    Concert Moments to Remember
While some of the concerts you went to are still fresh in your minds, please share some of the memories with us...for example....

    Songs that "stood out"
How the band interacted with each other
    The Stage Setting/ Decoration/ Atmosphere
Did your show have the Cuban dancers/ singer ?
How the concert hall or arena sounded/acoustics/noise.
What was the encore song ?
Was everyone around you dancing or seated ?

Consider all and any comments !! Even your cold wait before & after.

For those of us who did not attend a concert and
who cannot even get the CUBA DVD yet, it would be great to hear all...

    Thanks,
    Love,
    Lin xx

    Hi Lin,
Well one of the most special concerts I've seen last year is the secret showcase I won tickets for in Gent on December 1st.
Only 250 people we're present so it was a very small gig.
8 of the 250 people we're Dutchies so we we're very lucky to have won the tickets as only 50 people in Holland had the chance of winning them.
Before the concerts a lot of bandmembers came into the room we all we're waiting and took photo's with lots of people and gave signatures.
The concert was GREAT as you can imagine, we we're standing at the front row so we had the time of our life!
One of the guards tried to stop the public from making pictures but Mick
tapped him on the shoulder to let him know everyone could make as much pictures as they wanted. lol
You can understand that the gig in Arnhem a week later wasn't so special as this one! (with a crowd of 34.000 people!)
So this concert always will be a very special memory for me!!
    Love Yolanda :top :balloon

Sounds like a night to remember, Yolanda ('though actually every Simply Red concert is a night to remember). Only 250 people - that sounds absolutely intimate. I'm sure that this is the perfect atmosphere for all these accoustic tracks of the last tour.
The smallest Simply Red event I ever went to was the Convention 2000 with about 1,000 people I think. Yeah, there was something in the air.
As Mick had a very strange weekend before we didn't even believe he would appear that night... but he did and he was very chatty as if he had to let off steam. During this interview he sang Holding Back The Years in a way that I will NEVER forget.
Such a pity we never saw the promised Convention video :hae Even the transcript of the interview which Elaine set online a few weeks later seemed to be shortened ... one could say censored

OK, the memories of that night aren't very up-to-date... but they are still soooo strong.

Quick and dirty answers to your questions from our gigs, Sheffield and Birmingham:

Songs that stood out, for me anyway: Sad Old Red and Fairground. The first showed off just how awesome our band members are (particularly at Sheffield!!), and the second--the slow intro gets everyone warmed up, then when Pete does the three-kick transition to the uptempo part, it's like uncorking champagne--everyone lets loose!!! :D

Band interaction--they love working together, you can tell--lots of eye contact, a little bit of chatter, smiles all 'round. From my biased viewpoint :D , Steve was having the most fun--wandered around the stage both nights, interacting with everyone individually (including the strings!), but especially with Ian, Dave, and Pete. At Sheffield, he was actually playing around--stood smack in front of Ian's keyboard while he was behind it playing his sax...and kept bouncing at him on the 1-3 with this insane grin on his face!!! Ian looked like he was gonna lose it. :devil

Stage setting: *sigh* It looked alright but made getting decent pictures impossible. Heavy black curtains as base and various overlays throughout the show. Big antiquey type picture and "Habana" sign at one point, big circles with dim lights in them at another...mostly subdued lighting with an occasional colorful outburst. The stage design was a bit off, things seemed kinda crowded. The strings were all lined up in a row at the back, just slightly elevated, behind a clear acoustic shield. Dave's baby grand took up half the stage on the right side, if you were sitting over there, Pete was blocked from view entirely. They could have arranged it better to give everyone more room.

No dancers or other musicians. Just our familiar SR tearin' it up.

Acoustics were brilliant at both places for an arena setting. The strings really jumped well, and the sound mix was good, you could hear everyone.

Three encores for each show--"Fairground", "Something Got Me Started", and "If You Don't Know Me By Now". (Same for both)

Took a while for everyone to get up and dancing, maybe 5 or 6 tracks in, but once they were up, they were up. I think I was doing more yelling and screaming than those around me though. Part of the evidence is on the Sheffield Instant Live set. :devil

Wait after...lots of people complaining about the cold but I didn't think it was too bad. But I am a crazy Midwesterner. *laughs* MY main gripe was how sore my feet were from my tall heels and standing so long in 'em!!!

OK, that's the short version. Gotta run, maybe I'll fill it out more another time. :-D

Thanks everyone for so much detail, I loved reading all of it !!
Of course I am drooling, imagining being there with you all.....

Gee, and that small intimate gathering, and what luck !!!

Listening to the radio interview was fantastic, hope people are still peeking into the SR site so they don't miss goodies like that one...

Oh I love all the details! I am so wanting to see them. I mentioned Dresden in August to hubby tonight. He didn't freak! I was shocked. I could see a bit if interest in his eyes. He is a big SR fan as well. I told him maybe a early 10th anniversay present~ this year is 9 :) So I will keep working on him and keep you all posted.

Liz was fine. She did get sick of my b****ing though!!! :D See, when I knew we would be doing an extended amount of walking, I wore sneaks. But I was dressed to impress at the shows, and as they say, "when in Rome, do as the Romans do", so when we were calling the boys out for their encore, I was stomping the hell out of the floor like everyone else. But I paid for it later. *laughs*

    Paris was a great show.........
Havana was spectacular...as it was a show for dvd, so it had an extra edge to it..all be it more staged,it is still worthy of a golden moment.

Sheffield and Nottingham were brilliant. Sheffield because got to meet mick after the show and those lovely American gals! And Nottingham because we got to get up on our feet from the moment they came on stage and I was at the front for both of them! My lucky year!
Fairground was the best song from both nights definitely.

    Sounds wonderful Adele!

Can anyone here give recommendations as to which concert I attend this summer in Europe? I have never been abroad but since the band isn't coming across the pond I figured I take myself to them. Am working on DH to get the green light.

So what do you think? Where the best place for me to go :)

Saw Hillary's post about Paris, sounded great, as for Cuba, the DVD still has not been released by the Canadian manufacturer for sale, so we are all deprived over here....I am trying to cancel my order because it it now available in our format in the SR Shop.....

What about the large fences we heard about in Paris ? So many people wrote about the Ireland shows being great and also Glasgow...

Wouldn't it have been fun to have tickets to all the shows, just to see and hear the different playlists, and different moods, and magic ?

Thanks everyone for posting, and I am still trying to get more people to join this site so we can all keep in touch...

Adele--was good meeting up with you too! Longer chat next time, eh what??? 8)

Where to go in Europe? Not sure, I've not been to the Continent before...doing Holland this summer, I'll see how that goes. (I'll have good company, that at least is certain. ) I've heard good things about gigs in Hamburg and Koln (Cologne)...don't know what the open-air venues are like though. Will defer to the "locals" on this one. Everybody pipe up, don't be shy. :D

On canceling that order, Lin, you might want to e-mail Alison at the shop and make sure SHE'S not having the same trouble with supply before you do anything. She may not be able to get it yet either.

Could always get a wild hair and buy a multi-region DVD player--you can get them for as low as $80 these days. Then you could just get the PAL/Region 2 versions. I'm seriously contemplating that anyway, there's a few things I can only get Region 2 that I'm after...

Hell, what's another component? My A/V setup already has a formidable snarl of wiring. *laughs*

Seeing every show...well, we'd certainly gain an appreciation for what our band puts themselves through to play for us!!! Just seeing two shows back to back wore me out...*laughs* But it would be good to maybe get vids of all the shows for just the reasons you mentioned--different set lists, different crowd vibes, different band attitudes and performances...the things that make each show special.

    vienna, dec 3rd 2005 -
hi all, here's my review on the show in vienna dec 3rd. some of might know it already, but still i put it on...

slowly - 24 h after the show - I'm coming back down to earth.
the show was fabulous, unbelievable superlatively, enormous, terrific - out of anything I've ever seen before wonderful! ok ok, you see I'm still not REALLY here :-)
try to start at the beginning (sorry in advance for any typos)
I won this two extra tickets on the radio a few days before the show and the guy on the phone told me to pick them up two hours earlier. so i was there with the two people I passed the tickets on to (I of course had mine for month already!). the two lucky winners were my boyfriend and my 13 year old niece who should attend her first concert ever. going towards the counter I met Ian freezing on his way to the shop to get cigarettes. had a short chat with him, greeted him for michi and off we were in. this bloody counter wasn't open yet. time went by, we went up and down waiting. the others already waited at the other side of the hall and I knew I wouldnt make it anymore to the meeting point in time. got totally angry. finally, only a few minutes before the doors opened the two "ladies" also opened up their counter and slowly started to sort their lists of names and the tickets. I thought I'd go through these glass walls.... got the free tickets and learned they were not for the standing area -where we had our tickets for - but for the seated one. boyfriend realised my mood, took my niece and brought her to her seat even he had to get off for work for an hour. we - doris, my sister - and me rushed in and met the others - helga, andrea (violet), claudia and sue - who had made it to the front row and reserved some space for us. great, we were in on time. it was quarter to seven and we knew we'd have to wait here for at least two hours before simply red would be on stage. the well known going-to-the-loo-two-by-two-that-the-others-can-defend-the-space actions started. in the seated area not many people were there by that time, so we quickly made out my niece who sat up there all allone. sister desided to get her down to us, went over to some of the guards and told them bout her poor daughter who attended her first concert ever, sitting up there on her own etc. etc. one of the guards thought that was not nice and unfair, and allowed that she could come down to be with us, even the standing area was sold out. niece jumped over the barrier and down she was. welcomed her to the front row with a loud hurray! (beeing at your first concert and stand front row for sure is something special I think, and I'm happy we had her there!) by the time the support act started with some austrian rap with depressed lyrics each of us had their troubles. one needed to go to the loo but had no chance anymore to get out, the other was hungry, the third was thirsdy and I for myself had a terrible ache in my back and just wanted to sit or lay down. singer of support act had a nice voice, but people were waiting for mick's voice, so we politely clapped at the end of each song but applauded enthusiastically when she finally told us this would be their last song ;-)
lights went on again, piano got cleaned (dave gets a clean piano in vienna in opposite to dana glover two years ago.. he he) and another 30 minutes passed on untill the lights finally went down for THE SHOW. first song was again "a song for you", second "for your babies" and andrea and me were soo proud of our vienniese fellows. singing along from the first line. mick thanked it with "oh, thats beautiful" - second line : "even more beautiful" at the first chorus he was standing right infront of us, looked into my nieces eyes while singing "..but in you.. i do". i cant tell you the exact track listing, but it was all there... had eye contact two times myself wich was magic as well (ok, ok, ok, I might be the one calling mick "the voice" and not "the body" and I might sometimes not really talk nice about his looks now and then, BUT when he locks his eyes to mine while singing "only you alone can quench this here thirst"-night nurse - and "i will always love you" -fake- than I have to confess I didn't care bout all that I might have said before ;-))))))
one time while dancing like mad I put my arm a bit too far back, and at the move back i suddenly stuck in a strangers nose.. oh my, i did not even dare to turn around for saying sorry. hope the poor guy is ok...
the band seemed to enjoy each and every minute even there seemed to be some problems with the technic. ian had to get his headphones changed, mick was waving towards the technicias to put guitar down, dee as well made strange signs towards the technic table.
at some of the faster songs it was an unbelievable moving up there: pete on drums moving everything his body was able to move, dave jerking at the piano like mad, dee and sarah dancing, the horny horns up n down, left n right with their instruments, ian on front of stage giving everything at a solo and mick one time on his knees, next second jumping, third conducting the band. the climax was even more climaxing that at the last show I've seen (well, the austrians went much more wild than the people in the albert hall, so the band gave speed and action in return much earlier as well).
after 1,45h they went off to come back on with fairground. again this genius version went through and through. we also got sgms and then mick asked "well, shall we play you one more?" 10.000 people responded with "no thanks mick, we had enough!" and off they went.
    - erm, no sorry that was out of my nightmare! of course we wanted to get one more, so we all sang "if you don't know me by now" together.
now they were really off. when the lights went on again it took some time to realise where we were - no it was not heaven, it was still vienna, but vienna was on cloude no. nine it that moment. everyone passing me by had the same silly but already typical post-simply-red grin on his face. everyone no matter how old, if girl, boy, lady or gentleman. everyone was sweating like after a marathon but lucky. also everyone was thrisdy so there were masses of people at the stalls to get something wet down the dry throat. andrea tried to get the setlist from the stageworkers but had no luck. so doris and claudia found something else to give her instead: they were out at the toilet and found a list from the cleaning personell when they cleaned the toilets. now we know at what times violetta (ivanovic??) was there to keep the loo clean for s.r. :-))))
we went back to the stage entrance, wich is next to a mexican restaurant. got some coronas out, sat down on a bank, some on the floor chatting and waiting if we'd meet someone. Ian came out, we all called him at the same time, so he came over. Looked at me, smiled and said a friendly "oh, hi" guess he thought "you again, hm.." as always he was patient with our cameras (hope pictures came out well-not my camera this time) and took some little time to chat with us. while this chat my sister doris was the only one looking in the direction of stage door. saying - not especially loud - "hey folks, theres mick". (a bit louder) "fooolks, theres mick". (even more louder) "hey foolks, theres miick!". this was the moment i realised what she said, turned round and saw a black coat and a red head disappearing towards the garage. Ian still smiled in his special way and I asked him to greet mick and say "thanks for this show" in our names. if he did so?? steve also came along and i had the chance to ask him about sister. (some of you might ike to know as well) baby desided to arrive on this planet a bit later. they await it's arrival next week now.
as at the last gig in vienna they were looking for the right way out to the bus, and instead of stopping them and ask them to sign things I told some of the other band members the way and off they went towards budapest, where they play in this minute and I hope the fans in budapest will enjoy the show just as we all did.
thought it could not be possible anymore, but this bunch of full-blooded musicians manage to become better and better at each show. this was definately the best gig I've ever seen!
us ladies and girl stayed infront of the bar for two more beers and lots of chatting and laughing, with a little ashtray infront of us on the floor before we finally left the hall at abt. 1.15 a.m.
got hungry, went for a sausage and home. as my neighbour also joined us for the beers, we went up to my flat to show her the convention pictures and some other s.r. stuff. (it was her first show as well). went to bed at 3.30 a.m. but was so high that i was still awake when my boyfriend came home from work at 5 a.m.
he stayed up in the seated area and enjoyed his first s.r. show as well. his first words at home were : "this man's got a voice!!!! unbelievable!!" he he baby, I KNOW! today I asked him if there were songs he didn't know and the dry answer was: of course not, I'm living with YOU! :-) I'd say mission succsesfully fullfilled! two more people realised how unique, special, great unbelievable full of energy, perfect, full of joy and power, and ..... AAAAHHHHHHHHH WHOW YIEEEHAAAAA this band is when playing live :-)
did I say Im down to earth again at the beginning of this review????

    :-))))

I'm lost in space again, so if i missed out something my fellow austrians, please feel free to add! love you all, and it becomes more fun with you at each show, just like s.r. get better, you all do as well :-)

Mo~ what a wonderful report! Thank you so much for sharing it with us. Maybe I'll have to come to Salzburg this July and take it all in!

I'm wondering how do you all get such wonderful seats so close to the front????

    Re: Concert Moments to Remember

    Mo - 11.01.2006, 13:47

the shows in austria do usually have a standing and a seated area.
standing: infront of stage (except graz three years ago where we were fenced somewhere in the back :( )
seated: left n right of stage and behind the standing a.

for the last shows I've been at we were lucky to make it to the front row by beeing at the hall before doors open and then run in :-)
only thing is that you have to stay where you are for hours before the show starts, but guess everyone will confirm that it's worth it!! :-D

I've been in london for one show in the albert hall in october, wich was seated. whow was i disappointed of the british audience! (except some of the well known reddies who managed to get some others moving).
    1) realising hbty only at the first line (I'm used to a loud cheer at the first NOTE!)
    2) same with sad old red
    3) only got up to dance sooooooometime while violet and me were already jumping up in our little tier box
    .....

so if you wanna dance from the first note to the last, come over and join us :D

    Hi Mo!
Welcome on board, my dear friend! :hug
This report is absolutely great. I absolutely enjoyed reading it. Hey, it seems your niece has got the "virus" too now 8)

I took my two sisters with me when I went to Cologne last november. They were really sceptic about the concert before. Maybe I have to explain that my sisters are about 10 to 12 years older than me and they seem to think that I have a strange taste of music  ...oh yes, I would probably listen to Eminem, 50 Ct, Franz Ferdinand and ... (I dunno what else) ... and they would definitely not :D
However they both enjoyed the show almost like myself :D 8) ... only the support act didn't do it for us ... ahem that's for all of us in the huge KölnArena. They didn't get catcalls but they neither got a big applaus. I just wonder who picks out the support act?!?

    Re: Concert Moments to Remember

    Mo - 11.01.2006, 18:41

thanks for the warm welcome my dear!
    :hug
you put up a real great substitute forum! congratulations for that!

i wonder myself who picks up those support acts.. in london we missed it, as we knew we had our seats anyway and only came to the hall in time.
but also i somehow feel for them supporters, I mean it has to be quite devastating playing infront of a croud you know just waits till youre off stage again.

    Re: Concert Moments to Remember

    simplymichi - 11.01.2006, 19:46

In Germany we had Nadia Benaissa (not sure about her name?!)as support act. She's one of the girls from "No Angels", you might remember them?! Do I need to say more???
Yes, she has a nice voice and she can sing. But that's it already. She's far away from being a great singer like Mick or all of her idols. The songs were pretty boring and some even a lil annoying. That's not a big compliment, is it?
They (the No Angels) did a big mistake: they split up and now each of the five more or less talentless girls try to start a solo career.

Talking about support acts! The best support before a Simply Red concert that I have seen was Cunnie Williams in Essen (Sept. 1999) ... I even grabbed his snippets-cassette and played it on my way home, while I was stuck in a traffic jam. Next day I even bought his album :D He was cool 8) sounded a bit like Barry White and he was unbelievable tall (imagine me -only about 1,50m- standing in front of the stage looking up to that 2-meter-something guy  WOW!)
I wonder what happened to him?!? I think Mousse T. was his producer at that time.

In my case (for two seated shows), it was coordinating with the first friend I went with exactly what seats were acceptable, then being up at 3 am pre-registered with getLive.co.uk and Ticketmaster UK to jump straight on with a broadband connection for the SR.com presale. Fast clicking. Much grumbling. Squeal of joy when seats just four rows back in the floor section we wanted came up for BOTH shows!! :D

Sometimes dumb luck helps too. A second friend (Knokkak) joined Liz (Rose Tattoo) and I later on...she managed 1st tier side seating for Sheffield, but was 20 rows back on the floor in our section for Birmingham. Then lo and behold, someone on the old boards posted that someone had dropped out of her group of four going to the same gig, would anyone like the ticket? Turned out it was fourth row like ours, but instead of stage right, it was CENTER SECTION!! She said the view was phenomenal. :top

    So, to sum up: Good interpersonal connections with SR nuts, a functional broadband connection, and a touch of insanity will get you everywhere. :-}

Awwwhhhhh WOWEE Mo, what a fantastic report, I felt like my feet were hurting and my back was dying right along with you !!!

Your details were just what we were all praying for...now we can say we went with you to the concert.

You know I think the concerts are MUCH BETTER where you are and that everyone is warmer, friendlier, and better concert people !!

I hate to read about some of the "stalkers" who have not respected the rest of the crowd and screamed all night at the footlights of the stage, ruining it for everyone around them, instead of dancing and enjoying the music !!

The Dutchies were very lucky to have been to 2 television show tapings and even in the front row !! I think the band was much more comfortable too with them, knowing that the fans were respectful of them.

I don't think that would happen here, it's like some fans "gotta get something" more than the music.... they are individual people like the rest of us who lend us their talents during their performances.

You were so lucky to have met some of the band !!!

Thanks again for this wonderful concert "snapshot".....

    Love to you,
    Lin+Mark xxx

    By the way...
We do not have "standing" concerts here, all tickets sold are for seated concerts, we also do not have what they call "festival seating" where you run to the front when they open the doors or gates.

In the early 1970's there was a concert with the "Who" with this kind of seating (a famous sad incident) when after the doors were openned up there were 19 people killed by people running over them !!! Awful...

Sort of like the "Running of the Bulls" in Spain.

Where to go to in Summer? @nightnurse
Of course you should come to Bonn :) Despite that it is the place where I live there is a great atmosphere on the "Museumsmeile" - I loved it in 2003. Only standing places - maybe that's an argument too and the place for the fan-meeting before (hi Eva!!!) ist nice to have something to eat and to talk.

    Any questions :D ?

Yes >Bonn 2003< maybe the best concert experience I've ever had! Do you remember how we all shouted "YES, I WOULD" ... I bet the Kölner Dom in Cologne shook his hips  ...oh, and do you remember the heat?!?!
I'm looking forward to Simply Red in Bonn 2006!

    Bonn 2003
Oh yes, I do remember! It was a wonderful hot day and I went to the concert by bike and when I left the concert it was still about 25 degrees Celsius - cannot be compared at all to the weather at the moment in Bonn *grrrr* Looking forward to meet you this year! I have to miss a course that day, I might loose a friend because I will not go to his 40th birthday party then and it's my sons' birthday the next day and I will have lots of people in the house but I am looking forward to August, 19th!

    Cologne February 2000
After having studied for about two years with no look right or left, no party and no fun and then failed a very hard exam  I got to know that Simply Red would play in Cologne - in february and it was the end of january

I tried several ways to get a ticket for the show - no chance :-( Only possibility was the internet - but you had to have a creditcard for that and I hadn't and there were less tickets. (Oh my goddess I really didn't believe that I would ever see SR in Cologne). During the next two days I spoke to nearly all my friends to find someone who would book that ticket for me. Guess some of them thought I was going mad so eagerly I wanted to see the show. LOL And finally I found one! And he agreed to book for me :-)

Happily I went to Cologne by train that day. Hadn't been so easy to take the afternoon off from work. But my boss had no choice coz I announced wheather he would like it or not I had to leave earlier that day because of SR :D I do not have any special rememberance of that concert in February 2000 in Cologne. I just know that some time during SR played I realised "Hey you are still alive! :top You are having fun and live can be wonderful." It was a great feeling, dancing and singing to all those wonderful songs, listening to the band - I really enjoyed myself after two years of not doing so. :D

This is my longest lasting expierence of a SR concert, even if all concerts I visited where great.
    Love, Sun

Btw I repeated the exam and tried to remember that feeling during the concert while studying. I did have more fun during the summer and what shall I say I passed

I remember that concert! A very special one for me too! I would have missed it if it wasn't for the internet
That concert was the third SR-concert for me. Before that I had seen Simply Red in Dortmund (1996) and in Essen (1999). Weeks before the Cologne concert I thought "why should I go again? you have seen that band only a few months before!"
On one hand I wanted to go... (had already asked my friend Nicole who lived in Cologne at the time whether she would join me) but on the other hand I thought "oh my gosh, that's soooo far to travel!" (roundabout 2½ hours by car) ... so I decided better not to go there.
And just a few days before the concert I was in chat on simplyred.com... chatting to someone who pretended to be Mick. I'm sceptical about his identity but he convinced me that I was wrong not going to that concert. So I had to think over.
First thing to recognize was that it was too late to get tickets via Internet (it was Friday or Saturday and the concert was already on Monday). Had some agitated nights and went to work like normal on Monday morning.

Yeah, and then I took courage, asked my boss if I could finish work early that day, had some lunch at home and drove to Cologne (without having a ticket yet). I knew it was risky but something told me that this was the abolutely right decision.
AND yes, yes, yes... I was lucky and got a ticket for that concert and 'cause I only needed a single ticket it was a pretty good one too.

The concert was absolutely fantastic. As far as I remember there wasn't a support act and they did a pretty long show (it was the first concert of the Spirit of Life-tour). I remember they had a small accoustic set (not sure about the songs though). And Mick sang Cold Sweat... for a moment while I closed my eyes I absolutely thought "is it Mick Hucknall or is it James Brown?"

Oh... and just the other day I made a big, big mistake! I wrote a pretty long e-mail-letter to my friend Nicole about the concert and how great it was. You know how excited you are just the day after
*gulp* She was a bit angry which I understood ... I could only say how sorry I am :whistle However, we are still friends
And in the end we both have seen two other Simply Red-concerts together (until now).

Maybe the maddest thing I ever did?!?

Oh ! Enjoyed reading this so much because if we travel to Europe this summer this is exactly what we will be doing if we get near enough to a scheduled concert along the way....

That was a good and brave impulse to just "get up and go" for you Michi and gives me hope to do the same thing....

I know I just have to do everything possible to make it happen.

    Love,
    Lin xx
