The Perennial Favourite: What Are You Listening To Today?
Every incarnation I've seen of the SR boards (official and unofficial), this topic achieves megathread status...it's always cool to see how people's music choices change with day and mood. So thought I'd start it here.

Since I'm on the road and haven't had much chance to spin my usual, thinking back to what I was groovin' on before leaving for school holiday.

Sheila E., "A Love Bizarre"...never get sick of that track. She could GROOVE.
Marcus Miller. I think M-2 was the last album in. Bass god. 'Nuf said.
Opaz feat. Ray Hayden, 'Back From The Raggedy Edge'. Smooth R&B/jazz fusion/hip-hop hybrid out way before its time.
Kate DeAraugo, 'A Place I've Never Been'--THANKS, PAT!!! *squeal*

'The Essential Earth, Wind, and Fire'--cannot get enough of those smokin' grooves and red-hot brass arrangements...2 discs of sheer bliss, been on insane rotation since it came home with me a month ago.
Marvin Gaye, 'Gold'--why it took me all these years to grab this, I don't know, but boy...not enough superlatives for this guy. Another 2 discs of transport off the earth.

...and one track I listened to last night, Wham!, "Battlestations". Nice use of solo trombone in a pop track! One of Wham!'s better tracks in general, rather underrated though as it was on their second-last album that didn't sell all that well, at least not Stateside...

What's riding everyone else's sound waves?

Re: The Perennial Favourite: What Are You Listening To Today?

What am I listening to right now? Right Right now? :D

The Beatles 1. Track 18. All You Need Is Love.

Josh Rouse. Apologies, but it is a pirate from a friend at work who downloads all the time. Just lovin' it.
Elton John/Bernie Taupin. Captain and The Kid
    The Whitlams. Little Cloud

The above list that have been getting the hell knocked out of them, both in the car and at home for the last few weeks.

I'll do an edit in here, rather than add another posting.
Agree Shannon, Jay Kay does get me quite excited with his music too and do love his clever use of instruments. Too many artists lose quality (instrumental) sounds in the banging, crashing and strumming of drums and guitars.

Ahhh, Kill Me Softly With Your Song................ :D

    Cheers
Pat (who's wondering why we spell it 'bass' when it is pronouned 'base'?)

'Cuz if you pronounce it like it's spelled, people think you're talkin' 'bout the fish.

And I know what made you think of it. You have to give me a sample of this guy's work, you keep raving about how good it is...

I like anything that gives my 15" woofers a workout and does structural damage to my domicile.

Jamiroquai's 'A Funk Odyssey' is good for that. Particularly "Feel So Good", "Main Vein", and the title track. Great album overall. Jay Kay is proof that funk is not just a black thing. I've noticed that British acts in general do not assign color to musical styles--and I respect that a lot. Wish more American acts would wise up like that.

Jamiroquai...is good. It really gets under my skin when music styles are linked to certain groups. Music is for everyone, it belongs to no one. I hate the labelings/genre titles. I love Ray Charles statement. Before all the labeling, all he knew was "Music."

Sheila E. :D Bad drummer girl she is. "A Love Bizzare" for sure! And "Glamorous Life". You flashed me back to Krush Groovin days. Marvin Gaye...that says it all. I love "After The Dance." EARTH, WIND & FIRE, can't say enough...amazing live.

    Beatles & Elton John...:D

Well...I'm been groovin to Frankie Beverly & Maze. :D One of my favorite groups. "Before I Let Go" & "Southern Girl"

    Later,
    Queenie

Re: The Perennial Favourite: What Are You Listening To Today?

    sasred - 02.01.2007, 08:41

Heard of Frankie Beverly & Maze...but not listened to any of their stuff. Any you recommend, Queenie?

Thanks for the compliment on our musical knowledge, John...I know Queenie and Pat haven't even scratched the surface of their respective collections... ...and I'd knock everyone out cold rattling off mine. I'll let everyone else say WHY they're so music-mad...for me, it was a sanctuary from a less-than-happy childhood. It kept me going through some pretty rough times--at some points, I credit it for keeping me ALIVE. These days, it's there 'cause I want it, it's a part of me that I don't feel whole without. So that's why I've got so much of it.

As was painfully pointed out to me playing Trivial Pursuit (80's edition) this evening  , my music obsession has made me very weak in other entertainment arenas...can't name movies, actors, actresses, or TV shows to save my life.

(Still won the game though...skated through with the music knowledge!!!)

Anywhoo-back on topic--we had one of the 80's stations going on the satellite radio while playing--highlights for me were "People Are People" by Depeche Mode and "Automatic" by the Pointer Sisters. Might listen to some Talking Heads before bed. :D

And Pat...'Captain and the Kid'--a true part two to Captain Fantastic? That is my fave Elton John album, wondering if this new one is worth the grab. Your thoughts?

Re: The Perennial Favourite: What Are You Listening To Today?

    redorro - 02.01.2007, 22:26

Shannon. I think most people who study Elton John's music at any length all agree that Captain Fantastic was one of the best stories/lyrics Bernie Taupin has written. Although not a real commercial success as others, they released.

They are touting The Captain and The Kid as the next installment of Captain Fantastic. And in my opinion, I can really see the similarities in style. Captain Fantastic was written when they struggled through (music) life and Captain and The Kid is written at the time they are successful and reflecting back on the 'early' stages of thier partnership.

I don't like saying to people 'it's great go and get it'. Everyone has different opinions.

Personally. I just love The Captain and The Kid. :D Great stories put to great music. Rock'y, yes. Ballad, not so much (thank goodness). Go and have a listen at your local music store. I'm sure it will grab you immediately. :P It did me when I heard it live at the concert in Sydney in December.

    Cheers
    Pat

Thanks for the tips, Pat. Will pursue that when I'm in more of a Elton mood...not been feelin' him lately. But I'm sure I'll come around to him again, I always do.

Current mood had these on my MP3 player last night:
    "The Promise"--When in Rome
"Shake Your Head"--Was (Not Was) feat. Ozzy Osbourne & Kim Basinger
    "Blue Vibe"--Tony Remy
"Jerk Out"--The Time (for some reason, "Jungle Love" isn't on this thing! )
    "Your Wildest Dreams"--The Moody Blues
    "Undun"--The Guess Who
"Cupid/I've Loved You For A Long Time" and "Working My Way Back To You/Forgive Me, Girl"--The Spinners
    "Stomp"--The Brothers Johnson
    "Right On Track"--The Breakfast Club
    "Iko Iko"--Belle Stars
"And She Was", "Once In A Lifetime", "Burning Down The House", and "Wild Wild Life"--Talking Heads
    "Wishing Well"--Terence Trent D'arby

Thumpin' tracks, all. Was enjoying myself thoroughly.

Oh, and 4 am bass practice. All hail the Cafe Walter headphone amp!!!!

What am I listening to today? Yesterday?

Cricket. The 5th test. England vs Australia.

    Pat

PS It's not always about the music. :P  I can't believe I just said that.

Re: The Perennial Favourite: What Are You Listening To Today?

    sasred - 07.01.2007, 04:31

    Shame on you, Pat.

Yesterday...the new SR single!! Is...good, prefer "All Down The Line" and "Lady" though.

And today...howled with laughter, had my first ever listen to Justin Timberlake's "Sexy Back"...and my brother had it of all people. Never expected HIM to OWN a copy of that!!!!!

But hey, in some ways, my little bro is even more open-minded than I am about music.

He listens to country. I can't claim that. *goes and finds a sick bag*

Re: The Perennial Favourite: What Are You Listening To Today?

    redorro - 07.01.2007, 07:09

Well, I'm not listening to test cricket anymore. I think we won 5/5 tests. :P :P :P What, first time in 85 years we done a whitewash for the Ashes. Hey, but not as much fun as two teams who are evenly matched. :) Makes for more friendly banter in the kitchen at work. :P

Anyway, to day it is Robert Johnson, Simply Red (wonder what activity made me put them on? ) and a little lounge music. Fun-ky! After all, is it Sunday and I need relaxation. 8)

Pat (who now waits for the 'one-day' matches)

Well firstly, Redorro, what can i say? I'm not a cricket fan and it's a good job really, well and truely battered we were. Well done the Aussies! I shall return to you guys on the music later but i have to fly, all my neighbours are all dressed up and gone out and i'm still in my robe.

    Ooh Pat,
That was a little below the belt :).. I don't care much for cricket or many other professional sports these day as they are played by too many over paid prima donnas who earn more in a week than i could earn in .... years.. im not bitter !!

    Anyway i digress :)

I have twin boys who are almost 18 and are very much into their music so much so that i hardly get a look in at the pc as they are busy downloading the latest stuff. I started them off witha few SR concerts so they could get the feel of a great vibe and they loved it (now they have sadly outgrown it) although they did come with me to Blickling hall last summer and loved it (of course)
Mick and the band don't seem to have the same pull as Pink, Kelly Clarkson and the Scissor Sisters to name but a few. They are off to see Nelly Futado, Mika and The Feeling in the next couple of months and guess what "mum's! not allowed to go :(

I have to say i love Scissor sisters their music has a real feel good feeling about it and Pressure zone has some funky sounds

    Love Sue

    Jamiroquai, A Funk Odyssey
Opaz feat. Ray Hayden, Back From The Raggedy Edge

    Sade, Love Deluxe

Had some Soul II Soul in earlier. I was just a couple of days off seeing them in London this last summer; wish I could have gone!!! Haven't seen an album drop from Jazzie B in ages...'Time For Change' was too good to be import-only...

Played some SR too. Blue and Simplified.

    Listening to.....
Glad to see this topic in here! Thanks Shannon for adding it!!!

Well I have such a huge CD collection that I could play a different CD everyday & it would take at least 3 years to hear them all! I love music! Favs are 80's, New Wave, Techno, Rock, Smooth Jazz, Big Band and many more! Even disco! Hell it doesn’t really matter what type of genre it is, if it sounds good, I’ll love it!!!

Music is Life!!! Can’t love without it! And I’d say my biggest influence with music was my parents. In the 70’s the bought tons of albums & they would play them all the time. The Eagles, Bread, The Bee Gees, The Commodores, Elton John, Billy Joel, Rod Stewart and many more! My Mom loved a lot of the stuff I liked in the 80’s especially Simply Red! Back then we would go crazy when we saw any SR videos on TV & played their albums all the time (still do). So I feel that with their influence, they made me love Music. Today I love it because helps me unwind down a stressful day and uplifts me when I’m in a bad mood! Pure joy!!!!!

OK with all that said, I’m currently listening to the self-titled debut CD for a new band based out of LA called “Under the Influence of Giants”! Discovered them on myspace! Most of the songs on the CD are really good! Their sound is a blend of POP, ROCK & R&B. It’s Cool, Hip & Funky!!! Check them out at http://www.myspace.com/thegiants & http://www.islandrecords.com/utiog/

You may regret saying that !!!!! No not really, think the members here already have set a good example of what a forum should be like. As for what I am listening to.....well today it was the good old radio as I was having a sort out. I had been meaning to put all my CDs together for a while and today I did it........forgot what a collection I had so I aim to get some new tracks on my Ipod, when I say new I mean old songs that have not managed to find their way to my to my lovely little gadget !!! I seem to have a real mixture and I look forward to hearing some of the ones I forgot I owned.

    Love Em xx

    Today, I'm listening to...........

Just fell over the Long Way To The Top, concert on telly. So caught up with some golden oldies. Tamum Shud, Chain, Axiom, Max Merritt & The Meteors, John Paul Young, Kevin Borich, Stevie Wright (Easybeats), The Twilights and danced around the room with The Masters Apprentices, Turn Up Your Radio. There's no keeping this rock chic down when a good rock song comes on. 8)

They'll be hearing rock songs from the 70's at my funeral rather than hymns, I'm sure.

Listening to...mixed bag today. Sade, Marcus Miller, John Mellencamp, an 80's compilation.

Love "Rush Over" by Marcus--Me'shell Ndege'ocello on vocals. HOT!!!

Recent CD's (sitting in a pile on my turntable)--Duran Duran; Snake Davis; Sasha; Emerson, Lake, and Palmer; Angelique Kidjo; Vibraphonic; Izit; Crowded House; The Guess Who; Elton John. Plenty others.

    Listening to..........
I’ve been listening to some good old 80's tunes on XM Radio today. If you have an AIM (AOL Instant Messaging) Account, you can listen XM Radio on-line via AIM without having a XM Radio Account. You'll get the occasional commercial but the sound that comes through is very clear & the selection is great! I’m thinking of actually getting an XM Radio Receiver soon. Their New Wave station I'm listening to is AWESOME!!

Just heard these cool songs over the past hour!

Change & Mad World.....Tears for Fears
Lay Your Hands on Me.....Thompson Twins
    Heartbreak Beat…..Psychedelic Furs
    I Started Something…..The Smiths
    Love Action….Human League
    Erasure…..Ship of Fools
    Beat Box…..Art of Noise

Did you hear Crowded House are looking at reforming for a concert in the US? Possibly a 'one off'. However, it isn't yet official that they are reforming.

And how will they do it without the lovely incredibly funny Paul Hester.

That's sacrilege, that is...it won't be the same!!!!! Paul added so much...

It'll probably trip my trigger as much as INXS sans Michael Hutchence. Not denying the talent of the Farriss brothers, and Gary Garry Beers...but...a presence like Michael gone, you just sense the hole.

    *sigh*

What I've been listening to...WNUA Smooth Jazz in Chicago to see if they play the new SR single. No dice so far. But I do like their programming and the commercial breaks are thankfully kept to a dull roar.

Didn't know you were into INXS as well! Man, ya learn things 'bout your friends every day. Michael was HOT, wasn't he? Loved his voice, and he was one heck of a performer.

Yeah, I love/d INXS too. I went to Michael's funeral in Sydney. It was just what I needed to help with the grief.

I can see the Farriss brothers still have a lot of creativity in the bellies, hence the many attempts to find a new front man. However, I think the current Canadian is doing a great job. Although I don't know how long for. No, he hasn't replaced Micheal. No one will.

There has been talk from some Australian critics, that maybe after this current (12+ months old) album might be the 'final' one for INXS as we know them.

I'm currently glued to Dark Side Of The Moon. Reason? See my posting in Other Stuff.

Yesterday, had a Led Zeppelin run. Also some Kenny Loggins..."Whenever I Call You Friend" with Stevie Nicks is one of my all-time favorite songs, that arrangement is just spot-on. It moves and breathes in all the right places.

Today...mellow R&B stuff to chill me out as our students have their annual formal tonight...will be very busy.

Well I have to say my stereo is acting a bit strange lately. The CD's keeps skipping but I think the CD player is way to dusty so I've got to clean it. And now that my drive to work is less than 15 minutes (I used to have a 45 minute drive) I don’t listen to my CDs in the car anymore. I've been a bad music fan lately!!!!

Oh well I’m in a smooth jazz grove today!!! Been listening to Brian Culbertson! He’s a piano & trombone player and simply one of the best Smooth Jazz guys around!!! His groves are so cool!!!!!

    Had a funny one today...
Been listening to my '50's and '60's folder on my computer, which has a subwoofer on the sound system. And I play it at a pretty good volume.

I also own these throw pillows that have little voice boxes in them that make this "boiiiiing" springing sound.

    The two converged.

Ben E. King's "Stand By Me". During the chorus, the convergence of one particular bass note and something else (percussion? keyboard?) kept causing the one pillow to make its noise!!!!!!

    "Oh won't you stand...by me...BOOOIINNNNNGG!!!"

Had me cracking up the whole time!!! I'm gonna see if I can set it off with my bass later...

    Listening to......
Well I've been on a kick for The Smiths lately. I haven't listened to their stuff for years and I recently just pulled out their CD's & started up again. I really like them in the 80's but I listened to them so much I got a bit sick of Morrissey's voice! Nothing beats "How soon is now?" One of the best musical writing partnerships ever with Morrissey & Marr. Too bad it all fell apart. But hey that's how life goes! :?

I always liked this song too but I read somewhere one time that he grew to hate that song for a while since most people only know him for that song & nothing else. He's a very good singer/song writer & it's a shame his albums after that one never took off big. There are some good songs on his albums he made after the Sailing Smash Hit! But hey that's American Radio/Music Machine---you’re only a darling for a short time then they cut you off and people end up wondering what happened to you even though you still make music. :?

Well, i've been listening to my own material over and over for weeks now. Criticising and pulling it apart, but hey.
The latest thing i heard that drew my attention was Jay Z and Beyonce, Hollywood. Like that track, it's all about a groove with me. But all the artists you've spoken about are in my collection or i pod somewhere, from Bread to Frankie Beverly and Maze ( Joy and Pain ), Michael Macdonald, The Carpenters(voice of an angel), Aretha Franklin i love, Bobby Valentino and so it goes on.

Impressive List of Musicians you like to listen too John. Some are my favorites too! In particular Maze! I love Joy & Pain. It's a real classic & I 'm also fond of Count Basic's remake of it a few years back...a bit more smooth jazzy sounding but good! Ah Frankie Beverly....another fine musician from Philly! And I Love Bread too...my parents played them all the time in the 70's!

OK I'm listening to New Wave 80's Music again today! What can say I just love it! So far been listening to Joy Division, The Cure & Psychedelic Furs. AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!
