(Yeah, you have to be tanking them. Thier AI has 0.5% chance to split each time they attack, which is actually not that often. The biggest problem is that as the mob increases in size, it becomes more and more difficult to have a normal character tank them. They don't actually hit that lightly. By the end we were using a champion in MS (snapped around with MB and then quickly MS'd before mob got to him), sacrificed by a tank paladin healed by two priests in strings.
I doubt its abusable, if you want to get crazy mobs just go to juperos for considerably less hassle and considerably more exp. Atleast in juperos you don't have to tank the massive mobs for minutes at a time to get more monsters. Still, its very fun to do and I imagine that you could generate gaos to make leveling a low level character less of a drag. )
