Robert Plant in a documentary of the Desert-Festival
    Museum's film series explores music-making

CARLSBAD – Tony Vick has collected thousands of music CDs and almost as many stories about the artists behind them.

Vick is bringing his stories and know-how from 30 years in the music business to the Summer Film Series at the Museum of Making Music.
He tells the story of Evelyn Glennie, a Grammy Award-winning solo percussionist who is deaf. She has performed around the world and produced more than 20 recordings.

Glennie's life and music will be spotlighted Saturday at the showing of the film “Touching the Sound” at the museum. Also featured will be “Detaching the World,” a music documentary about Gustav Mahler and the music of Uri Caine.

Vick will lead a discussion after the films.

“The films give a dark room focus to different ways of making music and experiencing it,” Vick said.

In the movie “Touching the Sound,” Glennie is seen drumming in New York City's Grand Central Terminal, at the top of a skyscraper, on a dust bin at the beach in Santa Cruz and with chopsticks on plates in a Japanese coffee shop.

“You'll hear something different and get your ears opened up,” Vick said.

That's what Vick wants to happen.

“I want to open people up to the whole experience of music. It's not just about sitting and listening. You can feel music and it has a physical impact,” he said.

Vick calls himself an unreformed punk rock guitar player. He has played in several bands and is working on his sixth CD.

He performs with Ex-Maquina around San Diego County at places such as the Casbah and Belly Up Tavern.

For 11 years he managed a record store in Encinitas and watched thousands of CD titles come out each year.

Of those, Vick said only about 500 made up the majority of sales.

“There's a whole lot of music that doesn't get attention,” he said.

One of Vick's crusades is to get the word out about interesting music and get people to explore all kinds of music from different cultures.

“The films connect with a lot of people, and if there's one message they should take away, it's OK to be passionate about music. It's more than a soundtrack,” Vick said.

The series continues at 2 p.m. July 29, Aug. 12 and Aug. 26.

On July 29, Vick takes the audience through “Stop Making Sense,” a concert performance film by the Talking Heads band and film maker Jonathan Demme.

Aug. 12 features Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin in a documentary of the Festival in the Desert in northern Mali.

Aug. 26 features “Thirty-Two Short Films About Glenn Gould,” on Canadian pianist Glenn Gould's life and musical career.
