Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee
I´m pretty much sure, that the link already got put up here on the board, but I want to do it so everyone has the chance to take a look at that wonderful new mini-series. I wish so bad that I could see it !!! Hopefully it will come out on DVD this year and maybe I can get it while I´m in the States.

I know this one will make me cry - the trailer already did ! It´s because of the story and the fact that the Sioux people just had no chance at all !!!

There are some really good comments of Adam Beach and Aidan Quinn! Watch out for them !

I just saw this movie last night, and I have to say, it was hard to watch sometimes! Oh, everything that took place was so full of darkness, there wasn't a light moment the harshness just kept going to the end. Adam is a very good actor, I didn't know he was so good. It was hard seeing eddie cry, and he did a lot of crying that is for sure, it was too real. At times toward the end I wanted to get out of my seat, I couldn't take anymore. Pure emotion and reality, is how I would describe the film. You all should see it, it's good to learn the history.

Watch 15 minutes Sunday night... watched same 15 mins Monday night... but HUBBY WAS MAKING ME CRAZY AND WOULDN'T LET ME WATCH IT!!!!

SO, I finally stayed up and watched it last night (still Monday night, but very late) and have to say- OMG!!! So sad to see that some people were so ignorant. And I loved the fact that they gave both sides of the view, not just one. It was also great to see that even the "heros" are not perfect people, and they thought they were doing good for the Indians, but it turns out that you can only do so much when you rip a culture from a people and expect them to just graciously accept the change.

Very powerful performances from all the actors. I'm not a big Anna Paquin fan, but I do think she did an above average job (being coy I know) and was very pleased she choose to do the film. Yes Emerald, it was very hard to see Eddie crying- it just rips your heart to pieces when he is mourning the losses in his life.   This was a stellar performance from Nathan Lee Chasing His Horse- and I could go on and on about all the actors, because they certainly deserve it, but I'll keep this post short. Definite recommendation if you are able to watch it.

Also, saw a glimpse of a new movie HBO will be doing in 2008 called "John Adams". In case you may not know- he was one of our presidents during the "formative years". Laura Linnie plays his wife Abigail- so I foresee this to be a wonderful epic as well.

I saw the trailer for John Adams too. I watched in Sunday night but had so many interuptions I watched it again on Monday - it was awsome but painful and you are right at least it showed both sides..

I got the HBO channels for a special they were running for $13.00 a month (direct TV) you could have them - really didn't have the extra money but thought what the hey.

Sean was impressive as well - he lost like Eddie did....but didn't cry.

I think I cried enough for him and throughout the movie.

Glad you got to see the movie. I sent you an email about it- just an FYI. So how many boxes of tissues did you use? I have about 1 box of 216 almost gone.

Re: Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee

    enelya06 - 30.05.2007, 13:56

I went through just about a box. I watched it Sunday night (with so many interuptions) I decided to watch it again on Monday. I could not put my feelings into too many words for fear it would come out all wrong...but it was extremely painful.

I wish our European and Oz friends could see this movie. If I hear of it going onto DVD, I'll be sure to let you know. I watched it again tonight and I'm just falling in love with the movie. I wish it was longer, but 2 hrs. 10 minutes just isn't long enough to see our guys. The reviews over here have been very positive. The only downside was that the NA actors were underutilized (especially Eric Schweig and Nathan Lee Chasing Horse) from what one article said. Which I do agree- I Loved Eric's part in this movie. He has a face that can tell a whole story without ever saying a word.

it's going to be shown the whole month of June as well but I'll wait for the DVD to come out since I cancelled HBO.

They are calling for a chance of t-storms here this weekend - I hope we get a little something.

Tonight is my long night - I have to work JCP from 5 to 10 - I'll leave here in about a hour and go straight there but I'm off this weekend. :P

Yeah I'm hoping they win some - they have the most nominations - fingers crossed.

HELP! I thought I had read on here (or somewhere) that someone posted the release date for BMHAWK DVD as September 11th - but I can't find a post about it here and can't find any info about it else where - I swear I'm losing my mind, did I make that date up?

Re: Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee

yes, it´s scheduled to release September 11th. You can already preorder it.

can we preorder at the BMHAWK site.

Do you know where from? I can't find a listing of it on amazon.com. Thanks.

Re: Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee

    let me check.

Re: Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee

what you need to do is in the search line type in Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee DVD. I did this and it brought me to Amazon and there the movie was - however it did say it wasn't available right now but would be out 9/11 (not a favoriate date) but I saw nothing about preordering. I do know that some stores like Sam Goody and Suncoast will let you pre-order it. They ask you to put down $5.00 and then you pay the balance when the movie comes in.

Re: Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee

    redc - 19.07.2007, 20:41

Coolio - thanks enelya06 - I seriously thought I was losing my mind!

Oh I forgot to mention that the Primetime Emmys are live on Fox Sunday September 16th @ 8:00 pm EST.

Re: Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee

    newnativspirit - 19.07.2007, 20:45

you can preorder at amazon.com! There is a button "preorder now" and you´ll get asked if you want an email notification once the Dvd is available. It should also be possible at HBO (I remember that for Into the West there was a preorder button on the TNT website for the Dvd as well)... but I didn´t check that out. Amazon should work for you ...

I preordered ITW in a store at the West Edmonton Mall when I was there back in 2007 - if you have any good music or Dvd store around it should be possible at well - just go and ask. They can check their order lists in the computer and let you know when the new movies do come in.

Re: Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee

    enelya06 - 19.07.2007, 21:23

    Hey no problem.

Suncoast/SamGoody will let you preorder it and that's probably what I'll do because I can go get it when it comes out.

I just hope they win something. I feel it may but it's up against some pretty good others - course I've not seen the others because they appear stupid to me. (Just my opinion)

Funny - 'cause I keep thinking the same. 17 nominations - they HAVE to win something.

Re: Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee

yes I know and some of them were like first on the list some were 2nd and a few were 3rd.

Re: Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee

    newnativspirit - 21.07.2007, 11:09

Let´s see what will happen. I´m not sure, but wasn´t Michael nominated for an Emmy as well (ITW) and didn´t win? I´m sure BMHAWK will get some Emmy´s, but to be honest I doubt that it will be one of the NA actors to get one ... we will see.

Re: Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee

    eddiefever - 22.07.2007, 01:35

i think the same as Anne
the NA actors deserve it ,but i doubt that they will get them

btw it happend before that a movie with so many nominations went hope empty handed or with just 1 or 2 prises
besides ,that Godfather serie must be very populair
so i think that one will win a lot of awards :?

What happend with the NA people after Wounded Knee?

Re: Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee

    newnativspirit - 22.07.2007, 14:49

Historically, Wounded Knee is generally considered to be the end of the Indian Wars, the collective multi-century series of conflicts between colonial and U.S. forces and American Indian peoples. But it wasn´t.

The NA people kept on living on the reservations and for some time dealed with their situation, but there were always people fighing the white governement.

The government tried to hide the big tragedy from the US population and they´ve been successful with this for a while. In the late 20th century, critical reaction to the event became more widespread and vocal. Many consider the incident one of the most grievous atrocities in United States history.

Finally in 1970 it was the subject of the best-selling book "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee" by historian Dee Brown, which we all know from the movie. Some of you might have read it and know what it is about ... Mela, try to get it!

More than eighty years after the massacre (February 27 in 1973) Wounded Knee was also the site of a 71-day standoff between federal authorities and militants of the American Indian Movement. This was when even Europe got aware of NA people in America!

There is a Memorial Ride to Wounded Knee each year and you can visit the Wounded Knee Hill.
Still the people do suffer from that masacre, cause it was definitely the end of lots of hopes and dreams. The NA people realized that there is no way back to the old days.

Too many people had to die for no reason !!! Not only at Wounded Knee, but also since the day the white man came to Turtle Island.

"We were pow-wowing to our hearts content; We had the great spirit, we didn't need a president; 'Long came a white man from the civilized nations; now he ain't having second thoughts; but we've got reservations."

Re: Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee

    Mela - 23.07.2007, 16:42

Thanks for the info Anne!! Iam hate how the white men have threated the NA people: :( :x Is this the biggest genocide?

Re: Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee

    redc - 24.07.2007, 01:51

Mela wrote: Thanks for the info Anne!! Iam hate how the white men have threated the NA people: :( :x Is this the biggest genocide?

I'm not sure if it's the 'biggest' genocide as the numbers aren't too concrete (let's be honest no one in North America was interested in taking count before C.C. arrived). I'm not 100% certain, but I think that WWII would be the biggest genocide - those numbers are staggering.

But with that said, imho (and I'm sure yours and most everyone), regardless of the actual numbers - genocide in and of its self is horrible, wrong, evil, ignorant, arrogant, etc. It's some 'loser' in power trying to 'exterminate' a group of people for no reason what so ever. Said 'loser' may think he has a reason, but in reality (something I think they are lacking) - there is no reason, none, nada for that type of action.

    It's pathetic.

Why should they have punished anybody for Wounded Knee?

Nobody really cared about so many NA people were dying at WK. Reporters weren´t allowed to tell the truth and it took years until some true reports about Wounded Knee suddenly appeared. They made such a big thing out of the Ghost Dance, that the people were scared and for sure that the NA people were getting ready to start kind of war against the white people. So the whites were only defending themselves at WK. Only those who experienced WK themselves knew what really happened.

It´s a shame what happened - I mean, the way of information at this time. But as long as the public doesn´t get aware of the truth they can´t judge! That was a save way for the governement/army to prove their actions as the right ones.

Yes the government still doesn't want the people to know the truth but I'm so glad a movie was made about it. There were also more whites and even soldiers who did not want to fight and live in peace but then you had the dog soldiers (renegades). There were bad on both sides but the innocent were the ones who paid the price. It's like that in todays world and has been for generations. It only takes 1 to stir the pot.

It was genocide, I wasn't implying that what happened during the Indian Wars (and to some extent continued to this day) was not genocide - it was. Most of the early settlers wanted the NA/FN people gone. Period.

In response to the "who where the Dog Soldiers?" - this is directly from the BMHAWK book:

Quote: The Southern Cheyennes had drifted below the Platte River, establishing villages on the Colorado and Kansas plains. Black Kettle of the Southern branch had been a great warrior in his youth. In his late middle age, he was the acknowledged chief, but the younger men and the Hotamitaneos (Dog Soldiers) of the Southern Cheyennes were more inclined to follow leaders such as Tall Bull and Roman Nose, who were in their prime.

enelya06 wrote: I know the Crow were very brutle to the Lakota but I think in each tribe they had some "trouble makers"

    Exactly.

And who was it who said the Crow were the most hostile? Meaning, it's usually the 'victim' who says such things - so in reality it's not the most honest assessment of a group of people. Not that it's wrong to say the Crow were the most hostile...but it's like tribal names...it seems that it was never the actual 'tribe' telling the settlers their collective name - it seems that it was their neighbour.

For instance I'm sure if you asked the Crow what they thought of the Lakota people after a 'raid' - they would not have nice things to say about them - and in their (the Crow's) opinion the Lakota would be the most hostile/violent.

So really, it all depends on who you ask and when you ask.

    Hope that makes sense.

I think the Northamerican indians were quite harmless. If you look to Middleamerica you find tribes who killed people as a sacrifice. I'm not sure which one and I don't know the eniglish name either, but I can search for it if you want me to.

I´ve read that they were quite peaceful people as long as each tribe stayed in its territory.

I´m pretty much sure that the North American tribes had some real cruel rituals as well ... just remember what happened to women when they fooled their men. If we would go further into it, it would take us months to list everything up, cause there were too many different tribes with totally different rituals - that was before the white man came to "rescue" the savage people. Then it changed pretty fast, cause so many people got killed and different tribes got put together on reservations ... culture and rituals got mixed up and lots of rituals got forbidden, because they were kind of cruel. It´s really pretty complex, but to find out about the real old ways - that was way before Christopher Columbus!

I'm not so sure I'd use the word 'harmless'. They did 'fight' with each other - some may have been more peaceful - and I'm sure it wasn't 'war' all the time - but some did conduct raids on other people for their horses/land. To think they were a completely peaceful people prior to the arrival of the European's is a bit narrow-minded (not saying this about you, just saying).

I do wish the best for all the actors and the movie itself being nominated, but I would rather watch something that is more interesting. My own opinion, don't want to influence anyone. Besides- who would want to see Tom Cruise when you can see Eddie Spears?????

It would be a tie for me to watch Brad or Eddie. But in this case- because the awards show isn't my cup of tea, I would rather watch Eddie.

Now, I will have to agree with you both there! I tolerated Tom when he was married to Nicole Kidman, but I always thought there was something not quite right about him. It's in his eyes I think. As for Brad, I never saw what all of the fuss was about, but am willing to make exceptions for him in Legends of the Fall and Troy (maybe it was the long hair)!

 OMG I finially watched BMHAWK (got the DVD as a birthdaypresent from a friend) and I am really impressed. This is such a good movie - and really shocking. I feel so sorry for all the innocent that had died, and of course their families. and I am shocked that, though Court ruled that there must be paid 600 million $ to the tribes it hasn't happened yet...

maybe you are also shocked that still so many things regarding NA people didn´t happen yet ... they are still fighting for so many things courts already ruled so many years ago.

But I´m glad you finally got the movie. Didn´t watch it since I´ve been to the States last year :)

    Imagine that... :
the Hungarian HBO showed this fantastic film at last!!! hurray!!!
so we can watch it in the Hungarian tv in Hungarian :)
and I can spread the word to everyone to watch it.
I recorded it to vhs too.
Love this film! Love August Schellenberg!!! :) He was so fantastic!!!

I have to add to this film, that as I know Ohiyesa was not there at the battle of Little Big Horn!!! so still have to watch carefully.
Okay okay I should watch it as a normal person, but I cannot.
I saw it not the first time, and I watched the weapons and the militia and the historical facts again. Although this time I cried when they showed the massacre.

Anyone have to see this film, so if you can, watch it.
Or just read the book. I think it is very very important to know the real
    facts about these events.

Today I plan to see August's other film, the Black Robe, which is about the catholic missions too. Another great film with HIM, and it is a book adaptation which was written after real facts, because the author did some research about the topic as I learned.

Maybe in Germany they will show BMHAWK too, I keep the fingers crossed for it.

I doubt that they will show it on German TV for we don´t have an HBO channel and other channels won´t be interested in it ... maybe Pay TV will show it, because they also showed Into the West, but then this was a Spielberg Production. Another reason why I think that they won´t show BMHAWK on German TV is that it´s already available on DVD ...
