    Sobering moment...
Life is precious. We all know this, but in the day-to-day rut, often forget to pay it mind.

I'm paying it a whole lot of mind right now...

One of my students just passed away on Tuesday. It's the first time the PACE program has ever lost a current student during the school year. Crystal was just 20 years old, and as of December was still living the normal PACE life--going to classes, going to work, hanging out with her many friends, giving her RA's the occasional hard time ( :D )--just being young, living and loving life. She had a smile that lit a room, and always had a positive attitude. She was a hard worker in all of her responsibilities with the program--she was a true role model for her fellow classmates and an example of just what the PACE program can achieve.

Now...she's gone. The doctors don't even know why. She had most of the symptoms of ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease), but the progression was far too fast, and they never isolated the cause.

The program did award her the completion certificate for the PACE program on Monday (her parents had flown in a couple of people from the program as they knew she didn't have much time left). She indicated her excitement in whatever way she could, and when they put the graduation cap on her, did her best to smile. (She had little to no control of the muscles in her torso or head.) She left this world happy, and she's now free of the pain that wracked her 24-7 in the end.

The students still here are pretty devastated, as you can imagine, but they are coming together and pulling through it in ways that are amazing me. The power of the human spirit...

Take time today to tell those you care about that you're thinking of them--you never know what tomorrow may bring.

Dedicating 'The Spirit Of Life' to Crystal. Much love always, sweetie. Keep us honest down here. :hug

Very nice of you Shannon to remember her.

Wish everyone the wonderment of the short time we get to ride the globe.

As a lifeform we come and go and elboe each other along the way.
Sometimes it's a "hello nudge", other times a "get outa my way jab".

Nice elboes intertwine as we walk together...poking, bending, swaying.
Steady elboes hold us up as we sit, or rise from resting.....

Elboes are visible, some are rough, some are smoothe, some are clothed and most are naked. They are not thought about often, until injured.

Vulnerable as people....ignored until needed....wrinkled until moisturized, hidden until used, easily feeling pain, needed by everyone.....

How it feels to have your half you arm up to your elboe, in a bucket of water, then quickly taken out.....the water fills back up the space taken, but the level of the water in the bucket is lower than had been.

So is the world.....it continues with a new day filled with new chances, new life, new emotions, new pain, and the world is a little different without those we touch, remember, and share our lives with.
    ............................................................................................
my new perspective since losing my loved ones is that they never go away, they are always looking over your shoulder, and available when you need them....their energy never ends.....it's your's to reach for.

    Love and hugs,
    Lin xx

It's always sad to hear when someone that young has to die. However if it reminds us of all the important things in our own life then we could possibly find a sense within.
Yes, life is too short - so live your life. Mick would say: "La vita é bella" ;)

    My condoleances Shannon.

Yes, we all have to spread the word of love to the people who we think deserve it. Let us do this everyday. Don't think they know, make sure they know.

It's sad to hear a young and good one has got to go. I hope she found some peace now, after a hard and tiring battle.

Sorry to hear the loss of one you care about, Shannon. Yes, one so young, with so much ahead of them.

As Michi said, if the only thing we can gain from the loss of a loved one is to "reminds us of all the important things in our own life then we could possibly find a sense within." Yes to find the truly important things in life, showing friends and family love and compassion and dropping the material things in life to a much lower priority.

    Thinking of you. Pat

PS And who is showing off thier pictures of the 2000 Convention?  :D

Can you believe that was six years ago?

    Thanks, Pat, very true words.

2000 convention pictures? :?: :?: :?: *confused* I wasn't there--you were though, weren't you? I WOULD have been there had they had it when they were SUPPOSED to, over Mick's birthday--my ex and I had booked a trip to England for then. We still went, just didn't get to do the SR thing.

But yes, 6 years ago. What hit me was listening to Holding Back The Years the other day--the Picture Book version. And realizing that my concerts this summer will celebrate my 20th year as an SR fan.

WOW. Exactly 2/3 of my life now. I can't believe it's been THAT LONG...but then I can...it's weird. At least I've been blessed enough to have that many years with this.

*frowns* I've been a fan for as long as Crystal was alive. Different perspective on it... :-(

She wouldn't want me moping down here. Need to enjoy this, and enjoy the company of everyone here, while we all still can.

    Yes, that's right! >Convention 2000 (Nov. 30th, 2000)<
I had such a good time. The picture is one of Mo's nice snapshots! Mine didn't turn out so good 'though I had a front-row seat. My camera wasn't good enough.
I think I still have the interview. If you like I could post it again.

*gulp* Hi, idiot here--where is this? I didn't come across any new piccies anywhere in the last 24 hours... :-( Slap me now if it's right under my nose...

OH! *takes slap* *ducks* It's so similar to how he's looking now--I thought it might be one of those pictures from that recent article. I hadn't looked at the pics--just read the article. And this picture would have fit right in--the Italian phrase on the shirt, the glass of wine in hand, the relaxed posture...*shrug* And even though it was 6 years ago, I have yet to see any pics from that convention (until now)--as it took place after the SRIS folded and I fell out of the fandom for a while--lost touch with most folks.

Like I said, idiot here.

    Sad news.
    Hey Shannon,

Such sad news. My thoughts & prayers got out to Crystal, her family & her friends. From your description, she was such a spunky, happy, full of life young person who was well loved & respected. It is terrible that she had to suffer from the pain. I’m happy to see that the people running the PACE program were kind enough awarded her a PACE completion certificate and give her a graduation. A nice tribute to a young life cut short way too soon. May God bless her always.

We have to be thankful for what we have and to know we have so many wonderful people who care & love us! Without it, what would we have? I'm happy to see Crystal had that love. :-D

    Hugs to you!
    DIANAD

She did indeed, Diana, and she spread twice as much as she got. That's the kind of person she was. Thanks for your kind thoughts. Her parents are coming tomorrow to collect her things from her room--I hope they get through the day OK. The students have done several wonderful tributes to her here--a display in the lobby, a display on her room door, a beautiful memorial service that we had yesterday, and we'll be getting T-shirts to wear within a week or so. When I upload the latest batch of pics from my camera, might put the one of the lobby display up, it's very touching.

    Hi Shan~

I have been away from the boards for awhile and was so sorry to read about the loss of your student. I hope you and the rest of those in your watch are doing well and healing. It is such a sad thing to have happen but it does make us thankful for the current day and all we have.

    keeping you in my thoughts~

Thanks, Angie. Glad to see you back! We're doin' alright up here in Baker Hall, just winding down the school year...the students are actually pretty mellow for the first part. Me, meanwhile, having to shift my focus to an upcoming house move and entire summer of travel...so much to do, don't know if there's enough me to do it all...

Crystal's keeping us upbeat though. Her spirit touched us all. :-D
