    Trades in der NHL
Kölner Haie verpflichten NHL-Verteidiger Jason Marshall

    Köln, 7. Juni

Wings to let Legace become free agent :(
Holland says team won't offer goalie contract, will explore other options

Manny Legace's time in Detroit appears over.

The Red Wings will not offer Legace a new contract before July 1, leaving both parties free to explore other opportunities.

"I talked to Manny Legace and his agent and told them that we would not be making a contract offer prior to unrestricted free agency," general manager Ken Holland said Friday. "I feel I owe it to our team to explore all options -- trades, what might be available in free agency, who we might be interested in."

The Wings might try for Buffalo's Martin Biron, although he has never played an NHL playoff game, and they'll certainly keep an eye on what develops in Florida on the Roberto Luongo front. Other goalies who are expected to be available include Anaheim's Jean-Sebastien Giguere, although he'll make nearly $4 million next season, Carolina's Martin Gerber, and, possibly, Edmonton's Dwayne Roloson.

In all likelihood the Wings will sign Chris Osgood to be the backup; he made $900,000 last season and doesn't have a case for much of a raise. He has made it clear he'll accept any role in Detroit; had Legace done that, he might be the one returning, in a reduced role.

The Wings took a chance last season with Legace and Osgood as their goaltending tandem, a chance necessitated by the implementation of the new salary cap. The two entered training camp as equals, but then Osgood suffered a groin injury and by the time he was healthy, Legace had a stranglehold on the starter's position. It worked fine during the regular season: Legace went 37-8 with a 2.19 goals-against average and .915 save percentage. But when the eight-seeded Edmonton Oilers (who trail Carolina, 2-0, entering tonight's Game 3 of the Stanley Cup finals) booted Detroit after six games, the odds that Legace would keep his job diminished.

Legace also didn't help his cause when, three days after he finished the playoffs with a 2-4 record and an .884 save percentage, he expounded his demands for next season.

Asked at the time if he wanted to be a starter, Legace replied, "Oh, yeah. I want to start somewhere."

Asked if he'd be satisfied as a backup, Legace said, "No, not at all. I love playing. I don't want to be back on the bench again, so ... I want to start again."

Legace did not return a phone call Friday.

So, the Wings are ready to look elsewhere, within the parameters of a cap that's expected to rise to about $43 million. They currently have about $22.5 million committed to next season's payroll, and it's probably going to take around $8 million to re-sign defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom; those negotiations are on-going.

Holland also has decided to pursue potential free agent forward Brendan Shanahan, who last season made $2.28 million and probably will require a raise.

By the time the Wings also have signed various role players, there'll be about $3 million left for a goaltender, with $1 million in wriggle room. It's possible more could be spent via a trade, but Holland contends he will not part with the team's most desirable bait, center Pavel Datsyuk.

For now, signing Lidstrom is the priority. Holland had hoped to know by late this month whether center Steve Yzerman wanted to return or retire, but after three conversations over the past week, it now appears the decision won't be known until next month at the earliest. It won't affect planning much, because neither Yzerman's salary nor his playing minutes will be very high.

"I told him if he needs all summer, take all summer," Holland said. "I think the club owes it to him. He gets however much time he needs."

Leafs pick up goalie Tellqvist's option
TORONTO (CP) - The Toronto Maple Leafs picked up the one-year club option on goalie Mikael Tellqvist's contract on Thursday.

The 26-year-old Tellqvist played in 25 games for the Maple Leafs last season and posted a record of 10-11-2 with a 3.13 goals-against average. He registered career-highs in games played, wins and shutouts (two).

Tellqvist and J.S. Aubin are both under contract for next season and will probably be the team's two goalies if it doesn't sign any free agents.

Tellqvist, a native of Sundbyberg, Sweden has played in 39 career NHL games for Toronto and has represented his country at the Olympics in 2002 and 2006.

He also played for Sweden at the IIHF world hockey championship in 2000, 2001 and 2003.

DETROIT (CP) - Free agent defenceman Danny Markov has agreed to terms with the Detroit Red Wings, a source told The Canadian Press on Wednesday.

The 30-year-old spent last season with the Nashville Predators, a team as deep as any on the blue-line. He had 11 assists and a plus-9 rating in 58 games last season.

Markov will join his sixth NHL team and fifth in as many years.

In 472 NHL games with Toronto, Phoenix, Carolina, Philadelphia and the Predators, he has 25 goals and 106 assists for 131 points.
