Pride and Prescience: Or, a Truth Univesally Acknowledged

In her well-crafted mystery debut, fantasy author Bebris (Pool of Radiance, etc.) picks up the action where Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice left off-on the wedding day of Elizabeth Bennett and Fitzwilliam Darcy, who marry in a double ceremony with Elizabeth's older sister Jane and Charles Bingley. The Bennett brides are soon upstaged by Bingley's sister, Caroline, who announces her engagement to a Louisiana planter. Caroline's imminent nuptials mean the Darcys must remain in London, where an evening party leads to a meeting with an archeology professor who specializes in the indigenous culture of North America. Newlyweds Mr. and Mrs. Darcy later travel to Netherfield, as does the professor, who brings along some "curiosities" he's collected that he credits with unusual powers. A series of improbable events ensues, leaving one murdered house guest and two sedated hosts. Can the American artifacts hold the key to the bizarre occurrences? When an unexpected blizzard cuts the house off from the rest of the neighborhood, it's up to Mr. and Mrs. Darcy to unmask the killer and restore everyone's peace of mind. Despite an anachronism or two (e.g., summoning a constable rather than the local magistrate), the author provides convincing portraits of life in London and at Netherfield. With a touch of sorcery and lots of red herrings, Bebris works her own brand of Austen magic, whetting the reader's appetite for a sequel.

Suspense and Sensibility Or, First Impressions Revisited
Jane Austen fans who regret the author wrote only six full-length novels have reason to rejoice: Bebris's second Mr. and Mrs. Darcy mystery is even better than her strong debut, Pride and Prescience (2004).In the spring of 1813, Elizabeth and Fitzwilliam Darcy agree to sponsor Elizabeth's sister Kitty for a season in London along with Darcy's 17-year-old sister, Georgiana. In the course of their social rounds, Kitty meets Harry Dashwood - a younger cousin of the Sense and Sensibility Dashwoods - and the courtship begins. Mr. Darcy makes inquiries into Harry's character, fortune and expectations, but no sooner does he receive favorable answers than the suitor begins to behave most strangely. Harry gives a friend the "cut direct" outside Boodle's Club, and there are rumors of gambling and worse excesses. It's up to Darcy and Elizabeth to discover the cause of these aberrations, and, if at all possible, see Kitty happily established. The author smoothly combines characters from Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility while remaining true to Austen's originals. A few elements of the paranormal help illuminate the mores of the period. Regency romance readers will also be delighted.

North by Northanger: Or, the Shades of Pemberley

Bebris provides another feast for Janeites in her third Mr. and Mrs. Darcy mystery (after 2005's Suspense and Sensibility). Elizabeth and Fitzwilliam, about a year into their marriage, stop off at Northanger Abbey on their way from Bath to Pemberley, at the invitation of Captain Tilney. There the couple find a poorly managed house and their good-natured host swathed in bandages. After a brief visit, they've scarcely resumed their journey when a Gloucestershire constable arrests them on the charge of stealing a diamond set belonging to the late Mrs. Tilney, the captain's mother. A note written by Darcy's mother 18 years earlier hinting at a lost family heirloom and Elizabeth's "condition" further complicate this well-told tale. Austen's fans will be happy to see the reappearance of not only the Bennet family but also Lady Catherine de Burgh. For film buffs, there's an echo of Hitchcock's thriller, though the crags of the Peak District must stand in for Mount Rushmore
