Crich Destination Displays

by clnhtn » 20.04.2008, 09:05

In another tram forum of which I am a member someone posted a 1960s' image of Glasgow 1100 with Crich destination displays. I remember these on 1100, Blackpool 40, Johannesburg 60 (maybe even still there on this car) and perhaps Glasgow 812. I wondered if anyone on here knows or remembers others. (Yes I know I could ask Keith Terry but it is interesting to get other people to exercise their grey matter too.)

Crich destination displays

by Christoph Heuer » 21.04.2008, 22:16

Hello everyone,

From some photographs in old issues of "The Journal" I think that Blackpool&Fleetwood 2 (Rack 2) also has Crich destination displays. And no, I do not believe they are still present on Johannesburg 60.

Regards

Hi CH,

Could you possibly add a link to the pics?

Thanks,

Jack

Sorry Jack

I tried copying the link to the photo of 1100 but it asks for my Yahoo password. My own photos of that era havent been digitised but maybe someone else could oblige.

Thanks to Christoph too, I had forgotten about B&F2 but its destination boxes are long gone since its return to authentic conditon as a Tramroad car.

Certainly the early operating cars from Sheffield never acquired Crich names.

Hi CH,

No worries! If anyone can help, please do! Was it the eurotrams yahoo! group? I remeber some pics on there, which unfortunately I missed!

RE Jo'burg 60 - this is no longer retaining them, as I went through the whole blind a fortnight ago to find a suitable dessie, and there were no Crich refs (i assume Town End, Wakebridge etc?)

As for Rack 2 - I think it is so much better now it has been restored!

Thanks,

Jack

Cars that I know carried 'Crich Destinations' are as follows:

Glasgow 812
Glasgow 1100
So'Ton 45 (picture in the 1967 guide book of it showing 'Town End')
Jo'burg 60
Blackpool 40
Blackpool 49
Blackpool 166 (the small 'Cabin' board is a Crich feature from Crich 'Cabin crossing services' at the old Extrav's, it should read 'Fare 6d')
B&F 2
B&F 40

There are others that are sometimes claimed to be Crich destinations but are genuine destinations. 'Town End' on 399 (Bramley Town End) and 'Museum' on Gateshead 5 are two examples.

Personally I'm quite glad the 'Crich destinations' didn't last long. They were hardly in keeping with the personality and identity of the vehicle. I think destinations give vehicles a sense of civic pride for that particular place and sometimes make the town/city identifyable with a quick glance (Old Kent Road for instance).

Hi all,

it is a bit OT here, but to my knowledge all tramcars at Beamish carry (or carried?) Beamish destinations. But then the tramway always appeared to be more of a means to get visitors from one area to the next rather than an exhibit in its own right.

Beamish did carry them but I'm not sure if they still do. Certainly they had 'Entrance' and 'Town' at one point but I've not seen them show these for a long, long time.

Yep, Beamish have long done away with their own blinds though Sheffield 264 still retains them, not having operated for a long time now.

Think it came about once the full loop was completed, though it might have been more recent than that - certainly the more recent restorations (114, 16) have had appropriate blinds from the start.
