Michael Sadler's Ongoing Saga

Younger music fans can be forgiven if they've never heard of Saga. And those who spent their formative years listening to the early '80s hits "On The Loose" and "Wind Him Up" might be surprised that the band still exist.
But still exist they do, and thrive even, in certain markets in Europe and Scandinavia. Their newest release is The Chapters Live, a double-CD performance of their weird sci-fi epic about aliens bringing Einstein back to life in order to save the earth. Weirder still, The Chapters couldn't have been performed in full until recently because the individual songs were released out of sequence, spread over seven albums and 26 years.
Saga lead singer Michael Sadler explains that this idiosyncratic method of releasing the songs was initially a bit of a joke for the band. "There were only going to be eight Chapters originally, so if we did two Chapters per album it would guarantee that our career would last at least four albums."
In hindsight, releasing the songs in this manner resulted in a fascinating puzzle for fans who spent untold amounts of time trying to figure out the storyline. With the live album, the songs can finally be heard in proper order.
Saga's next project also involves a live concert, in this case a DVD of the band performing their 1981 Worlds Apart album. "The record company thought it would be good to re-release Worlds Apart to introduce new fans to the band," explains Sadler.
"We thought instead to do it in a live format. That way you have something new for the older fans and it also educates the younger listeners."
Not surprisingly, the DVD will be recorded in Germany, a Saga stronghold from the very beginning. "In Toronto they had a radio poll," recalls Sadler, "where people phoned in to vote for their favourite Canadian band. Someone called in and wanted to nominate Saga and the DJ said, 'Well I love that band, too, but this is for your favourite Canadian band and they're from Germany.'"
Apparently Saga had been focusing so much on their strong German market that their Canadian roots were being forgotten. But Sadler intends to rectify Saga's longstanding neglect of North America. "We have made a pledge to ourselves and to the North American fans that 2006 will see us doing a lot of shows in Canada and the U.S.," he says.
In between Saga albums and tours, Sadler had also been slowly crafting a solo album called Clear, which he quietly released last year. In contrast to the character studies of Saga albums, the songs on Clear come from a much more personal perspective. Most were written during a period where Sadler was struggling with alcohol abuse and he was somewhat surprised at how revealing some of the lyrics were about his state of mind at the time. "I was drawing on things that happened to me, although I didn't realize I was writing about it at the time," he acknowledges.
"It was very strange reading the lyrics and realizing that I was under the influence at the time. The songs weren't meant to be autobiographical and they aren't specifically about what I was going through, but I could see that I was a little bit disturbed. Something was bothering me."
The title track, the only one written after his rehab, is the most obviously autobiographical. Sadler sings about a sense of rejuvenation and optimism as he moves into a sober future. "I went through something and came out the other end a bit the more wise for it," he offers.
"I learned some things about myself and feel much better because of it. I feel more alert and more alive than I have since I can remember. I feel better now physically and mentally than I did when I was 30 or 35 years old."

Hey ihr Saga-Fans ;-)
Nachdem ihr nun von Michaels Alkohol-Problemen wisst...und das dieses Thema Einfluss auf 'Clear' genommen hat...klingt die Platte nun für euch "anders"?
Bei mir war es z.B. so mit dem Zep-Song 'All My Love'. Nach dem ich gehört hatte, dass er auch was mit dem Tod von Roberts Sohn zu tun hat...veränderte sich der Song für mich...von vorher: "Zu leichte Pop-Kost"...zu "sehr bewegend" ;-)
Ging es euch auch ähnlich?

Also,als ich die Scheibe das erste Mal gehört habe,bekam ich bei vielen Songs die berühmte " Gänsehaut".Ein gutes Zeichen bei mir,daß heißt,die Songs sind schön,gehen unter die Haut.Dann fand ich auf Saga-Germany die deutsche Übersetzung und wunderte mich über die Texte,einige verstand ich nicht.Aber nach dem ich das gerade so gelesen habe,verstehe ich jetzt einiges besser.Ich finde es hat schon sehr viel mit Rückrad zu tun,wenn man seine Probleme in Texte verfasst und sie veröffentlicht.Der Mann hat sich zu seinen Problemen bekannt und sich ihnen gestellt.
Aufgeben ist einfach,dagegen kämpfen nicht.
Ach ja:Alles gute zum Nitrolaus!

Ja, das finde ich auch, Ändy.
Da gehört viel Mut zu...und viel Aufrichtigkeit, um nicht Gefahr zu laufen, das ganze Thema zu kommerzialisieren. Das machen ja so manche "Künstler"...outen sich als 'werweisswas'...nur um die neue Platte besser zu verkaufen.
Das ist bei Michael nicht der Fall. Das ist sowieso etwas, was mir an Saga gut gefällt (neben der Musik)...dass sie immer authentisch sind. Vermutlich hätten sie heute etwas bekannter sein können...oder ein paar Platten mehr verkaufen können, wenn sie den Medienrummel mitmachen würden. Oder wenn sie bei ihrer Musik danach schielen würden, was gerade "in" ist...aber sie haben sich nie verbiegen lassen.
Hut ab vor Saga! ;-(
PS: Ich hoffe, ihr wart alle brav...der Nikolaus kommt... ;-)

Sagen wir es mal so. Nun wird mir klar warum diese Platte so voller Gefühl, Schmerz, und Stärke ist. So hatte ich sie von Anfang an empfunden und ich bin stolz auf Michael.
Mich wundert dass die Fans in den Foren gar nicht über Michaels Problem reden.
Michael hat es erzählt, es war kein outing sondern er hat es einfach erzählt. Also kein Drama darum gemacht.
Er hat es auch nicht zeitgleich mit der Veröffentlichung erzählt. Und auch nicht in jedem Interview dass über Clear handelte.
Kein Statement auf seiner HP oder sonst was.
Nun wissen es die Fans aber niemand redet jetzt sensationslustig darüber.
Ich glaube jeder denkt sich seinen Teil dazu.
Also ich muss schon sehr artig gewesen sein.
Denn der Nikolaus brachte mir heute die neue SAGA cd Chapters live.
Ein wundervolle Scheibe...wie gesagt live und tolle Versionen die man so noch nie hörte....
Zu jedem Chapter eine liebevoll angefertigte Schwarz-Weiss Zeichnung.

Aber, ich muss es einfach erzählen, der Nikolaus kam nicht so ganz uneigenützig um die Ecke...Denn als ich seelig im Wohnzimmer sass und den Chapters mein Ohr lieh, kam der Nikolaus mit einer
niegelnagelneuen "traumgitarre" wie er es nennt rein.
Sie ist feuerrot und angeblich DIE GITARRE... :roll:

Habe meine Chapters endlich ( nach 2 Wochen warten) am Samstag auch bekommen.Wirklich aufwendig gestaltet.Und gestern Abend habe ich mein erstes Saga T-Shirt selbst gemacht.Ist gar nicht schlecht geworden,außer daß das S ein wenig verlaufen ist....
