SUMMARY: GIDEON’S PEOPLE
Published in 1996, written by Carolyn Meyer
This is an Amish, Jewish and family life fiction story, about the difference between Amish and Jewish religion. It takes place in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in the year 1911. At the beginning Isaac, had an accident with his father, Tathe, in a wagon. After he wakes up, he is by the family Stolzfuss and doesn’t know where his father or his whole family are. Isaac is a Jewish immigrant from Russia.
The Stolzfuss are: Mawmy, Grossdawdy, Mamm, Datt, the eldest Amos, 19-year-old Levi, 16-year-old Gideon, 12-year-old Annie, 10-year-old Ben, 7-year-old Danny and the youngest Katie.
Gideon thinks about to leave his family, because the relation-chip between him and his Datt is a very difficult, nothing what Gideon does seems good enough. The only one who now about the leaving is Annie, because she found forbidden things under Gideon’s bed.
At the same time Isaac attune to live in a foreign household. But the food is difficult, because it is “treyf”, this mean for the Jewish the food isn’t kosher.
Annie tells Barbara, her sister in law, that her brother wants to leave and had all this things.
Gideon thinks about that he goes to his uncle in Big Valley, his uncle Aaron is shun by the community because he had cut his hair.
After the whole community have repair the wagon from Isaac, Gideon sees his chance to leave. He must brings Isaac, the horse and the wagon back to Tateh. Annie knows it that this is Gideon’s chance to leave and asks Barbara if she drive with her in the city to embarrass Gideon.
In the end, Annie sees his brother Gideon on the gate and says a tearfully good-bye to him. Gideon and Annie have a secretly letter friendship, because Gideon leaved home.
Comment:
The beginning was boring for people who knows much about the Amish and Jewish cultures, but then the action goes on. After the information about Amish and Jewish were told, I like reading the book. The brother and sister relation-chip between Annie and Gideon is amazing, I found it heart-rending as Gideon know he leave and Annie wanted to embarrass him, therewith he stay at home.
Barbara, Gideon’s sister in law, is for me the rebirth of understanding, she simple drive with Annie in the city to search Gideon or as she save the secret as Annie tell her what is going on with her brother.
I am confident that it is terrible that if the community says you are not Amish like that your hole family shun you, I can’t understand it that they follow without fuss or quibble.

This is a story about the difference between Amish and Jewish families or rather their religions. The novel takes place in 1911 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. It begins with an accident which the main person, Isaac and his father had. Isaac is a Jewish immigrant from Russia, however after the accident he was semiconscious and so his father, called Tathe takes him to an Amish family, the Stolzfuss´. Afterwards he wakes up and doesn’t know where he and where his father are. The Stolzfuss´ were a big family they had eleven members. I think the most important of them are Mamm, Datt, 16- year-old Gideon and 12-year-old Annie. Gideon toys with the idea to leave the family because of the difficult relationship with his Datt. His sister Annie is the only one who knows the intention from her elder brother, because on evening she found a few forbidden things in Gideon´s room.
Isaac feels comfortable by the family, the only problem is that the most of the food that they cook isn’t kosher and so he are from his religion not allowed to eat that one.
An important fact in that book is that Annie tells Barbara, who is her sister in law that Gideon wants to leave. He wants to go to Aaron, his uncle who left the community, too because he cut his hair.
After a few weeks the Amish guys have repaired Isaac´s wagon. Gideon has the job to bring Isaac and his wagon back home. However, there is the chance for Gideon to leave that knows Annie. So she pray Barbara to obey (folgen?!) Gideon. Barbara did this and at the end of this novel Annie sees her brother on the gate where they said good-bye! Furthermore they have a secret letter conversation.
My Comment:
For me the book was at first very difficult to read, because there were so many new vocabularies to learn! After a few reading lessons I were “in it” and it was much easier to read. Furthermore I learned much about the Jewish culture and their pattern of life. Whereas for me the novel was a bit boring, like the last one that we have read. The main thing that fails for me is that in this book there were under plot! One of the positive features of the book was for me the relationship between Gideon and Annie. They were so lovely. Nevertheless, I would not recommend this book.
