    Christmas
Time really flies. It is time for Christmas again soon. How are you going to celebrate it?
I do not know if I will be in mood to celebrate it at all this year.
Here in Sweden we eat alot on Christmas eve. Like:ham, potatoes,
ribs, almost all kind of fish,bread....well as I said it is A LOT of food.
Every Christmas eve channel 1 airs Donald Duck. That is a tradition here in Sweden.

How do I celebrate Christmas! Um on Christmas Day! We have our dinner, then presents....watch some football games....visit with family and friends.

Actually celebrating Christmas starts the first of Dec. All the parties, and get-togethers, forget the diets.....go back on one after New Years.....

I wish we all could spend the holiday together - that would be wonderful.

yes, that would be wonderful and itīs one of my dreams I want to make come true:

I really would love to spent Christmas with my friends ... you know in our family itīs like that you HAVE to spent time with your family - you are not allowed to see your friends. Ainīt this crazy? I mean we all do live in the same small city - my parents upstairs (in the same house), my sister and her family around the corner (also my grandma), only my brother is living a 2 hours drive away and we donīt see him that often ... my ex-husbands family is living here as well - so we all do see each other almost every day !!! Here in Germany we have 3 days to celebrate Christmas. The 24th is the most important day and we HAVE to go to church (but I donīt !!! only this year, because my daughter wanted to take part at the theatre play for Christmas), then the family usually eats together and then there are still the gifts :) ... then the family marathon starts ... lol ... 25th and 26th you usually are "travelling" - I hate it, because I always totally stressed out because of all this running from one place to the other and most of the times we start fighting, because everyone is stressed somehow. This is not Christmas for me ... I already told you how I celebrate Christmas with my kids and Iīm really looking forward to spending time together with my kids - they gonna spend the 26th with their dad and stay with him until New Yearīs - so I will have some time to relax and meet up with friends - whatever

Wow 3 whole days - that is wonderful - we use to go to the ex's on Christmas Eve then ours Christmas Day and then mom's in the afternoon but now we celebrate on Christmas day and then Keri goes to her other grandparents then to her dads and spends the night with them.

there is nothing wonderful about being surrounded by your stressed out family for 3 days !!! I remember that my parents always had a real bad fight on Christmas and we kids were hiding in our rooms ... ho ho ho ... I remember one time when we all still were living at my parents house and my parents were fighting again, I had like 3 bottles of champagne in my room for New Yearīs and we started drinking them. We got real drunk and played a game (canīt remember what it was) and had lots of fun !!! So, I still dream of the perfect Christmas somehow, but I think Iīm doing a pretty good job how I celebrate it with my kids ...

Oh Anne, I hate that you had to go through that. My ex's family was bad about fighting. I was just thinking 3 days of celebrating Christmas.

Oh I did manage to find my collection of around the world santas the other day. Wasn't Germany's "Father Christmas" - I wish I had all the different stories of each countries Santas. I know we have Santa Clause in the the US, and then there is Kris Kringle, Father Noel, what are the others.

Germany has "Christkind" to come on Christmas - is kind of an angel ... at December 5th Nikolaus is coming to the kids to bring little gifts and he looks lots alike your Santa ... Nikolaus was a bishop living back in ???? Idril, can you help me with that? - anyways, as we all know did Santa get his look from Coca Cola and I love it ... I have an old book with old German Christmas stories and there are also alot of old pictures ... there was actually no red coat and red pants - lol - Nikolaus was wearing kind of green clothes, but I guess that always depends on the time area the pictures are drawn ... together with Nikolaus "Knecht Ruprecht" is coming to punish those who didnīt obey ... damn, I was afraid of this black creature when I was a kid !!! You donīt see him around anymore, itīs just Nikolaus in our days ...you guys also donīt celebrate "Advent" - we burn down 4 candles till Christmas. Every Sunday till Christmas the family usually came together and sang songs and stuff ... today we just burn the candle and thatīs it ... so the last Sunday before Christmas we have four candles burning ... I remember at school we had to stand up every morning during this time and pray and sing a song ... I liked it ... everyone had a candle burning on his desk and we turned out the lights and then we had just the candles and it was still dark early in the morning ... so it had a special atmosphere ... I donīt think they are doing this anymore.

We celebrate "advent" here in Sweden too. We have first "advent" on Sunday. It is really beautiful with the candles. To get some light in the dark. We do not sing songs.

We celebrate the Advent Candle lighting.

I love the meaning of "Christkind" that sounds so much more meaningful that Santa - if that makes sense. I love reading and listening to stores of other lands and their beliefs and legends. Thanks for sharing that with me.

Here in Sweden we celebrate something that we call "Saint Lucia".
It is on the 13 Dec. We have "Lucia trains" in every schools. All young girls want to be "Saint Lucia" and the boys Santa Clause or the "Ginger Bread Man". They are soooo cute.

I'll be celebrating it in the sweltering heat with family, as usual.

I bet you guys can't imagine going to the beach on Christmas Day *lol* It's a bit of a tradition in Oz. It still seems weird to think that we have Christmas in the summertime, despite the fact that I've lived here all my life!

you are right I can't imagine it. Wish is was warmer here though - they are calling for the white stuff towards the end of the week....they are not expecting much but just to see it flying around - well it is something.

Believe me, I can. I grew up in such countries as Saudi-Arabia, Iran and Nigeria - there is no snow at all! We didnīt even have a christmas tree !!! I remember that I missed the snow that much - because at that time we still used to have snow for christmas in Germany - today we wish it would snow at least a bit around christmas, but there is just rain and a frustrating grey sky ... who knows, maybe this year ...

    Re: Christmas

Was it like 5 years ago when we had all that snow for Christmas? I remember I was still happily married (LOOOOOOOOOOL - was I?) and we decided to run away from all this christmas crazyness, so we booked a journey to Disneyland Paris!!! It started snowing a few days before christmas and I was almost about to say that I wonīt go to Paris. My ex tried to calm me down and told me that it will stop snowing soon - but it kept on snowing really hard ... so we left a wonderful winter wonderland and there was no snow in Paris !!! When we came back home after christmas there was still snow and everybody told us that they had a wonderful christmas because they wasnīt even able to drive !!! Awwwww - I started crying right away - after all these years I had the chance for a white christmas and I had to go to Paris! Since then I refuse to think about leaving home for christmas - lol - I will stay here and I will wait until it starts snowing again !!! Maybe this year we gonna have a white christmas ...

Believe this one does fit perfect to me :

"Iīm dreaming of a white Christmas
Just like the ones I used to know
    Where the treetops glisten,
    and children listen
To hear sleigh bells in the snow

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas
With every Christmas card I write
May your days be merry and bright
And may all your Christmases be white!"

Till the age of 16 I was living at so many different countries growing up in so many different cultures ... I hated it when I was a child, but now Iīm grateful for the chance to meet so many interesting people!

Of course, itīs because of the global warming that we have like 20 °C in November - too much rain and extremely hot days in summer and a way to warm winter ... Germany never had tornados years ago - now we need to be afraid of them ... so itīs pretty scary and when you see the fact that about 15 years ago we started to think about things like that and all the good we did in the past 15 years now starts to have a positive effect it scares me even more ...

You know, every time I see a natural disaster on the news like Hurricane Katrina or the Asian tsunamis I always think that nature is getting back at us for everything we have put her through. If anyone isn't worried about global warming after seeing things like that then they certainly should be!

    Re: Christmas

    newnativspirit - 01.12.2006, 16:45

The problem is you canīt teach the elder people! They canīt really understand ... just like my grandma ... sheīs shocked by the things she can see on TV, but she still lives her life the way she always used to do it. But what WE need to do is to teach our children !!! We are the ones to show them what needs to be changed and of course we will have to learn! The future of our kids depend on us. Itīs not easy to explain global warming to kids, but with a few "games" itīs pretty easy to make them see, that something isnīt going the right way and then you can teach them ... one of the topics of my upcoming workshops for kids. I already thought about some things ... do you guys know "Lars, the little Icebear" ?

    Re: Christmas

Okay ladies- I know you may get mad at me, but I have to voice my opinion on global warming. It's completely blown out of proportion. The earth has only warmed up 0.01 percent of a degree in the last 200 years. They didn't even track the weather until the 1800's- so that is the only data we have to compare it to. The earth naturally goes through cycles of heating and cooling. Why else would the earth have a molten core and solid mass on the surface? These are all just normal cycles that earth has to go through. Rome wasn't built in one day- and neither was the earth.
I do agree with recycling, tree hugging, etc. etc. because I am a mother earth lover. Why else would I plant a garden and raise my own food? We use energy saving lightbulbs, alternative heating sources, and still have a septic tank and well water. So I am doing my part to keep mother earth clean (yes, I even subscribe to the magazine Mother Earth News), but this global warming thing- I have a real problem with. I think it's the news media's way of scaring us so we take our minds off of other more important things- like protecting our neighbors and providing for our families.

    NIKOLAUS:

As a bishop, Nicholas, servant of God, was first and foremost a shepherd of the people, caring for their needs. His active pursuit of justice for his people was demonstrated when he secured grain in time of famine, saved the lives of three men wrongly condemned, and secured lower taxes for Myra. He taught the Gospel simply, so ordinary people understood, and he lived out his faith and devotion to God in helping the poor and all in need.

Children around the world know and love St. Nicholas-for he brings gifts and treats in December. He is known by different names—and even looks different from place to place. But, it is the same St. Nicholas who delights with small surprises and good things to eat. Nicholas gave in secret, alert to others' needs, and expecting nothing for himself in return. It is this selfless generosity which seeks only the good of the other that made Nicholas' gifts the gifts of a saint.

In Roman Catholic areas of southern Germany, such as Bavaria, Sankt Nikolaus still comes as a bishop with flowing beard and a bishop's miter and staff. Houses are thoroughly cleaned and children clean and polish their shoes or boots in preparation for the saint's visit. On the eve of Dec. 6th, children put letters to the good saint along with carrots or other food for his white horse or donkey on a plate or in their shoes. These are left outside, under the bed, beside a radiator, or on a windowsill in hopes of finding goodies from St. Nicholas the next morning. During the night Sankt Nikolaus goes from house to house carrying a book in which all the children's deeds are written. If they have been good, he fills their plate, shoe or boot with delicious fruits, nuts and candies. If not, they may find potatoes, coal, or twigs.

Children practice poems and songs for Sankt Nikolaus and make little presents for him. Friends and neighbors come to share in the fun. Candles on the Advent wreath and the big Christmas pyramid with a nativity scene in the center are lit. Stories are read or songs sung as everyone waits for a knock on the door. When it comes, they all know it is Sankt Nikolaus, who comes in with his big book, golden crozier, and a big heavy sack. One of the children gets to hold the golden staff. Each child (and sometimes adults, too) stand in front of the saint. Nikolaus asks each child, "Have you behaved yourself?" "Do you do your homework?" "Do you keep your room tidy?" "Do you help your parents?" Then he opens his big sack and gives presents and candies and treats for all to share. And they give him the little surprises. Nikolaus leaves quickly as he has many places to visit. He travels with a white horse or a donkey and sometimes Ruprecht is with him.

We celebrate it on Dec 6, because thatīs the day Sankt Nikolaus died.

In Germany, Christmas traditions vary by region. Following Saint Nicholas Day, which is mostly for children, the actual Christmas gift-giving usually takes place on the night of Christmas eve, with gifts put under the Christmas tree after a simple meal. The culinary feast typically takes place at lunch on Dec. 24 (evening) or Dec. 25, and usually involves poultry (typically roast goose). The gifts may be brought by the Weihnachtsmann, who resembles St. Nicholas, or by the Christkind, a sprite-like child who may or may not represent the baby Jesus.

During Advent, German towns large and small are filled with the scents of
Lebkuchen (gingerbread) and Glühwein (spiced mulled wine) at traditional
Christmas markets. Stands selling refreshments, ornaments, handicrafts and
gifts are clustered together in the town square. Twinkling lights, colorful
decorations and holiday tunes warm visitors' spirits and ward of the winter
chill. The centuries-old Christkindlesmarkt in medieval Nuremberg draws
millions of visitors each year. Most Christmas markets open before the first
Sunday of Advent, around the time of Thanksgiving in the U.S., and usually
continue until December 24th at 12 noon.

WAYS THINGS WOULD BE DIFFERENT IF SANTA WERE INDIAN

At bedtime, kids would leave a bannock & bologna sandwich for the big guy.

Santa's new moccasins would be made out of Dasher.

His reindeer would be able to navigate his sleigh by Santa pointing his lips.

He'd run around saying "cha" instead of "ho, ho".

The sleigh would need a jump start every other rez and duct tape holding the skis onto the bottom of the sleigh.

All his elves would be tribal workers.

His elves would never show up for work on Mondays and sometimes Fridays.

According to Indian time, our gifts would arrive in February after everything is over with!!!

Bannock!!!! Awwwwwww - I love bannock !!! Itīs fry bread ...

we had it in Canada and Nathanielīs sister showed me how to do it. The only problem back here is the flour! I canīt do it with German flour - it tastes totally different. So I always have to ask a friend of mine to get me some from her sister, who is married to an American Army guy. They can get it on the base.

It's traditional Australian "bush tucker", and it sounds a lot like these bannocks you're talking about.

Isn't damper somthing like bread make out of flour and put on a hot griddle? I remember reading about it from the 1800's and only they used spades in the open fires to cook it. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks for explaining Christkind Anne!! Now I can follow along a little better with the conversation.

Speaking of breads- my husband loves spatzels (sp?). His great-grandmother passed down the recipe to his grandmother, then she passed it onto his mom and aunts, and begs me to make it all the time for him. Which I refuse to do- me being on a low carb diet and him not needing it all the time or else it wouldn't be special. I'm evil I know.

Salad is good, as long as you're not eating it along with lots of fatty foods. I'm very good at convincing myself that, as long as I eat salad, I'm really not having anything that bad!

lol No, there wont be food that's very unhealthy. But we still don't know what else we shall eat
