    the fighter and the loss
This was forwarded to me by Sally Hall, who said that Mike Reilly wrote it. I am reprinting it here

He had fought his heart out. He trained hard; he had a good strategy. He lifted weights, ran miles, controlled his diet. He ignored his girl, missed work, neglected his family. Nothing mattered but that fight. In the end he came up short. A loss. All that work just to be defeated. His opponent rejoiced in the ring along with fans who cheered the failure. The walk back to the locker room seems long and arduous. All he wanted was to have those few minutes back, to reverse time, the outcome. "It can't be over" his heart cried, "it can't be." But it was over. In the back, this big man who plays a violent sport fought the welling tears in his eyes. He looked at his coaches and friends and said the most unnecessary words ever spoken; "I'm sorry guys, I'm sorry."

I have never seen a fighter lose who didn't say those same words; didn't feel the same hollowness. The fight was over; the work was over and in it's place there was nothing. All the possibilities of what could have happened vanish and all that is left is what did happen. Reality in stark naked fact, devoid of hopes and dreams. A cold marker of a time that went awry.

Before a fight you have everyone around you building you up. All the training all the commitment coming to this point. The Apex of your efforts. Here is the excitement of the event. Here is the fear of what is risked. You body, your name, your team are put on the line. You know stepping through that cage you are risking serious bodily harm. You may never step out the same way again. Then it is over and all you bring with you is the memory of defeat.

We can be grateful for the lessons we reap in defeat. For in those lessons lay the heart of brotherhood, of fellowship, of trial and of change. These are lessons the fans never see. At recent fight I looked into the eyes of a fighter telling me he was sorry. He feared he had let me down; that he had failed somehow. Sorrow pooled in his eyes. There was no physical pain; at least none that he would acknowledge. But his heart was breaking, teetering on shattering. Through his tear filled vision he could only see his failure.

From where I stood I could only see his bravery, commitment and desire. A warrior fresh from battle wears no shame. There are clothed in the glory of the effort. I can see all the things they should be proud of. All the things they have gained in the journey and earned from the battle. The trick is how do you make them see it?

Where no other eyes can see; those who put that fighter on their shoulders are the ones who pick him up off the ground. He is embarrassed. He is kissed and he is reminded that he is loved, respected; that he is family. When the pain of the moment is passed the fighter can see what was really gained and what was lost.

What was lost in the end was a single contest. Short lived glory and transitory rewards. In the end the difference between winning and losing tends to be a thin margin for those who fought the battle. No one can deny that winning is better. But the truth is that winning is never as sweet as it is dreamed to be and defeat is not so bitter. What remains enduring is what was gained on the journey.

Every fight for a real fighter is a journey. Starting from the day the fight date is set. The time spent preparing for a fight is unique and separate from the fighter's day to day life. Time is more focused. With each step towards the destination intensity raises. Every moment is dedicated to preparation or mourned as opportunity lost. Along the way is your team mates, coaches and friends. Every encouraging word carries extra weight. Every pat on the back an embrace, every go a confirmation of fraternity. Every time a teammate spills blood with you; in that blood is a message of faith, love and respect. Each step represents a growing bond between the fighter and those who walk the road with him. And that bond remains win, lose or draw.

A great fighter lost the fight of his life. When it was over all he had left was respect. He had his youth, most of his health. He had made dozens of life long friends who loved him. That same night one of those friends won the fight of his life; but rather then celebrate he came to his brothers side; kissed his head and made sure his fallen brother knew he would never fall so far that he would not be picked up. When the dust settled it was hard to remember what he had in fact lost. What ever was lost was replaceable. What was gained is permanent and priceless.
In years from now those who fought the fights will not care who won. They will recall the laughter. They will remember those who stood by their side. As they pass on the stories and lessons of the path they walked they will be teaching others how to take the journey. The journey is where we reap the rewards. What happens at the destination takes care of itself. But no destination is final; the journey is unending.

The fans only get to see the destination. They do not walk the path with the fighters. What they see is simple, short and packaged for their enjoyment. They can never understand journey. In the end that is for the best. For what is true, lasting and noble is for the fighter and the fighter alone.
