    Mick's Smooth FM Interview
Since it's all the buzz, thought I'd start a new topic for everyone to comment on it. I just had a listen myself. One of the best interviews he's done in a long time--focused on the MUSIC and not so much on the personal life--just enough touch to keep it interesting. I'm glad the man's happy and staying true to himself.

*blushes* And yes, I was quite tickled when he said Pete was what made the current lineup complete. I can refer you to other examples of his work--he is an excellent drummer and adds a lot to any ensemble.

I suppose I should go look at the official site now??? :D I confess I spend a lot more time HERE these days...:devil

Yes, a great interview indeed. He seems relaxed and happy and I too loved the cooment about Pete. What a wonderful thing to say and an honor for Pete. Shannon~I would love to know of other things Pete has played on.

I just love to hear Mick tell it in his own words~ what the music means to him, how he strives to make the best music out there, and how he continues to love what he does. He has a true gift and has done his best to use it to it's full potential.

    peace~

    Pete's stickwork
    Well, Angie, I personally own:

Courtney Pine, 'To The Eyes Of Creation'--tracks "Eastern Standard Time" and "What Goes Around". (Steve played on "Redemption Song" as well.) Excellent light jazz album all 'round, but "EST" is my favorite by far, it's just Pete, some bouncy bass, and various solos, breakneck groove.

Phillip Bent, 'The Pressure'--"Swing It" (w/Steve; Steve was with another drummer on "James" and "Phillip's Blues").
Phillip's a killer jazz flutist; nice tasteful hip-hop influence to this one.

Tim Finn, 'Before & After'--four tracks with Steve--"Hit The Ground Running", "Can't Do Both", "Always Never Now", "Walk You Home"
Nice pop with this one, though I will confess I like Neil Finn's (Crowded House) songwriting a touch better.

Tony Remy, 'Boof!'--drums on "Reginald Miller", "Geraldine", "Our Love Grows", and "'Tro". Programming on "Fewtcha Funk". More good jazz fusion.

Vibraphonic--three full albums with them, 'Vibraphonic 2', 'On A Roll', and 'A Vibraphonic Christmas'. All excellent jazz albums and definitely worth picking up.

Acoustic Alchemy, 'AArt'--"Wish You Were Near", "Tuff Puzzle", "Senjo Wine" (LOVE THIS!!!), and "Code Name Pandora". More upbeat than a typical AA album but a kick-ass listen.

Eurythmics, 'Peace'--played with Steve on "17 Again", "Power To The Meek", "Anything But Strong", and "I Want It All". Played with another bassist on "Peace Is Just A Word" and "I've Tried Everything".

Amy Studt, 'False Smiles'--only two tracks here but one has a good SR pedigree. "Gonna Be Fine" was written, programmed, mixed, and produced by Steve and Pete, they play on it, and it also features their older brother Ian on guitar (!), and Dave Clayton on piano!! "Going Out Of My Mind" was written by Steve and Pete, and Pete did drum programming for it.

Emma Bunton, 'Free Me'. Yes, she is also formerly known as Baby Spice, but this album actually isn't too bad. One track here, "Something So Beautiful", featuring all three Lewinson brothers again on their respective instruments. Steve and Pete get writer, producer, instrumentation, and programming credits.

Oh, and how can I forget Sade's 'Lovers Live' DVD?? A MUST-OWN, it's BRILLIANT!!!!

That should get you started. For more, I can e-mail you a Word document with his full (to my knowledge) studio credits. (Have one on Steve, too, as you might guess.) :D

Still working on those band member links too.

Wow Shannon~ that is an amazing list. I used to be so much more into staying up on things like that but with kids your time gets shifted about and you somehow lose touch with things you once had time for. There are a few in there that I would love to pick up and listen too. Thanks for the "library" !

Just the tip of the iceberg!!
You're welcome. I really spend more time on this than I ought to. *laughs*

In doing the band member links, came across ANOTHER release I didn't know about...really obscure Japanese album, could only find it on Amazon Japan--but I don't read a lick of Japanese and wouldn't have a clue how to order on there!!! But the collector's bug has officially bitten me in the a$$ again. Tell me it's an out-of-print import? I just see a challenge waiting to be taken on. :devil

(C'mon, Pete's on the COVER!!! Worth it just for that unique occurrence alone. *laughs*)

I need to dig through my old receipts from when I was going gonzo ordering SR stuff back in the day...there was one dealer I worked with that was good at getting Japanese releases. I wonder if they're still in business.

By the way, what are you doing up??? Oh, right, morning jog. :D

Me...never went to bed. My sleep schedule always gets yutzed when I'm sick. And I'm on RA duty tonight. Hip hip hooray.

I was wondering what YOU were doing up. I guess I am not the only insane person up at this hour!

Yes~ the run, did 8 miles this morning. It's a bit cold out there this morning

So any rowdy parties on your floor last night! What are you gettig your masters in ~ music??? How fun. I loved college back when I did it but woudn't want to go back now. Good for you for being a "nontraditional" student. Isn't that what they call those who don't go right away out of high school :)

Funny about the Japanese album. I have a feeling that you will, in the future tell us you have procured it! Have fun on the hunt for it :D

I'm back to bed~ I always hop back in atfter my run and "nap" until the girls get up :)

    Have a great day everyone~

I'll be hitting the hay myself soon...
To clarify...the duty is TONIGHT, Tuesday night, upcoming. I'll be nice and sleep drunk for it, looks like. :-(

I'll bet it's cold out...it's been pretty nippy here in the Windy City...

Rowdy parties--well, no, but it WAS pretty loud for a while--I'm an RA on the guys' floor and they were watching WWE. The residents I'm in charge of are all learning disabled/developmentally delayed--it's a non-traditional post-secondary program for students who can't do an actual degree.

It makes for interesting times. I have pictures that still make me laugh 'til I cry. :D

The masters'? Actually a dual-concentration Psych degree (cultural and organizational); "practical" stuff so I hopefully get a decent job to pay off all this debt I'm under. But I'd RATHER be doing recording tech!!! :devil

Thanks for the kind thoughts though, I figured late was better than never, got too frustrated working retail and similar. And you do have the term correct. I don't do ANYTHING by the book!!

And thanks for the encouragement on that album...my persistence in research is where the "Detective/Private Investigator" nicknames came from. (Saved my bum in my undergraduate Psych major too. :-D )

Haven't gone wrong with any of Pete's projects yet. Kenji plays on that one too, if I got my info right. It'll be worth the hunt.

Well done interview, it's just so good to have a connection now after feeling like the SR site "went away", talking about the band, talking about the music, no cheap shots or questions....smoothe, interesting, real.

Pete's mention was great as well as DAVE's mention about his imput and ideas that sparked the music to take it to the top.

If you've followed all the audio and printed interviews, you'd know this is not new information, but how great to have ALL the information in most of the recent interviews included in this relaxed, personal, friendly conversation like you are just sitting with them, having a glass of wine and having the luck of being asked to join them during their visit, just sitting on the couch in the same room with our favorite serial killer.

Just testing you to see if you listened to the entire interview.....

What's great is that there isn't a lot of interruption during the interview, good questions, and if you've been "tuning in to the interviews" over the past year, the replies are consistent, and great to hear live conversation.

And yes, everyone is interested because we are all lovers of Simply Red music, and this interview was about THE MUSIC and the ARTISTS.

    Love,
    Lin xx

I know the information is stuff that's been going around for a while, but yes, he was much more relaxed, and the interviewer helped put him there. He let Mick guide where the conversation went, so any personal matters that were discussed were ones Mick WANTED to discuss. So he opened up maybe a bit more about certain topics than he's done previously.

I'm contrasting this one to, say, the Jensen programme, where that guy was clearly trying to get under Mick's skin and he was getting visibly agitated. And there were too many questions/comments on the personal stuff, which always winds him up.

Do I follow the press like I used to? I'll confess I don't, because a lot of it IS overlap, and because everything I want/need to know I can find out through my personal SR network--the website and my friends.

Plus I guess I've read/heard soooooo many interviews with Mick over the years that I can kinda predict his answers to everything. It's more interesting for me now to explore the backgrounds of the band members, not much is known about them--and as far as I'm concerned, their contribution to the sound is just as valuable. So I keep myself busy with that. *shrug* It's an individual thing. For every varied influence SR has, so too are the fans varied. Every one of us takes something different home from the music and the fandom. I think that's a good thing. :-D

    Micks radio interview
    Hello to you all.

Does anyone have a transcript of what was said on the recent interview.

My computer wont let me onto the interview.

    Thanks.

Hi everyone. I do agree with your comments. It was an interesting relaxed interview. As well and good content. Yes, we must have a serial killer in our midst.

    Sorry I don't have a transcript.

    Cheers

    Pat

Hello Guest, we don't have one, but if you go load "Real Player" to your computer, you will be able to hear lots of interviews, music, see videos and you will be so glad you did !

Best of Luck to you, it's easy, if I can do it, you can too...

    Misc. business
Sorry, I don't have a transcript either...and don't anticipate having a huge chunk of time to do one, either, or I'd totally do it. Maybe I'll set aside a few minutes each day and try and do it in chunks or something. That is, if the RealPlayer download doesn't solve your problem. :-D

And update on that CD: after a fruitless search through domestic dealers specializing in imports (my old buddy Chuck at World Party Music shut his doors!!! *sobs*), gave up and dragged my way through an order at Amazon Japan. They do offer English pages...but they're not TOTALLY converted over...it's a good thing I know the interface well (Amazon.com junkie here! Best place to snag college textbooks cheap!!), I was able to navigate a lot that way, just knowing where key buttons are...:devil :devil :devil

Raise your hand if you think credit cards are evil. :D  :D
