The committee, comprising of the panel of judges, said in their statement: "The committee unanimously voted for Mahmoud Darwish because he is a pillar of Arab poetry. He became a symbol for his ability to reach out to readers and his devotion to maintaining the Palestinian national identity."
The award was handed to Darwish by the Egyptian minister of education, Farouq Husni, along with the secretary general of the higher council for culture, Jabir Asfoor.
After he received the award, Darwish delivered a speech, in which he said,
"I was chosen to be honored while there are many other poets who deserve this honor and I accept that award on behalf of them all. It is a very sentimental moment for me, and I feel I can't find appropriate words to express my feelings and to thank the Egyptian people who persuaded us that poetry is still necessary in our lives."

hajati, wie schön! :D Schön, dass dieser wunderbare palästinensische Dichter, den ich durch dich kennen- und lieben gelernt habe, durch den award geehrt wird und schön, dass Du ihn mit einem passenden Bild dazu ehrst. Auch von mir einen herzlichen Glückwunsch an Darwish! smatch1
