    Glendale, Arizona to Cortez, Colorado

On 4-5 June of 2005 I flew from my home base, Glendale, Arizona, to visit a pilot friend in Cortez, Colorado. As excuses to fly go, this one was excellent :!: Not only would I have a good social outting but see some new and spectacular scenery on the way. A win-win :P

Flying into northern Arizona gives instant relief from the brown, dusty desert. Here I cross a canyon in the redrock formation just east of famed Sedona.

Green soon turns into dry, flat, boring desert again. Along the way I pass an old friend, Barringer Meteor Crater just west of Winslow. What a special spot :!: A while back I made a special trip there for photos. Can you make out the low museum building on the far side, east of center :?:

Here we are in an area very similar to the tourist-jammed Painted Desert. These colorful, layered piles were formed by the ash falling from distant volcanoes over long periods of time and have since been eroded to make them all the more interesting.

A lonely butte stands out from the flat desert floor, giving testimony to the volcanic past it has seen. :o

Another tourist attraction passes below me, this one the exotic anthropological site, Canyon de Chelly on the Navajo Reservation. You can get the scale of it by focusing on a tree in the bottom of the canyon :!:

The scenery just gets more enticing as I pass north-northeast on the way to the border with New Mexico. This is another shot of Canyon de Chelly.

Wow :!: :!: I've never crossed the Chuska Mountains before. Great geometry and incredible color :!: You just couldn't appreciate these from the ground.

At 9,500' I was almost too close as I passed the Chuska Range. A geographer's treat awaited me on the north side as I spotted an obvious volcanic butte centered perfectly in a large area of depositional red rock. Amazing  and a wonder to behold.

I knew this was coming and planned for it. I deviated from gps-direct a little to the east for photos of Shiprock, in the northwest corner of New Mexico. Incredible :!: Another geographer's dream, and I had the greatest view of it :!:

Shiprock has two spines, or dikes, that form a wide "V" as if the butte had been speeding along through water and throwing up a wake behind it. Here's a close shot of the one that goes from Shiprock to the southwest. I didn't realize these were here

Cortez Airport (CEZ) in southwest Colorado. What a handsome sight :!: In short order I met up with my friend Pete and we sucked some suds in the presence of a very attractive barkeep at "Blondie's" 8) I think she wants me.

More fantastic geography on the way home. Here a pure white butte of limestone stands out from the eroded desert floor. Great contrast in color :!:

Fascinating. The feature on the left is apparently a dike, and the part on the right looks like it could be uplifted, but both are obvious volcanic intrusions into the largely depostional desert floor. I try to imagine the volume of material that has been eroded away but can't. :?

More dikes. Dorsal fins of under-desert sharks swimming at random. Boy I love geography, and the southwestern USA is the place for it :D

    Glendale, Arizona to Cortez, Colorado

Thanks for the high compliment, Daniel. I'm glad you enjoyed the photo-story but no, I'm an amateur and just do it for my own enjoyment. :P Of course I don't mind my family and friends being a little envious :D

Geography has always been fascinating since I learned the language, and being able to see those landforms from the air makes it all the more so.

Hey, you'll just have to take more vacations so you can get more of the world covered :!:

    Ken
