Hi Guys,
i was on holiday in Wales last week and while walking on the beach i noticed there were some strange looking "rocks" mixed up with the normal type.
when broken open they contained 20 and 30mm cannon shells . they were so hot when they hit the beach they fused the sand to the shell, forming the "rocks".
ive since done some research about the area and found it was a gunnery range, used by aircraft from a local airbase during WW2, mostly Spitfires.
the shells are empty and have no fuze. does anybody know if hollow, practice rounds were used in training.?
Cheers
Roy

The fused sand has been bound together by iron oxide (rust) from the round, I have seen it with shell fragments on old ranges in the past. It just goes to show how little FeO is required to bind together fine sand.
In nature this can take over 1 million years to create a fairly well consolidated sandstone but when a person puts a lump of steel in the sand it happens in just a few decades, especially when there is plenty of water about to take the iron into solution.
Interesting all the same.

Hi Roy.
Been reading up on your find, I think I might be right in saying that some pratice rounds they filled the nose with a concrete solution as this would balance the round the same .

PDAAR,
cheers for the info. i didnt consider that. some of these things have rocks also embedded in them and as the "rocks" showed signs of intense heat my mind went the least way of resistance
interestingly, these things look in perfect condition when opened, with a slight greeninsh colour. they rust within a day or two.
one even had a readable date of manufacture.
Martin,
thanks to you as well. i cannot find any info on practice ammo. did you find this detail on the net?.

Be aware, this seems NO practice ammo!
this is a 2cm AP already shot projectil with a normal load of "WP" Phosphor filling.
The Practice onces are much different and have a nosefuze.
here in my collection:
black one is the left is the one you have found,
light bleu in the right is the practice one.

Thanks for the warning but the ones i found are all empty. they are hollow and do not have a fuse.
i would have thought that it would be a waste of badly needed resources to use live ammo for firing practice. it wouldnt need to explode or burn. the hits would be clearly visible as the shells hit the water, target, beach or whatever
have i got this wrong?

Hi Roy.
The info came from a ex RAF tail gunner who joined just as the war was coming to an end,but had completed his training and was being posted. He explained that they did use practice rounds, when target training. This was many years ago when I was in the Air Training Corps.
He descibed that the rounds were filled with a concreate type of substance and the Idea was not to destoy the target with live ammo but to only mark the target.
Hope this helps. Martin

We used to find the 60Lb rockets ala Hawker Typhoon, on Dengie marshes. These were also dummy concrete warheads. Ballistically the same.

the odd thing is that these shells are empty, no sign of concrete or anything.
as can be seen from this photo, they have blunt ends like the practice rounds posted by crashsiteslimburg. my photo above, is deceptive and makes them look pointed.

Hi Roy hope all is well with you?
This is only a thought maybe what you have is the inner part of the round as the outer casing has rusted in that crust that had to be cracked open.Have had this when finding steel encrusted parts off the b24,it's only when you break open the crust that you can see what the part looked like.

Hi Martin, yes alls ok here thanks.
the shells are complete when they are first removed from the sand and rock built up around them. there is a metal stopper in the tail end which would stop any filling coming out. the date is visible on the outer casing before they start rusting.
Cheers

Roy.
looking more closely at the pic I have noticed at the base it looks like there is a part of the outer shell that has rusted and still attached to the plugI still think what you have there is the inner sleeve as the outer has rusted away.
Maybe I am wrong but ,it would be nice to find sort of documentation on this round,
Martin

Lancasterman - 15.01.2009, 21:40Interesting rock
I have just registered. This is an interesting post as I had never thought about what happens to rounds when they reach the ground. Interesting to see the cannon shell inside the "rock"
