my fingers aren't ready to move faster yet!!

Tijn--good to hear. I figured once you got that distraction out of the way, you'd get some time in with your OTHER lady. Hey--you're not responding on Messenger again...what's up with this thing?? *swats computer*

Hey, Michi, Angie, Tijn...gotten any time in lately?

I haven't...discipline problems with the students last week put me well behind in schoolwork...and now I'm scrambling to get an 8-page research paper done for Thursday night...

*sigh* Academia has me by the scruff of the neck again...if I wasn't such a damn perfectionist in that area...do I really need that Summa cum Laude again?!?!?!?

Right. Back to the research...the sooner this paper gets done, the sooner I can go noodle... :?

    Re: The Practise Room

    night nurse - 08.02.2006, 00:36

Well at least you have good excuse Shannon. I just plain have not made it a priority. Too busy with other things

    Re: The Practise Room

    sasred - 09.02.2006, 06:59

Well, we need to encourage each other... :-D

Me, no good excuses tonight...the research is done, I just have to TYPE THAT @%#*!+ paper...oh, how I hate doing papers...I love reading the research, but then to blather on for pages about it, in "proper APA format"...*gags* They can take their APA format and shove it up their...

Seriously...half the time spent on one of these papers is arranging the fusspot format...lots of unnecessary bells and whistles if you ask me. Focus on the CONTENT, people. :motz :motz :motz

If I could make that avatar bang its head double time, you'd have an idea of what I'm feeling right now...add in some hair pulling...

*looks to the corner at Chip and whimpers*

Must. get. cracking. Class in 17 1/2 hours. Haven't even done the title page. :(

Wait...wasn't this topic about instrument practise?

And it would be nice if I'd pick the American or British spelling, eh what?

    I'm stalling. Right. GONE!!!

    Re: The Practise Room

    sasred - 09.02.2006, 07:54

I just had a brilliant idea. Since I need to throw in some ear training anyway, when I get this beast done and get some time in on Chip, I'll have a bang at working out the bass line to Queen's "Another One Bites The Dust" by ear. I know, it's a simple one, but it's about where I'm at ability-wise. Maybe even a bit beyond me right now. :D  But I'll have fun anyway, and the guys will get a kick out of it 'cause they'll actually recognize what I'm playing. (I hope.)

Besides, it's a rather appropriate track, given the circumstances, eh?

Michi, Tijn...what are you two working on? You still fighting with that Jamiroquai track, Tijn?? 8)

Gave me lady some new string aswell today, they are amazing!!

And yet another afternoon/evening without making any "noise" :?

    Re: The Practise Room

    sasred - 10.02.2006, 05:50

Michi: Aw, come on, pick up your sax!! It's not noise, it's music in its infancy. (Or at least that's the excuse I'm offering. :D )

Tijn: Excellent!! What kind did you finally decide on, and what brand?

I might try some GHS Boomers next, or some DR Sunbeams...though these DR's fascinate me more:

Peacock Blues and Red Devils. They've also got Black Beauties. Color-coated roundwounds...they're steels, though, so I probably wouldn't get 'em in the end, I'm not overly keen on a steel string tone. Those Blues look awfully cool just the same... :D

*sigh* So many strings, so little money to buy or time to break 'em in.

Hey Michi, are sax players this nuts about their mouthpieces/reeds???

OOOOOOOoooooooh....niiiiiiiice!!!! How much did those cost??? *cringes* The "call or e-mail for price" scared me away from the Bright Nickels I was eyeballing...

I suppose the BETTER question to ask, though, is--are they WORTH IT? I'm willing to shell out $50 for a set if it means throwing them on the axe and getting good tone for 2 years...I would be so afraid of one of those breaking....*bites fingernails*

Get back to me in about 2 weeks, after you've played 'em for a while...let me know if the tone "deadens"--supposedly a problem for some folks with those strings...

You sound quite happy so far, though...and I'll bet it's encouraging you to get more time in... :D

2 years? These strings will last for some time, but i will replace them in 6/7 months in the maximum. The cost me a lot, but they worth it from wot i can see know. Have played on them for 6 hours or something and i love them. Will get back to u in 2 weeks ;)

    Re: The Practise Room

    sasred - 15.02.2006, 13:00

    *long, exasperated, gutteral sigh*

Finally picked it back up after a 2-week dry spell...now I know why I scheduled in daily practice. Yea, the dogs did howl, verily, and grown men did weep. Ears were plugged in the name of le suck. :(

I also discovered the truth to some wisdom posted on TalkBass: "Don't put your bass anywhere YOU wouldn't be comfortable." It's been really dry in here, and temps fluctuating wildly as the heater is gonzo, and I've been leaving the window open a crack to compensate, but the weather's been...Chicago-like. :? Result: me waking up with a sore throat every morning, and my bass--lovely fret shaving being negated with contracting fingerboard. Not to mention the %&*!^$ of a time I had getting it back in tune. Chip's mad at me.

Humidifier is now hard at work making the air in here breathable for both of us. Temp I'm going to keep a much closer eye on as well--need to put that Galileo thermometer I've got to some good use besides fascinating eye candy. 8)

And the playing itself? The crowbar has gone into the wallet. As soon as somebody displays enough insanity to take me on, I'm starting lessons.

    More practice in the meantime.

    Re: The Practise Room

    sasred - 18.02.2006, 07:45

Lesson went very well. This guy's GOOD. After just a bit of my noodling, he knew where my trouble spots were and gave me some good exercises to work on. And was extremely patient and encouraging all the way.

Complimented me on my right hand technique and what I remembered of music theory... :-D

...and actually told me to CUT BACK on how long I practice each time!! Wants to make sure I don't fatigue the muscles.

Funny, when I was playing 'bone, I was always getting hollered at for not practicing ENOUGH...now it seems I'm overenthusiastic!!

    How's everyone else coming along?

    Re: The Practise Room

    sasred - 27.02.2006, 12:49

Thanks, Angie...have you had any chance to tickle the ivories lately?

Practiced for the first time in a couple of days earlier...could tell my mood was most foul when I didn't even feel like picking Chip up lately...but managed it today. At 4 in the morning. Benefit of living in a dorm: concrete block wall, no one can hear what I'm doing. :D And it was actually nice not having to worry about constant interruption...

Took SWR up on their little tip in the owner's manual I downloaded off their site...my lower 2 strings had some distortion in 'em, and all my knob-fiddling on the amp was doing nothing. Switched from the passive to the active jack. Voila. Less belch and more boom. :top

So that makes more sense to everyone besides Tijn--a passive bass does not have a pre-amplifier built into the instrument, but an active one does. There's a separate jack on most amps for each type; the passive jack gives extra boost in sound signal to compensate for the lack of preamp. But mine apparently doesn't need it, even though mine's a passive bass. Overexcitable and loud, just like its owner. :D *giggles*

Great Job Shan~ you are doing well with your bass. I have yet to open the piano~ I did dust it yesterday while cleaning. It just ins't a priority right now. Maybe someday..... hey that sounds familiar doesn't it :)

    Keep up the good work!

No excuses, Angie...even just 15 minutes a day is better than nothing. You can find 15 minutes, right? Just some "you" time. :D

And thanks! Need to be better about keeping up the practice though.

Search. Your sax misses you. :-D You will never be a virtuoso like Ian if you don't get the time in.

And I'll never get to actually playing lines if I don't keep things up... Have tried some, but my articulation and speed are WAY off.

Did end up getting those Peacock Blues strings after all though, what the hell, I can see what they sound like, I'm still in the experimental phase, so...

as amateur players you have all the time in the worid to practice: be happy nothing presses you as you aint got to have any imminent public appearance showing your skill anywhere anytime soon have you. so just keep playing a little bit if it gives you even a momentary pleasure. a bit like me reading in french some rare times knowing i`ll never need to use it still getting a bit of fun being able to understand bits of it lol

    Re: The Practise Room

    sasred - 01.03.2006, 08:37

That's one argument that could be made, I suppose...but then we're choosing not to have that pressure, I know Angie just wants to play for pleasure, as does Michi (right?? Crock me if I'm wrong). I am doing this bass thing because it's FUN...I love the sounds the instrument makes, I love the feel of the bass in my hands. I have no intentions of gigging anytime soon. This is just because I want to for me.

With that, another alley-cat disturbing middle-of-the-night practice session. *turns amp on and grabs bass* :devil

(No worries--the sound doesn't carry through these walls, and I keep it nice and quiet. I save the cranking for when I actually stick to my scheduled time.)

Hi Shan~ you are right. Right now my husband, daughters and my job on the board of directors for two Marathon (running) organizations keep me busy. The piano is strictly for fun :) And someday it may be more but for now tickling the ivories is a tickle to me soul. Happy and fun when I have time to do it :)

    Alright, peeps, check in!

Me...gonna get my bum kicked by my teacher Thursday...have only picked Chip up twice since my last lesson a week and a half ago... Never gonna get that circle of fourths memorized if I don't get at it...

Taking my bass with me for Spring Break though, and I'll have plenty of time to practice.

Fingers are stretching out nicely...getting better range in frets 1-5 these days. :top My tiny paws may yet get the hang of this.

YAY!!!!!! :D :D :D What did you play?
Discovered an advantage to my bass playing coming back from lunch...thanks to my extended finger range, I can balance several plates on my left hand now...:top

See, it's not just about the music. Other skills can be gained as well.

More time in on Chip tonight. Lesson tomorrow!

Yay Michi! Keep up the good work!

My last lesson went very well...my teacher has actually encouraged me to start adding some groove to my practice drills, in preparation for actually making MUSIC on this thing!!! I didn't think I'd be this far along already...

...having said that, haven't picked it up for a full-bore practice in a week--did a few bits of noodling over the weekend but not my usual lost-in-space marathon sessions. Hopefully will get one in tomorrow.

Okay, now that everyone's wolfed a good Easter (or Passover) dinner...

...time to get playing! All I hear right now is crickets. :D

Even though I hadn't gotten much time in, my teacher still trusted me enough to throw lots of new material at me on Friday. We discussed my "98-pound weakling" pinky on the left hand, and I asked for suggestions to help build that up...

...he grinned and said, "Alright, I wasn't gonna show you this...it's a somewhat advanced technique...but..."

...and he showed me the hammer-on/pull-off technique, giving me an exercise to use all four fingers in succession with it (pinky workout, indeed!!), and had me peel off a string of 'em.

Tijn will know what I'm talking about. Maybe he'd be more able to explain why this is cool. :D

My teacher's da bomb. He knows all the tricks to building up my confidence. :top

Got enough tools in the arsenal now to not only schedule practice time, but a breakdown of what to cover each session. Got the chart all laid out, tonight begins the cycle. DISCIPLINE, YOUNG JEDI!!! :-D

Michi--are you learning any specific techniques on the sax?
    Angie--gotten any time in lately?
Tijn--how are your women? :devil Been a while since you got those Sadowsky strings--how are they holding up tone-wise?

    Angie--gotten any time in lately?
Tijn--how are your women? :devil Been a while since you got those Sadowsky strings--how are they holding up tone-wise?

My women are great. Shame that the one with the better shapes is just the one i cant touch ;)

Sadowsky strings are still great actually. Played a lot on them, and they only sound better and better.

*laughs* You'll get to touch her soon enough. Just don't neglect your first love in the meantime. :D

You might just have convinced me to get a set of those strings! Eventually--heck, I've had these D'Addario's on since January and they still sound and play fine. They don't really look worn either. Maybe I'm not practicing enough??? Schedule was really good in the weeks leading up to my last lesson, but has been pretty crap this week. Academics taking front seat again...my individual research project is now officially late. But at least I got that damn group project in and did alright on the final exam for that class. Next week starts my last class of the year!!

Still trying to figure out how I'm gonna keep my chops up over the summer with all the travelling...can't take Chip with me, unfortunately. I'm thinking headphone amp and a rented bass every so often along the way.

Found out something cool this week though--I guess playing an instrument is like learning how to ride a bike--once you learn, you never quite forget how. One of my students plays trombone in our "music club", and was having trouble with a part. I knew how it should sound but was having trouble explaining it to him...so I said, "Let me have a go..."

    I haven't played a trombone in over 10 years.

I picked that thing up, cleaned up the mouthpiece a bit, and jumped in...

Couldn't play the part to tempo--but I could at least nail all the notes, even the high-range stuff!!!

All that time gone--and I could still PLAY the fool thing. That made my day. *warm fuzzies*

    How's everybody doin'?

Me--amped practice ground to a halt. Chip is sick. :-( Bad ground wire in either the bass itself or in my instrument cable (though I'm getting howl out of all three I own, so I'm guessing it's the bass). Hoping "da boss" can recommend a good repair shop with expert service and fairly decent turnaround time, need him back in a couple of weeks at the latest so he can go to my brother's with me.

Geez, and I just bought that Cafe Walter headphone amp this morning, too...brand new shiny (expensive!!!!!) toy, and my poor bass won't be able to play with it for a bit...

Ah well, guess things could be worse. Still have the axe, it just needs a little TLC.

Sounds like you're having a bit of trouble with your bass???

    Re: The Practise Room

Yeah... :-( ...every time I plug in my bass lately, I get this annoying hum and crackle out of the amp. It's not the amp itself--as soon as you take the cable out of the jack, the hum goes away. So it's either in the cable or the bass, but I've tried all three of my cables and they're ALL doing it. Either I have three bum cables, or Chip needs to go to the "doctor". Will find out tomorrow at my lesson--if it happens with my teacher's amp as well, then we know it's the bass.

Or...may be some environmental noise or bad power source here in the dorm, instrument cables pick up every little thing...I know there's an excess of static in here, but that's been the case since I moved in, and the hum's only been noticeable for a few days.

*long exasperated sigh* My bass practice is what keeps me sane; take that away from me right now when I need it the most (moving and end-of-school-year stress), that's a recipe for one crabby woman. :( I COULD peel off scales acoustically, but I'm doing harmonics exercises at the mo'--I NEED to be able to hear everything!!! :motz

At least YOU don't have to plug in, Michi--how's that sax playin' goin'? 8)

Maybe you need more practise? :D

Wiseass. :D I do NOT sound that bad anymore, not even on a bad day. :rock

Just remember: My amp can mop the floor with your amp. (Oooooh, such a TalkBass moment--gear competition. )

Hey, how much time have YOU gotten in lately??? You're prepping for a trip too...

And still my sound is soooooo much better ;) ;)

I am getting in loads of time actually. Did some slappin today, seriously love it. Been slappin for the last weeks really.

Well, it had BETTER be...you've been playing a lot longer than I have!! I think I get around this thing alright considering I've only been playing since January, and don't get in as much time on it as I'd like given the nature of my job and my academic stuff to boot... :nee :D

Honestly. Giving the noob a hard time...you are not one with the zen of bass. Maybe your lady needs to slap YOU some instead of the other way around.

Glad you've been getting in good practice time though. :-D

Me...will try getting some in tonight, even if it's gotta be unplugged. I need stress relief.

Yeah, that's right! So what about an accoustic bass

My sax playing? Ooooh, I'm still too lazy. My current task is to learn this (accompanied by a CD track):

But it's just sooooo fast

That piece does move at a pretty good clip, saw the tempo marking...you can do it though. Just stick to it. 8) Practice it slower without the CD for a while--do you have a metronome? Do it at like 60 bpm instead of 90 for a while, to get the rhythm down and stick the notes, then speed it up. Let us know how it goes.

Acoustic bass? I wish. You just saw my post about spending too much money...now you're being the little :devil on my shoulder telling me to spend more!!!!! :D :D :D Can't touch even a used acoustic for under $150, it seems...and that's just for one like Steve's Guild. The double bass market is a whole other can of beans. (And a whole different track of lessons.)

Holy *BLEEP*!! Really cool track, but a very cookin' tempo!! Looked again at the music sheet--yeah. Half note at 90, not quarter note--this thing clicks along at 180 bpm!!

Yep, defo slow that one down. Good on you for going for something this challenging though!! :top

"Foghorn"... I'm sure you're not that bad!!! I used to refer to my trombone playing as "wounded buffalo".

    Re: The Practise Room

    Did my lesson--diagnosis is in.

Good news: It's NOT Chip or my cable--they both get a clean bill of health; worked just fine on my teacher's amp, no sound but clear bass thump.

Bad news: It's either the amp or the power supply in here. (Old dorm, the ground wire in the socket may have gone naff.)

Good news: I can get the amp looked at/fixed cheap, and the closest SWR repair shop is just a few miles from here. We can then rule that out or get it taken care of.

Good news 2: My Cafe Walter will probably be waiting for me at the post office Tuesday, so I can keep jammin' in the meantime. Just can't blow stuff off walls for a bit. :devil :rock :devil

Got to do a lil' old school R&B for my lesson as part of my harmonics drill--"My Girl". :D

    Re: The Practise Room

    sasred - 06.06.2006, 02:47

Results in: the amp was OK too. Just needed to adjust a couple knobs, and also plugging into the other outlet (grounded!) helped. And the guys bench tested it for FREE!! Big props to the guys at Guitar Works on Main in Evanston. :top

Now that that's sorted, got something ELSE to help put boom in my room. Meet Jade!!!

Can't get lighting to do her justice--she's Sonic Blue, the color is this GAWGEOUS medium teal--my favorite color!! And the black strings and black hardware--mmmmmmmm. Upgraded pickups and bridge, she plays SWEET. Nice growl off the Jazz pickup, and plenty of thump off the Precision one.

    She's a bit of a rare breed...

Made in Japan between '84 and '87--I'd be curious to find out what year. For her age, she's doing pretty well, just a few "character marks" here and there. She's actually in better shape than her brother, Chip, who's almost 10 years newer...

    ...but I love 'em both...probably the only "kids" I'll have for quite a while. :D :D :D :D :D

Proper room placement next school year will be essential. :devil :devil :devil

I'll be able to wind 'er up a bit next week once I start my travels. Just wish one of these two could come with me to England...but I don't have a flight case, and my gig bag won't go carry-on, too big. :-( Ah well. Grandma's "bass-sitting" while I'm gone. :-D
