In Quentin Tarantino's 'Pulp Fiction', Samuel L. Jackson's character says he plans to retire from the gangster life and walk the earth - quote - "like Caine in 'Kung Fu'". Well, it should come as no surprise, then, that Tarantino cast the actual Caine from 'Kung Fu', the spectacular David Carradine, in the title role of his latest opus, 'Kill Bill: Vol. 2'. To learn more, I caught up with David Carradine for a bit of a chat.

AMANDA KELLER: How did 'Kill Bill' come about? Were you a Quentin Tarantino fan?

DAVID CARRADINE: I don't know if you could call me a fan. I'm not much of a fan of anybody. But certainly I was aware of him and I knew that he could be a valuable director for me, like he was for John Travolta. And I had actually been told by a psychic that I needed to work with him. And so I found him - we were at a film festival in Toronto and I tracked him down at his hotel and said we should meet and he said, "OK." And I just told him - I said, "A psychic said we're supposed to work together."

AMANDA KELLER: You've got a huge body of work. You've made something like 90 films. Is it annoying that people say that Quentin Tarantino rescued you?

DAVID CARRADINE: Yeah. But, you know, there is an element of, uh ... a renaissance. You know, it's like ... you know, the Renaissance basically consisted of great works of art that were buried that they dug up and rediscovered, and that's what caused the Renaissance. So I guess I'm a great work of art that had been buried. Still in good shape, though.

AMANDA KELLER: Very nicely preserved. Throughout the years, what's the work you're most proud of?

DAVID CARRADINE: At this point, pretty much 'Kill Bill'. And, you know, I did a couple of films that were probably being watched for many years - 'The Long Riders', the Western I did with my brothers. So those are the high points, I think. Well, of course, 'Kung Fu' - we left that out.

DAVID CARRADINE: And I remember I was with Barbara Hershey and fans would come up and they'd ask for my autograph and I would kind of go like that. You know, and she said, "You know, I think they'd really like it if you smiled or something, "instead of, you know, looking like they'd attacked you." You know, I mean, I had enough athletic smarts. I'm a gymnast. I'm almost an acrobat. But Asian martial arts was an entirely new idea to me. But I was a dancer - I was a trained dancer - and I was a fencer. It was easy for me to perform the choreography - which is mostly what you see in movies, is they teach somebody these moves specifically for the routine. But that grew on me, and then I started studying formally, and I still am. And, you know, this 'Kill Bill' thing, even though it's a martial arts movie, I don't do very much martial arts in it. I trained with everybody, and, you know, I got really good with the samurai sword.

AMANDA KELLER: And now you're a legend to a whole new generation of men - you pashed Uma.

DAVID CARRADINE: Yeah, actually, she kissed me. I had to play a little bit of a stone face, because when she kisses me, I'm fully aware of the fact that I'm just about to shoot her in the head a couple of minutes later. So I didn't really get to enjoy it that much, but I did enjoy working with Uma. She's a real class act. And Tarantino is more fun than you can imagine to work with. He works you really hard. It's gruelling. And this is a very long shoot. But you enjoy every second of it. He has an awful lot of fun and he transmits that to you. And you're also aware of the fact that you're doing some really good stuff. And he's so radical and strange. I like that too.
