21 Questions for the 21st Century
    featuring Dir en Grey

    1. The thing you liked most in your whole life.
Kyo - Live (gig), because it is such great fun.

Die - Dir en Grey of course.

    Kaoru - me

    Tot - Live

Shinya - Guessing riddles. I love to read books that can train my brain.

    2. Dir en Grey has been in the major scene for 2 years already. Looking back, what changes have there been, both in you and in the band?
Kyo - I think the band is maturing subconsciously, but since I cannot view from a objective point, I cannot say for sure. As for myself, I hate myself for being frailer and frailer.

Die - Compared to the indies period, I gained so much more within these two years. Aside from meeting various people, I learnt a lot too, and I am using my brains a great deal more.

Kao - I become stronger. No matter what happens, I won't fret, and tackle it steadily.

Tot - I don't know what changes I have undergone. I guess there has not been much! As for the band, the desire to perform has increased. Formerly we gave the audience a strong feeling of reserve. Now, we are still shy, but we have opened up simultaneously.

Shin - I don't know for either aspect.

    3. Please state your three most precious things.
Kyo - 1) Dir en Grey; 2) my voice; 3) my 800-1000 CDs at home

Die - 1) Dir en Grey; 2) fans; 3) staff

    Kao - 1) Dir en Grey; 2) my hair; 3) hide-sama's signature

Tot - 1) My past; 2) everyone I've met; 3) this very moment

Shin - 1) My dog; 2) my parents' dog; 3) Dir en Grey

    4. April is the season of sakura. Please tell us the most memorable experience of sakura(kirschblüten)-watching, or tell us a sakura-related memory.
Kyo - There was a park near my home in my primary school days. I once picked a sakura flower from that park and brought it home. It was an immoral thing to do, but that time my maternal grandma was in it with me together.

Die - I remember when I just graduated from junior high and was to start senior high, I was so anxious that I didn't even know if the sakura has bloomed or not. (laughs)

Kao - When filming for "Jealous" pv, we went to (?) especially for picking the sakura. That day was rainy, and the whole ground was carpeted with rain-washed petals. It was breathtaking.

Tot - I arrived here at Tokyo around 4 years ago, to join bands. I rode the tram alone on that day. From the vehicle I could see the sakura trees on either side of the road, all in full bloom. It was picturesque. Besides, the feeling of being alone on the road was hard to forget. I remember that was just prior to joining Dir en Grey.

Shin - When I just got ready for sakura-watching this year, I discovered that all sakura have finished blooming. It was a sad memory.

    5. Dir en Grey has five members. Excluding yourself, what do you want to say to your band members?
    Kyo - Minna-san work hard.

Die - Kyo, please don't pierce any more holes!
    Kaoru, get a haircut!
Toshiya, please fix your room. (see totchi's answer to Q13)
Shinya, for how long do you intend to hide yourself?

Kao - I got so much to say!
Kyo, you have lent so many things to me, such as games. I will return them to you
    next time.
I don't think you even know about me borrowing some of them!
Die, you also cut your hair. Now it's only me left. I must persist!
Toshiya, I will return the LD amines you lent me very soon.
    Shinya, you sure are manly!

Tot - Kyo, you have to be the poisonous person forever. (?)
    Kaoru, play faster! (laughs)
Die, why don't you go play a Light Band. (laughs)
Shinya, please count "one, two, three" louder before you start drumming away!

    Shinya - Kyo, don't catch a cold.
Die, don't let others beat you up.
    Kaoru, please be gentler.
    Toshiya, don't be nosy.

    6. What is your memory of first studying in a primary school, at the age of six?
Kyo - When I first went to primary school, there were no friends from kindergarten with me, so I was alone. My home was on the border of the school district, that's why I was allocated to a primary school different from theirs. I didn't like going to school then. As for what kind of student I was? Not quite different from what I am now: an obstinate, difficult student.

Die - After attending the welcoming ceremony, I bought some candies on my way home. I had very long hair at that time . It was long and black, making me seemed like a shy boy. I would turn red by just standing in front of the altar. I didn't like to talk much either, so the teachers always write, "need to speak up more" or "have to make more friends actively" in my handbook.

Kao - I don't quite remember, I can only recall that it was a broken wooden building. On the contrary my kindergarten is a lot prettier. There was a pair of stone sculptures, a man and a woman, in the court of my primary school. I heard that they walked around at night, it was scary! I enrolled in another school when I reached primary 2. I was very stupid as a primary school student, but I was not much different from the average child. I always run around during recess.

Tot - I have all my hair shaven for the first time in my life. I hated it and thought I looked ugly, though it was really convenient to wash my hair. When I was young, I was reserved but lively at the same time. Basically not much different from what I am now. Although I'm reserved, I liked to attract attention; but sometimes I could be very shy too. Oh! And each time I fought with the bully and lost, I would always escape.

Shinya - My class number is 12. On the first day of school, my class teacher took a roll call. He calls out a class number, the corresponding student raises his hand. Somehow he called out number twelve after number 15. I was confused so I didn't budge. Then he got angry and said, "I have already called out twice!" In response, I quickly rose my hand. He asked, "You are number 15?" "Number 12-" I was immediately hit on the head. That teacher was really brutal. It is a painful memory! When I was in primary school I was very short, and I always talk with other classmates, I was so different then. I started to hate talking at around grade 2 in junior high...

    7. A recent lucky thing?
Kyo - No. I don't even feel a tiny bit of luckiness these days.

Die - ... (thought for 5 min)... None...

Kao - My home is surprisingly warm. When I turn on all the electrical appliances at home, I feel truly warm. But I think I need to restrict myself a bit. (laughs)

Tot - I don't feel lucky recently; on the contrary loads of unlucky things happening instead... (see Q 13)

Shin - Recently? Should be none.

    8. The most blissful moment in the day is?
Kyo - Well... I don't think there is one. In the past I slept a lot. When I wake up lying in bed and then drift back to sleep again I would already feel contented. However I now sleep less, and I lost that feeling. I put no effort in fine dining, so I don't feel blessed with eating either.

Die - I have frequent nightmares recently, so each night before I sleep, I will tell myself, "I am going to sleep now; whatever happens after, however terrifying, will only be nightmares." Therefore I think the moment before I sleep should be my most blissful moment.

Kao - Listening to my stuff loudly in the studio, after I finished recording for the remix.

Tot - When I eat or sleep.

Shin - When I return home. Miyu barks welcome happily, and I will say to her, "I'm back!" The best is sleeping in bed with her.

    9. A recent thing that makes you suffer?
Kyo - Every day. Earlier on my ear has problems, but now I feel even worse. I don't know how to put it exactly, but it is like, suddenly I will feel the world is so grey; it is better when I am with the other members, but when I go back home alone, I feel really depressed.

Die - Nightmares naturally. In my dreams I was running for life with friends, my friends would ran speedily, but I would be sluggish like I have eaten some lard! That feeling is very tormenting and terrifying.

Kao - Answering this question, because I don't know how.

Tot - I have very regular lifestyle these days: going to bed at around midnight and getting up at eight. I even went back to live with my parents for a week during the break, leading a healthy normal lifestyle. Unfortunately we are getting busy again now, so I have to work and not return home until late at night. Once it is midnight, I start to get really drowsy. Healthy regular lifestyle makes me feel that I am in good condition, I don't want to go back to abnormal lifestyle...

Shin - None... maybe swim till I drop... or when doing gym... especially when using the chest and triceps muscle developer. One set consists of ten times; when I reach the middle of set 3 I'll feel I've reached my limit.

    10. Any thing that you restrict yourself from doing?
Kyo - Not after I grew up. Isn't there a series called "Old Man" on TV recently? I completely understand the feeling of (?) Tamura's role. Every time I watch the show, it seems I am watching myself, that role resembles me a lot. I don't usually watch TV, but I even taped this one down. At first I saw the series' preview and thought it was okay, so I watched the first show. Unexpectedly the more I watched the more I sense the similarity. My dad feels the same way too. I liked this kind of personality: for example (in the past) when I went out to eat and met noisy children at the restaurant, I would pay particular attention to them. So now that I've grown up, I will always say to myself, "children are like this, let them be!" I wanted to keep this kind of compassion alight too.

    Die - Betray someone.

Kao - Tarnishing Dir en Grey's ads.

Tot - Imitate people I like. Man enjoys being near to those he likes. No matter how hard one tries to mimic, the other person will always be someone else, you are still yourself. In contrast, you should just be you. This is the only correct way.

Shin - Tobacco, thinner, and drugs. To me, tobacco is just as bad as drugs. If one got addicted, he or she will never be healthy.

    11. Your favorite sport?
Kyo - I hate all kinds of sport. I think that it will be nice to have none. I don't like either doing or watching it. Every time there's a film on TV that I wanted to watch, and I set the time recorder to tape it down, the baseball will go overtime, I'm really angry! I don't know what's the fun with throwing the ball out. Baseball, English soccer, all kinds of sport are based on a ball. Keeping your eyes on the forever whirling ball makes one dizzy. Except for Live, I don't see how moving your body will bring happiness of any sort.

Die - I now wanted to play baseball. Although I am never serious on it, I remember playing baseball in summers and (English) soccer in winters in my elementary days. Playing soccer is nice too! I like Giants; when we were recording for MACABRE, I would watch the TV live transmission of baseball matches. I went to see some competitions, during the three-months' break, for two consecutive days too.

Kao - Baseball and soccer. I played both. Besides, I enjoy watching basketball, boxing and wrestling.

Tot - Any sports. I am an all-round athlete. However I don't like to watch that much; I'd rather participate than be a spectator. I wanted very much to play kimto (Japanese traditional fencing) at this moment. Kimto is great fun! It's cool, but at the same time it requires strict swordsmenship, and it is one of the national sports. Besides, soccer, baseball and basketball are all my past favorites. If I have time, I wanted to participate in some of the sports!

Shin - I hate watching sports. I like badminton. When we (band) go camping together, we played badminton too. (note: they went for a working camp for a week in mid 1999)

    12. There are 12 months per year. Which month do you like and why?
Kyo: I like the season of blooming sakura, so April is my fave month.

Die - The days prior to December 25th. Christmas carols are being played everywhere on the streets, and the atmosphere is incomparable. I hate the days in between Christmas and New Year, like, a year is nearly gone, but nothing much is done. Actually I don't like New Year, so the answer is December, but limited to only the days before 25th.

Kao - December. The streets are bustling with people around this time of the year.

Tot - None special. If I must choose, I'll choose winter.

Shin - February, because it's my birthday month. My happiness is not due to receiving B-day presents. B-days are important to me since I was a child. I always look forward to birthdays; even though I am adult now, I still do that.

13 The most unlucky thing recently?
Kyo: Naturally it will be the problem with my ear, and the delay of the tour.

Die - Drinking too much. I liked the taste of alcohol. Although I know I should not drink too much, but I still overdid it eventually, at the end I left my sunglasses in the bar as well

Kao - I tried to tidy up my home recently. I want to have it spotless. However there turned out to be a hole in the garbage bag, and the oil inside practically got all over the floor of my home. I've already finished cleaning, but I ended up in a mess.

Tot - I live on the first floor. That day somehow water seeped up from the floor. I rose to find my carpet totally wet. At first, I thought I spilled some juice on the carpet on the previous night, but no matter how hard I mopped it up, the water keep coming through. Then I realize it is something more serious than that, and I called up my landlord to handle it. Now all my wooden furniture is going all rotten and moldy, it's terrible even thinking of it. Oh I wanted to move out ASAP...

    Shin - None.

    14. Your motto of life?
Kyo: Not to lie to myself, and should be confident.

Die - Don't run away from things, make your own decisions, for your own self.

Kao - Don't blame the heavens. If fate wants you to have something, you will get it; if not, don't bear any grudges.

Tot - The most important thing is to have your own opinion. It's not a bad thing to listen to others, but you have to judge and decide for yourself.

Shin - Determination. No matter what you do, once you've made a decision, finish it completely.

    15. What is your impression on "moon"? What will you relate it to?
Kyo - Rocks. Although I am rather interested in UFO, I don't have any particular feelings for the moon. What meaning does it have for us to be able to land on the moon? If we can live on the moon, that's a different matter altogether...

Die - Somewhere far away from Earth, somewhere that I won't be able to reach in this life.

Kao - It makes me think of the Earth. I should be able to see the whole of Earth from the moon, it is the place that I live.

Tot - Unimaginable. Mysterious. The moon is beautiful superficially, however it has its cold and secretive face.

Shin - Rabbit. (mito: according to ancient belief, there was a rabbit living in the moon)

    16. What is the harshest thing about joining a band?
Kyo - All the waiting during photo sessions and filming of pvs. We did four to five sessions per day, and that was completely hell.

Die - Any work other than the band, such as communicating with our manager. Anything unrelated to music.

Kao - Writing comments for magazines and "a knot" newsletter. I need to spend a lot of time writing up things, even a single word is a torture to me.

Tot - In the past the harshest thing was transporting instruments; now it is on how to differentiate Toshiya in the band from the normal Toshiya.

Shin - Not having enough sleep. The harshest thing is to go for a photo session immediately in the morning, right after we recorded through the night. Basically I can't go without sleep; I need on average 10 hours of sleep each night, and during holidays I can even sleep with my little dog for up to 12 hours!

    17. When you were 17 what dreams do you have about your future?
Kyo - Now. So I'm rather successful! (laughs) Ever since I was in elementary school, the only career I wanted is to join a band. "Join a band, go major" is my first dream. It was a coincidence that we were approaching this dream smoothly when I'm 17.

Die - I thought I would enter university, then lead some simple normal life like any other white collar: work, get married, and live on. I never imagined joining a band.

Kao - Myself on stage. I already envisioned myself forming a band and playing guitar, but I never went into details. My imagination stopped at seeing myself standing in the spotlight on the stage.

Tot - Nothing special. I never dreamt of joining a band.

Shin - Being in a band, just like now. When I was 17, I think I was already a member of the pre-Dir en Grey band.

    18. Is there something that you are confident of not losing to anyone else?
Kyo - I have big confidence in myself, but I never thought of winning anybody, so there is nothing that I won't lose to someone.

Die - Drinking. Each time I go drinking, I will be reluctant to return home. I don't think anyone can beat me to that. Although I could remember absolutely nothing afterwards, I know that each time I got drunk I would babble away, and refuse to leave. During the break, I could drink from 2am till 8am. I won't leave even when all my friends were complaining to go. And I drink rapidly, as if the alcohol is water.

Kao - Talking someone into something/cheat people (laughs). For example, when our manager tries to request us to do things, I will use my superb coaxing skills to make him surrender.

Tot - I don't like to judge everything by winning or losing. Instead I think the most important thing is whether others agree to what you've done.

Shin - Maybe solving riddles. I like to use my brains for thinking, though I might not be able to answer quickly. But I'm still a bit faster than the average person. For example, how can you divide an irregular cage into two equal halves and put a lion and tiger into each respectively? Do you know the answer? It is to divide the cage horizontally into two, this way both halves will have the same amount of space. I like this sort of questions that require thinking. I have twenty-something this kind of riddle books!

    19. When did you feel you have grown up?
Kyo - When I was furious. Actually I don't like to see me like that. In the past, I was easily agitated by trivial things. About three years ago my dad told me, "You've changed to more subtle; even your eyes looked gentler." I was shocked. I still liked the way I was.

Die - When I learnt how to drink with my younger brother. In my younger days, I always consider myself to have grown-up once I learnt how to drink.

Kao - When I played baseball in senior high with students from lower grades.

Tot - When I start to get muscle pains and shoulder aches. I never had these kinds of problems during my teens; ever since I joined Dir en Grey my body ages (laughs). Although my body is mature, I still feel like a teenager inside. Maybe I'll have to wait until I give out lucky money (in chinese, red packet) to feel grown up.

Shin - I never thought about it... probably after I become a dad...

    20. How have you changed from when you are 20?
Kyo - I don't think I have changed much! I don't like regulations or fixed things. I didn't even attended the "turning adult" ceremony.

Die - When I was 20, I told myself, "I am not a teenager anymore." I treat myself as a forty, fifty years old person. But now I hope I could be a bit younger.

Kao - Nil. I did nothing at twenty, believe me. I didn't attend the "turning adult" ceremony; neither did I worked for part-time jobs. I only live on without aim. So I was not much different from what I am now.

Tot - I don't feel there are any big difference. I attended the "turning adult" ceremony.

Shin - There aren't anything particular on my special day. I did turn in for the ceremony; that was a harsh day! We were doing a Oneman show (ie, featuring only them) before the ceremony. It was snowing ultra heavily. I didn't even sleep after the show, and booked the earliest flight back home; but I overslept en route to the airport! I planned to fly to (?) airport which is nearest to the place where the ceremony would be held. However nearly all the flights were cancelled due to the snow, so I changed plans to fly to Kansai airport instead, which is a bit further comparatively. When I finally arrived, it was nearly dusk, and the ceremony was delayed due to this. Afterwards I hang out with friends for a drink and karaoke. Since I haven't eaten or slept properly all along, I was totally exhausted. I don't have the faintest idea on what happened next. I only recall waking up at my parents' home the following morning, brought there by my friends. I also remember feeling terrible at waking, that was the first time I drank till I threw up. That day we had a Event at ?? so I had to get up and start from Osaka by train. Just when I thought I could some rest on the train, you know what happened? The train was cancelled due to the snow! I was forced to go to Tokyo first before returning back to ?? It is the most unfortunate day of my life!

    21. What expectations do you have for yourself and for the band in the coming 21st century?
Kyo - I can't imagine. I can only think of things at present. What lies ahead is out of my imagination. I hate it even more when I need to plan for the future. I just want to work on happily. That's enough for me.

Die - Although it's the 21st century, I still have to work. There is not much difference from the past.

Kao - Tour. I'm too realistic! (laughs) I am also hoping for some real big challenges that I've never experienced. The road ahead should absolutely not be smooth and straight. It is not only with Kyo's problem; it is the same with the album production. To sum up, the more challenges the better; whatever happens, I will face it courageously.

Tot - In the ever-changing times, could we continue to bring out our own style? We don't want to abide to the current trend; we only want to cherish the things we did in the past and now.

    Shin - I dunno...
