    Favorite Music Genre
Since Simply Red's music draws on so many influences, I figure everyone here has certain genres they veer toward with their favorite tracks. What's your pleasure?

I like the jazz-flavored tracks most...really feeling a jazz fusion vibe overall in the last year (and I can thank two certain gentlemen for my extensive exploration of that territory  :D ). I like the funk and reggae tinged stuff as well, though.

Something about Mick's voice...does it every time.

Also, we're drawn to Sade, Zeplin, Enya, Hendrix. Eurythmics, Doors,
Queen, Shaikira, Luther, Barry, Gwen, Cyndi, Prince, Basia, Marvin,
Ian Anderson, Rod, George Michael, Tina, Bowie, Winwood, Clapton....

    many more....

I take it you mean what style of SR music do you lean to Sas ?

Most of it, apart from the reggae type tunes, which i mostly don't like ie

    Night Nurse
    Ghetto Girl
    Hillside Ave

etc, although i love Model ( or should that be i love models )

If we're talking what other types of music Float Your Boat mine are

    Old School Hip Hop
Breakbeats( old Funk & Soul etc )
    70's & 80's ( Everyone from Blondie, Adam & The Ants, Human League, Culture Club,Madness etc ) 8)

Yeah, I meant the genre within SR's stuff that you like the most (as they have so many influences), but like all good topics, it's gone many directions. Looks like you like a good rhythm section as well!! :-D

    simplymichi - 27.04.2006, 20:46

I'm not sure but I think I just love the mixture of all these genres they are doing. That's something special in today's music business I think.
It seems there are "drawers" for each genre which are called R&B or Reggae or Rock or Jazz or HipHop... and you sort of have to put a band in the correct drawer... and then there's no way out of it.
I don't like that thought 'cause I'm sort of a messy :D  seems I like disorder :D

So, to make it short, I think it's great that SR are open minded for so many styles and genres.

x x x Michi ... who doesn't want to see SR caught in a drawer

VERY well said, Michi--I too respect the fact that they defy genre. My favorite artists/CD's all do. :top

    My favs!
Shannon, I love topics like this one!!!! :-D

When it comes to SR’s music, I have to say I love all of the musical styles they had played over the years. Lots a variety from jazz, reggae, soul, pop & dance etc. It's all-good!!! And this is the reason why they are my favorite band! Mick’s a great singer & the band members are all excellent musicians & performers. They know how to play different styles of music and make it sound so perfect! It’s what makes then unique & one of the best musical groups around!!! :D :D :D

OK I’m not finished. I’m a big musical fan so here it goes. :whistle :whistle :whistle

For non-SR stuff, I’d have to say my all time absolute favorite music genre is……
80's New Wave & UK Pop---Duran Duran, Flock of Seagulls, ABC, Culture Club, New Order, Depeche Mode, Information Society, Hair Cut 100, Level 42, Oingo Bongo, Erasure, Pet Shop Boys, Tears for Fears, B-52’s, Talking Heads, The Cure & many more! :top

    And I also love……
Techno---BT, Sasha, Sander Kleinberg, Sarfi Duo, Paul Van Dyke, Way out West & Hybrid.
Smooth/Contemporary Jazz---Brian Culbertson, Chris Botti, Boney James, Chuck Mangonie, Herb Albert, 3rd Force, LA Jazz Syndicate, Fattburger, Dave Koz, Jeff Golub, Marc Antoine, Acoustic Alchemy, George Benson & Gota just to name a few! 8)
Rock--- Franz Ferdinand, U2, The Eagles, Cold Play, The Police, Queen, Roxy Music, David Bowie, The Clash and loads of other bands! :rock
Country (Not today’s pop influenced stuff!)---Toby Keith, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash.
Disco---KC & The Sunshine Band, Chic and many of the one hit disco wonders!!!
Pop---Bee Gees, Sade, Sting, Jimmy Buffett & No Doubt. The list can go on & on!!!

And I also like to listen too…
Big Band Music, Traditional Jazz, Reggae, New Age, Punk Rock, Classical, Polka (Hey I’m Polish so it’s a given!!!) & so on & so on & so on…… :clap

The only things I'm not really into is Heavy Metal, Rap, Hip Hop and the Teen Scene/Bubblegum pop stuff like Hillary Duff, Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys & NSYNC. And please don't think I'm putting any of this stuff down because I'm saying I do not like it much! They are just not my style but I know there are plenty of talented artists within these genres!!! So I respect them for their hard word & talent because I know I could never be a performer myself!!!

Ah, Diana, a woman after my own heart, so much crossover in our tastes. How many of the Acoustic Alchemy albums do you have? I've only got two at the mo' but want more, especially their most recent, "American/English"--have heard some tracks and really like the vibe.
Also, quick question--do you happen to have "Airdrawndagger" by Sasha? Check the credits if you do--you'll figure out why I'm asking. I'll be snagging it eventually...

Ahhhhhh...tunes. :-D Don't rule out performance though--if you find the instrument that speaks to you, it can be as much fun to play as to listen.

I would have to say those with the 'SOUL' feel to them.

That was what attracted me to SR in 1986 and I still like it.

As for general music genre's, I'm a bit eclectic. My music library contains things from Red Hot Chilli Peppers to Frank Sinatra. Work that one out.

    Hey Shannon,
I didn't see this when you 1st posted it! Sorry! It's hard to keep track of what I post to on here!!! Hey I’m glad to see you like some of the stuff I do. Anything with a jazzy vibe just floats my boat. One of the Reasons why I love SR so much!!!! :D

To answer your questions, I do have a few Acoustic Alchemy's CD's but not their latest American/English. I have Radio Contact, AArt & The Beautiful Game. Their stuff is great!!! I have to get American/English soon since I do hear a few of the songs from that CD on the Smooth Jazz Radio Station in Philly every now & then. Wow!! That came out last year I should have it by now but every time I got to a record store, I never know what to buy & I end up getting stuff months later. I have to get some of their older stuff too! These guys make the coolest groves!!! 8)

And yes I do have Sasha's CD Airdrawndagger and I know who played on it!!! Mr. Steve Lewinson!!!! I remember when I 1st got it & saw Steve's name on it I was excited. It’s cool to see our SR guys working on other musical projects! Sasha’s stuff is quite different than anything Mick & SR would do and it’s great to see Steve is quite diversified in the projects he is involved in! Did you happen to get this CD yet? If so, what do you think of it??? I like it!!! It's an intresting & cool techno CD. Quite mellow and laid back!!! You can hear Steve’s cool baselines on this CD!!!!! Great work done by Steve!!! :top

Now as for playing an instrument, I still not sure about it? I used to by violin when I was young but I was horrible at it! Hated the whole experience so much that I never really wanted to try another instrument again for years! I do have an Acoustic Guitar and an old Casio keyboard that hasn’t seen the light of day for years & years. Maybe I should learn how to play one of them for the fun of it. Here’s a question for you, with your bass, did you take any lessons or are you self-taught? Any suggestions on what I should do?

As soon as someone works out my collection ranging from Air Supply to Nine Inch Nails.   I think it's great to find people with diverse music tastes. :top

I typed out a long response to this and got kicked off before it posted. :motz

I'll e-mail ya. But the basics:
Check the credits for "AArt"--you'll find another familiar face--or set of drumsticks, as it were. :D
Have 'American/English' now--well worth a grab, go for it.
Not got 'Airdrawndagger' yet, but WILL. :top
Advice on starting an instrument in the e-mail--maybe I'll copy and paste to here for anyone else thinking of doing so. :-D
