    Cuba! Reviews
Starting a thread for one and all to give their thoughts on the latest DVD. I've seen it twice now (one view of my copy and one view over break--have a friend with a multi-region DVD player and a PAL/Region 2 copy). Need to take notes next time as I'm already forgetting what I wanted to say...

    General thoughts...

Mick seemed really nervous in the beginning, but warmed up to his old self once the tempo went up and the crowd started getting into it.

The renditions--good, but the live shows on the recent tour were even better. Though I do like the slower version of "Stars" played on the DVD, it's a nice touch. Also nice to see "Love Fire" come out of the ashes.

The cinematography--trippy. The director was going for that "50's movie" look and feel. Don't know how I feel about using that for a live music concert. I kinda like the live feed feel better...

The photo gallery--I'm sure those effects took a lot of work, and they do look neat, but would have preferred just plain ol' thumbnails to shuffle through one by one, so one can actually LOOK at the pics...the lighting on those black-and-whites was dim, and they're hard enough to see as is...

The choreography...a bit over the top, would have preferred just straight up salsa/samba, that's some sexy stuff!! And it would have suited the music better. I do appreciate the hard work those dancers put in though, they danced their hearts out and seemed genuinely excited to be a part of the project.

Other thoughts when I'm more lucid and have some track specifics.

What does everyone else think so far?

I watched the DVD last night and thought I would post a few thoughts. I am not as organized as Shannon was in her review :) Just some random thoughts that struck me as I watched.

At first I thought I was watching the video for the Perfect Love single~it seemed very scripted, and then Mick walked up onto the concert stage from the rear. That seemed a bit odd to me.

I loved the setting in the old Opera House~ just beautiful.

I LOVED the slow version of Stars~ wondered why it was not on the Simplified CD? It was wonderful.

The orchestra is a wonderful addition and I liked that they show them playing often thru the DVD. They add a depth aand richness to the music that I enjoy.

I thought Mick's voice and that of the girls/band was superb. It just felt very sterile and staged. Part of that may have been that this was kind of like their "dress rehersal" for the tour and they hadn't quite gotten in the groove with it yet. Does that make sense? It also seemed like the concept was "lets do a concert for the DVD" rather than "lets make a DVD out of a concert" It was definitely a planned out and rehersed for production~ more so than any other concert. I compare it to the Home~ Live in Sicily DVD which was filmed in a way that it seemed someone said that afternoon, "hey, why don't we just film this" There was a much more "natural" feel to Home.

So, now we get to the "highlight" of the show. I say that tongue in cheek....the dancers. Personally I thought they were way too "circus like" for the setting, mood, etc. I would have found it much more interesting to see couples in subdued colors doing some sexy little latin number (such as on the video for Perfect Love) rather than the colorful, far too choreographed dancing they did on this version of Perfect Love. To me it didn't captrue the sultry essence of the song or music. It was far to carnival for me. As for the use of the dancers thru the rest of the songs. Well, I am content watching Mick with his little white boy wiggle, half un-coordinated dance style :D You know what I mean~ the way he shakes and moves about. It is just him....the dancers just weren't.

But anyway~ don't get me wrong. The part I am most interested in~ the sound, the music and the band were fabulous. I could watch that trombone player for hours :top And the Lewinsons...all of them. It was great.

So overall I am happy with my purchase. And will continue to enjoy it. Now I just need a real concert to compare it too :)

CUBA DVD --- got it got it got it --and well worth the wait....

I just finished watching the entire CUBA DVD twice, then the documentary and the photos...patiently waited all this time for it to be released, it was compete with extras and surprises.

Well done Mick, the Band and everyone involved in the production. Shot out of a canon....perfect.
Just loved it, and yes I fell off the couch when Fairground shifted into high gear, even though I was warned months ago that it would happen, I was still surprised the 2nd time I watched.

YOU MAKE ME SMILE (still love that song so much)

After reading some of the reviews I tried not to have a preconceived opinion about it, but found it hard not to have my mind repeat some of those reviews while I was watching it.

Still, I was so hoping the sr.com site will reinvent itself, I was grumbling, just to be able to access all the info, lyrics, photos, etc, etc. etc., all of that disappeared when the concert began.....how does he nail it each time ? Probably with tons of rehearsals and perfectionism and strong ideals. Sticking to the program with the team. (Being the leader, tough job.)

The main vocal sound was clear, crisp and loud. Some of the instruments were not as clear or as loud and I adjusted the sound when there were solo performances. Does anyone have a comment about Ian's sax during Sad Old Red, was it different ? (Love your sax. Love the CD Sad Old Red sax.)

Dee and Sarah looked elegant and sounded wonderful, I loved with Mick sang in between you harmonizing....was great....glad we got to see you !

The arrangements, the harmonizing, the timing, the orchestra, the extra brass, the violins, the beautiful theater, the enthusiasm of everyone, the researsals, the preparation, the long travel and shipping of instruments, sound systems, technicians equipment, etc. all went very well (bravo).

Yes, I wanted to bring the Band up to the front of the stage with the lead singer, but the knobs would not make the adjustment to my screen. Liked it when you guys were closer together performing.

Wanted to watch the dancers on Another evening. (while watching Ed Sulivan on Nick At Nite channel instead of in front of the Band obstructing my VIEW.) They worked hard, but "not tonite dears" can't see the band.

Did I miss the Latin female singer on stage ? I didn't remember her being introduced, or did I miss it both times ? Or was she just on the CD ?

Wish I was with the camera operator a few times so I could see the rest of the Band more than we saw each dancer lace up her accessories. Most of the interest is in the singer and the band and occasionally having the camera show an excited fan dancing on the top of the back of somebody's shoulders in the audience.

(We needed BAND CAM this time around.) (We needed Mick Cam too, of course...) some of the "key" expressions on Mick's face during songs were missed.

In the documentary, wanted to see everyone in the band doing shots of local liquor in a seedy bar, before playing in a famous theater, smoking Cuban cigars, in a country that does not import paint products, or construct billboards to hide the buildings without paint. Maybe they have the paint, but no brushes ? Maybe brushes but no ladders ?

Funny that all the 57 Chevy's are perfectly painted fresh from the body shop, hope some of the band members or staff took one of them home as a new toy. I digress.......

    Congratulations....you topped yourself again....

Will sleep on it and watch it again in the morning after tea.

    Love,
    Lin xx

    :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

    Love the reads so far...
Angie--a John Johnson fan, are you?? What's with us Yanks all "claiming" band members? :devil Seems like the Brits mostly prefer Mick, he's a native son, it makes sense...but so are the rest of the band members!!

And you and Lin covered some of the things I wanted to say but forgot. Lin in particular--YES, the band were way too far back!!!!! I'm glad I wasn't at those shows--would have needed binoculars to see Steve and the Horny Horns even if I were front row!!!!! A "Band Cam" would have been nice. That stage setup was not conducive to the musicians interacting like they normally do, and combining that with the nerves they were probably feeling (first major gig on the new material), the vibe back there was much more subdued and business-like. Great sound, but less of the antics I love to watch.

Lining up the whole band on that platform in back of the dancers...um...no. Blocked the view of them, yes, and did you notice stage exit was a bit tricky for the dancers after? Steve's bass escaped with its life. (Had me cringing--that's over $3,000 worth of beautiful wood craftsmanship. WATCH IT!!!!)

The sound mix was a little too vocal-heavy, I always watch my DVD's through my good sound system and I noticed some stuff getting buried too. The sound mix on the Instant Live CD's was much, much better.

But to end on a positive note--Sad Old Red. YES. May this track never leave the set list again. Sheer bliss. :-} :rock :clap *wolf whistles* These guys just tear that track the hell up, time after time. The building energy makes me want to leap out of my skin with joy.

Oh, and Lin--that drum kickoff in Fairground is best appreciated at deafening volume. Think of the opening in that track as the slow climb up the first hill on a roller coaster...and Pete's enthusiastic skin beating as the G-force slamming you in the gut as you make the plummet back down. (The volume will help the bass drum achieve this effect. :devil) The rest of the track gives you the same crazy head buzz as streaking through the loops...you emerge at the end with your head swimming and a euphoric grin on your face. Beautiful effect...whoever came up with that idea in the band was a genius...music at its most powerful, moving more than just the ears.

I need to watch this again. But when???? :-(

Wonderful reviews Lin and Shannon! I need to watch again and then watch the extra's. I didn't have time the other night.

Yes, Shannon~ I am a John Johnson fan~ love the sound of the trombone and he just gets into it SO much. Love watching that man :)

A band-cam would be fantastic. You know I do love Mick, don't get me wrong. That voice and his personality just melt my heart but each one of the band members fascinates me to no end. They are just so passionate and have such fun with what they do. It is just a wonderful thing to see. And combined they are just magical!

I'll make room for watching the dvd again today. LOL Lin~ the Fairground version...my husband just LOVES it and got the CD Single as they have that version on it. He just blasts that sucker in the car! I just smile

    have a great day all~

the only thing.......and it's truly not a complaint just something I noticed...

The audience was not as EXCITED as I guess as the audience in the Sicily DVD...or even as excited as the audience I was apart of in Sheffield & Birmingham.

However when COME TO MY AID came on...the audience immediately jumped up and got into motion.

I guess I was sitting there wondering how it's possible to sit through a SR concert, and sit still.....no matter what song is being perfomed...lol

The best thing on this dvd is that the Mick cam is gone. Someone must have told mick that its rather arrogant and sad that there is an option on a dvd to only watch the leadsinger the entire gig trough. Or maybe he started to get some respect for his band.

True Knok that's what I think aswell, it seems he picked some sort of (beautiful) puppets to sit on the front rows.
If you see a gig when we are present it's a hell of a party and I cannot find anyone who is partying at the front.
At the back ok but those people should be at the front I think!
I don't have the feeling the audience is enjoying themselves! :motz

knokak~ I notcied the same thing and I just wonder if it is a cultural thing. I am not real sure how often the Cubans are treated to and or exposed to something like a live concert etc. It may be their was of being respectful? Where as to us the ultimate sign of gratitude it to sing along and hop around :)

It would be interesting to see what Mick and the bacn thought about that aspect of the audience as well. It had to be something that they were not used to either~the crowd being so sedate. But in the extra features all those whom they spoke to just thought the show and Mick's voice were fantastic. I just wonder if they are not al that exposed to the Music of SR? It seems they knew the older stuff~ like ths songs from Picture Book and thats it :) LOL

As for the Mick cam~ yeah, I didn't miss it. I found it odd to watch just him and not the band. I honestly don't think he does it out of arrogance though. Nor do I think he left it out this time because he appreciates the band. Chalk it up to~
hey the fnas might like this if me give them more Mick" They did in once, now move on.

Still, I'll take any dvd as who knows when I'll get to see the real thing :)

    As far as the audience...
Some of you might remember the reviews left by the Brits that won the chance to go to those shows. If I recall, there were people up front that WANTED to get up and dance, but were told NOT to by the film crew. So some of that sedateness you can put down to the director and his vision for the film. I think he wanted a mellower vibe. I'm sure it put a crimp in the fans' day, and now it's putting one in ours watching. You could see what the band thought of it...it showed in the performance. They didn't come alive until the audience did--and it makes sense. Low-key feedback makes them wonder--"Am I doing alright? Are they enjoying themselves? Or are they just clapping because they're being polite?" More enthusiastic feedback gives them more energy, and they start having more fun, too. Hope the producers of this DVD learn from this.
As far as the MickCam...who knows why it didn't come back, probably a logistics issue. People either loved it or hated it. I watched it once and that was enough--funny, but when a musician is SOLOING, I like to see THAT MUSICIAN. It's THEIR turn to shine, they're in the backdrop enough as it is.

Another thing I thought of--was nice to see Kevin talking at length in the documentary, since he got missed out completely in the Sicily one. Would have liked to have heard from everyone else as well...Pete's and Sarah/Dee's bits were a tad too short for my taste...

in reference to the cultural thing.....i spoke to my good friend here in the office Ramone..who is from CUBA.....he said that my thoughts on the audience sounds right....they are not a free country..they are not free to express self pleasure... etc etc..he gave me this entire spill on his country for about an hour.......that had me like WOW....and also it made sense to me as to why COME TO MY AID would move them.........YOU LEARN SOMETHING NEW EVERYDAY

After speaking to him....i'm more inclined to think that the more "laid back" response we all noticed was more a cultural thing than that of the the film crew, Mick etc etc..... After all they hardly clapped.....I don't think the film director would have stopped them from clapping.....lol

Knokkak~ I am glad you confirmed what I was thinking. I too had wondered about the significance of Come to My Aid and why that one song did hit home with the crowd.

I am not one to engage in political banter but my first thought was that it (cultural/political) was the main reason for the subdued reaction. They have to keep their feelings close to the cuff so to speak.

I loved the part on the documentary section when Mick was listening to the young trumpet player who was just fantastic~ they were playing for him a recording of Perfect Love and he was improvising along with it not having heard it before. This young boy was so gracious that Mick was in appreciation for what he was playing. It was very touching.

As they say, music is an international launguage and regardless of how one group may respond outwardly to the music of SR~ it seems that it touches all those in the same way internally. I think the Cuba disc is a wonderful lesson for us all :)

no problem Night!...if anyone has the answer.....I haven't thoroughly watched the documentary yet........but my friend Ramone wanted to know what made Mick choose to go to CUBA...also he was shocked that they let him in...lol...i gave him my little spin about Mick and he is always for "the people" and the "good causes in life" etc etc..but perhaps one of you have the REAL reason..lol

    Re: Cuba! Reviews

    night nurse - 20.01.2006, 20:55

I think you are right~ Mick has always been a "for the people" guy and likes to stand up for what he believes. That and his interest in the Cuban music I think are enough reason for him to want to go there.

I too was suprised they let him in~ as they don't generally let many folks in I don't think. But you will see every so often that the government there does something that I often wonder if it is to boost their image in the eyes of their own countrymen and the rest of the world? Again, I am not a student of politics but merely making an observation. This concert being one of the occassions where Castro allowed a "treat" for his citizens? I bet your friend is fascinating to listen too :)

Thanks for the interesting chat :)

If you follow the interviews you'd know that Andy Wright took the song that Mick wrote (Perfect Love) and gave it a Latin feel....

They were looking for an exotic place to film the concert DVD and had the suggestion to try CUBA because it is not commercialized, the theater is very elite, and it was an historical event to welcome British performers, Simply Red was just one of several....

    Re: Cuba! Reviews

    sasred - 27.02.2006, 10:50

Been a while since we played with this one, lots of new members have joined since...let's hear some thoughts. In the meantime, here's my track-by-track breakdown (very train-of-thought, pardon! :D ):

A Song For You--will forever associate this song with Bladesman. Beautiful ivories work.

Your Mirror--I hear bass, but don't see Steve and don't see an upright in the pit. PHANTOM BASS!!!!

Stars--LOVELY sax, well done Ian. And the strings are a beautiful touch as well. Actually like this version.

    For Your Babies--stage lighting--AAAAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!

So Beautiful--YES!! Mick's cheeky grin and the band in the groove.

Smile--much, much, much better on here than on Simplified. Great climax fueled by energy off Pete.

Home--can't tell what John's shaking, someone asked me...and idiot me has been in two huge music shops with full percussion section in the last two weeks--you think I looked? :D But anyway, am attached to this song, they could do it punk style and I'd still like it.

Sad Old Red--!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! KILLER. AWESOME. How 'bout them Horny Horns, ladies and gentlemen??? And the rest of the band. The English language is insufficient to describe how much I like this track.

    HBTY--like this version. Go Kenji!!

It's Only Love--Dave's having a good time. :-D And Kenji's on a roll. That breakdown with the strings is very, very cool.

More--to the detractors--less bass? I don't think so. Get a decent sound system. And tell my windows there's less bass. Heh heh heh. :devil Kudos to Steve for the fingers and Roger for the axe. ( at Tijn)

    Love Fire--ahhhhhhhh. *burbles*

Sunrise--another percussion instrument I've forgotten the name of. Been out of orchestral band WAY too long.

The Right Thing--nice slice o' funk. The crowd really seem to dig it.

Come To My Aid--more blazin' horns! And curiosity begs me to ask: What did Steve say to Dee? :D

Perfect Love--the extra brass kicks A$$, as far as I'm concerned, no horn section is too big. :top

Fairground--the second half MUCH better, like the new hybrid version, but seeing the band have to sit still during a track they normally go ape-bananas for was very strange.

Something Got Me Started--again, used to seeing the band get lost in the groove, not sit there and rock back and forth a wee bit. Very strange dance during this one too--what WAS that???

If You Don't Know Me By Now--SR own this track as far as I'm concerned, but I question the choice of it as a closing tune--it's about breaking up, it's maudlin, it's almost depressing. One should leave an SR concert on a total high, and this sort of takes people down a few pegs, especially after the high-energy romps prior. Wouldn't you want to end on that bang? *shrugs*

Alright, hope to see more observations, and I have my rubber smock on for the rotten tomatoes coming my way for the above. :clown

Didn't like this DVD much at all. I truly don't like most of the new versions of the old songs, except for "Sad Old Red." That new version KICKS ASS!! Love that swingin' 1940's sound 8)
This DVD doesn't compare with "Live In London" or even "Home: Live In Sicily." Those 2 were much better. Sorry, just my opinion (no tomatoes, please!!) LOL!
