What other bands/musicians do you support?
I was thinking about this today. Do we have something or someone to compare our SR experiences with? Or is my whinging a case of just wanting more of what I'm not entitle too.?????

As I have previous stated in this forum (sorry to bore you with this), I am associated in a similar way with an Australian band called The Whitlams. Only today, I recieved the following from them in our daily digest. It recounts a posting made by Tim Freedman (lead singer, lead writer, keyboardist and extremely good eye candy) early last year.

"""hello all, tim here. coming towards the end of another recording project and soon you'll have a new album to assess, and plenty of gigs to describe, read about, or attend. we
might be silent for long periods, but we are always hatching up
something. thanks for hanging around during the inevitable lulls.
as you know, cath wells is moving on from being the list
manager. i'd like acknowledge the enormous effort she has put into
the whitlams' community ever since the chat group started. she's
educated the stupid, mollified the angry and bred the enthusiasm for
our work since day one on the web. and let's face it, there have
been a few real twits on the list over the years. i don't know how
she's kept her good humour. mind you, for every twit, there are a
couple of diamonds in the coal face. so when you email
fow@thewhitlams.com now you will be read by dee who is already in
charge of the online shop, and has spoken to anyone with any strange
requests already. this month we have some strange and exciting
gigs. lots of large civic events and festivals. terepai is
unfortunately living in his parallel universe in an RnB band in
canada. they are called "soul decision". so we have a couple of
fill-ins on the drums this month, lee and jarrod. pai will be back
for the album launch gigs in the second half of the year. i'm
feeling strangely relaxed about the forthcoming album. it's in the
home stretch, and though the writing was quite arduous, the actual
recording has been very smooth. we have just 2 weeks of tracking to
go, and then 2 weeks of mixing. short simple songs, no strings, no
metronomes. it will be out on time, whenever they tell me that is
we will have a competition again for some fows to come into the
studio while we are mixing. however we are mixing in melbourne in
may. i'll announce the comp soon so we can let the winners know with
plenty of notice. there will be 3 or 4 winners. starting up soon
there will be a quarterly newsletter. one section will comprise of
questions to any band member answered, hopefully, by that particular
band member. probably about 5 questions per newsletter. for the
first edition, out soon, can you fire some interesting questions at
the list and we'll pick 5 to feature in issue number 1? thanks.
questions about lyrics, or particular gigs, or what product jak uses
in his hair. while i'm here, there are a few things i've meant
to answer over the last few months.
1 the basement show on the telly. someone questioned whether the
show was scripted because the questions from the audience were the
same as in their city. well, no. when i started asking if there were
questions about the lyrics to "louis" i was amazed the same
questions tended to come back. in sydney the 3rd and 4th questions
made it to the tv show. the "banana chair" question, however, was a
first i think. as for my own introductions, a certain sameness
develops after 20 shows, because i see what works. but there will
always be stuff that surprises me. as in the late bennett's lane
show, one which, thankfully was never reviewed on the list. it ended
with me doing a sir les patterson impersonation - bottle of wine,
white shirt after a 150 minute show. a little tired and emotional
    they call it.
2 a young fellow, new to the list i think, showed off a remarkable
memory some months back by reciting the lyrics to the new songs he
had heard at the trio show on the gold coast. since it takes me
weeks to remember what he did in 3 minutes, i was of course directed
to the rather unavoidable conclusion that he was, at the show,
harbouring on his person a small recording device. which is all very
well. but his transcription was very loose. so in his honour i give
you the first in a series of lyrics to the songs of the forthcoming
album entitled "my momma, she's a punk rocker". here is one of the
tunes i wrote in new york at the start of last year fondness
makes the heart grow absent i woke twice last night, walked to
the window looked down at the gravestones guarding st patrick's in
the snow and i thought if that's where it all ends i should get
home again with you i should get home again with you when
fondness makes the heart grow absent i gotta find an orbit a little
closer to the ground when fondness in my heart is absent i'm in
awe of the sabotage within in the morning the cliffs of fear
still rising from my sleep a note from the demons lies accusing at
my feet the parks are empty and the tea's gone cold i could slip
too easily from the earth's hold the life has been lived and the
story sold when fondness... black ice is creeping over
the the pavement, an overcoat slips to the ground like the angel
of death is playing on prince street they're falling and not making
a sound when fondness... to this evening and what a
pleasure, here in balthazar's red leather a little private toast and
a vow to die a natural death in my own good time, the
moral of which, i suppose, is see what the day has to offer. you
could end up in a fine restaurant, ripping at a bread roll, sipping
a fine wine thinking everything's going to be alright... i'm looking
forward to an active successful second half of the year, and hope to
chat to all of you out on the road, bye for now, tim. """"

Tim is obviously keen to keep the fans informed. Surely it is in his, the bands, the sales, best interest to provide good quality commentary/details/interest.

Is this someone who has not yet taken his loyal fans for granted? I'm not sure. I can probably make many judgements about what is and isn't written and I would probably be wrong. But this posting by Tim, is good quality detail with some real time dedicated to make the posting detailed, answered some questions and provided details on the new album, as well as the (passed) competition. Although the album is not yet released, (March 2006). :top

Hope this posting wasn't too much to read. Apologies for boring you with NON SIMPLY RED stuff. There is a central theme to this posting.

The thing we all crave from our family, friends, partners, managers and work colleagues. YOU CAN NEVER HAVE TOO MUCH COMMUNICATIONS. :flower

    Cheers Pat

I've never followed any other band like I've followed Simply Red (probably a good thing!!), so I have nothing to compare it to except what I've seen looking at other bands' websites. On the old site, we had it better than a lot of bands...but as you've shown here, Pat, it could have been even better. Good on Tim for being open with his fans.

Would love to see that from anyone in SR, but as we all know, we're not ENTITLED to anything. I'm grateful for what they have given us in the past, and hope to hear more in future.

Just a return to what we DID have would be nice though... :|

    Ah well, life goes on...*sigh*

Re: What other bands/musicians do you support?

Hi everyone~ Simply Red is the only band I follow as well.

Redorro~ I enjoyed reading your post and the info from that Whitlams band leader. I think that it is fantastic that he chooses to interact that way. And who knows what his reasons are. But I am sure the fans love it :)

I guess there much a part of me that wants to stay away from the negative in things~ maybe it is naive, maybe not. I am going to continue to believe that the reasons for the SR forums not being put back up are legitimate and have nothing to do with taking the fans for granted. There is so much behind the scenes that we don't know and don't need to know. And wouldn't it be very out of character for Mick and those about him to do something out of spite or to anger the fans. I just don't think that is the underlying nature of the situation.

I have been content here~ and in fact have been more comfortable posting here~ than on the old site. This seems to be more about the singers and the band and the music. Not the nut-job obsessive fans who have seem to be a step down from stalkers at times. Again, the feeling of entitlement and obtrusiveness really rubs me wrong. OK~ yes it is nice to have Mick pop in once in awhile and say hi but I take it with a laugh and think~hmmm, he must be having a slow day :) His job is to make the music we love. Anything else he chooses to do is just a gift. I like to not look a gift horse in the mouth. That isn't meant as a personal statement about anyone here~ just a thought in general on how I feel.

I do thank everyone here for making this a VERY pleasent and fun place to come and to Michi and Shannon for keeping it as such.

    peace~
    Angie

I was unpacking my vinyl and CD's today (after moving nearly 2 months ago) and found my Elton John Collection and my Rod Stewart collection.

I was huge on Elty. Went to all his Sydney concerts in the 70's, 80's up until the early 90's when I lost interest when his music and voice changed.

I didn't join the Elton John Fan Club. Thought it was a bit silly.

WELL, HERE I AM IN THE SIMPLY RED FAN CLUB AND HAVE BEEN SINCE THE LATE 80'S!!!!!!!!

Will I ever grow up?????

THERE ARE SO MANY BUT I WILL START WITH MY OLD, NEW FAVORITE.
FOR THE FIRST TIME ON SATURDAY, I WATCHED PRINCE'S MOVIE,
"PURPLE RAIN". YES, IT'S TRUE, I HAD CHECKED IT OUT OF THE LIBRARY.
IN THE 80'S WHEN HE CAME OUT, I LIKED SOME OF HIS MUSIC, BUT REALLY HAD NO IDEA HOW VERY GOOD HE WAS IN EVERYWAY.
THE MOVIE SORT OF SUCKED, BUT THIS CHARACTER PRINCE WAS CAPITVATING AND I JUST COULDN'T GET OVER THE MUSIC AND HOW HE DANCED, MOVED AND PLAYED THE GUITAR.
IT WAS MICK WHO HAD MY ATTENTION THEN, ( AND OFCOURSE NOW)
AND I REALLY DIDN'T APPRECIATE OTHER ARTIST AS I DO NOW.
BEING A LATE BLOOMER, I TEND TO DISCOVER THINGS FROM THE PAST
    RIGHT NOW IN THE PRESENT.
SO TODAY, I WILL HEAD RIGHT FOR THE USED MUSIC STORE AND PICK UP PURPLE RAIN AND PLAY IT TO DEATH.
I WILL LOOK UP EVERYTHING ON PRINCE AND IMMERSE MYSELF INTO
    HIS TALENT.
THANK YOU FOR ASKING SUCH AN INSIGHTFUL QUESTION.

The Bee Gee's are fabulous. I used to listen to them as a kid when my dad woul play their 45's. My girls (age 6&8 ) can sing their entire catalog from their very first songs (New York Mining Disatster, First of May etc. all the way to the current day) They are wonderful.

My two fave songs of theirs are "You Win Again" and "One"--neither hit the charts here, but they're fab tracks. :top

Both excellent tracks Shannon. I wish that they would perform again ~ they have not since the death of Maurice. I know he provided much of the harmonies~ but I would love to see Barry and Robin do something together in his honor.

That would be nice. Those guys sure could blend well.

What I also find fascinating about them is that back when they started they sang absolutely NO falsetto. And that then became their trademark sound~ singing almost every note of a song in falsetto.

THE BEE GEE'S RULED IN THIER DAY! NOTHING WAS BETTER THEN THE MUSIC FROM SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER.
BUT TIME HAS TAKEN IT'S TOLL ON THE BROTHERS "G", STARTING WITH ANDY'S OVERDOSE. I THINK THAT EFFECTED THEM MORE THEN ANYONE KNOWS. THEN THE OTHER DEATH, HOW SAD.
SOME OF MY FAVORITES ARE "NIGHTS ON BROADWAY" AND " MESSAGE TO YOU."
    OUTSTANDING MUSIC!!

    A new flame...
My latest infatuation from across the pond...James Blunt.
His vocal range reminds me of Mick in many ways, he's an amazing
songwriter and musician, plus he's like, a total hottie. hehe
And so sensitive and vulnerable! He can cry on my shoulder
    any time.

I hope Mick doesn't mind me having a torrid affair with Mr. Blunt.

and the songs Closer than close, Alone,And the sun will shine.

Yippee. I'm going to see Robbie Williams in December. :D

I know it is a bit early and I always say I refuse to buy tickets so early, but hey, you can't pass up early release tickets for this man. He is such an entertainer.

I'm so looking forward to it. Yes a stadium concert.
