    distinctive part with unusual history
I am Christopher from Munich and hope someone can halp me with an aircraft part i inherited from my father.

My father in 1943 survived the crash of a Ju52 that hit Monte Cervellino in northern Italy due to too flying to low. We forty years later visited the area and were greeted with great hospitality of the townspeople. One of them gave an aircraft part to my father who always treasured it as a memory of "his" Ju 52.

I just recently examined the part closer and think it can´t be german but rather american:

On the "foot" is the number 1057285 and "ALCOA" for Aluminium company of America":

On one of the arms is this:

Could the "AN P22(?)" be an US Air Force inspection stamp? What could the other stamps mean?

    This is on the "head":

I would be very grateful if somebody could help me identifying this part.

    Hi chrismuc,

the inspector stamp (pic. 5 and 6) looks like "Douglas", maybe A-26

    Greetings Dirk

    Hi Christopher,

sadly I agree with Dirk
The letter "ALCOA" on one of the part is the name of the american manufacturer "Aluminium Cooperation of America".

I´m very sorry, that the people gave you not a part from a Ju-52...

    Regards
    Nils

Thanks guys, especially the hint from Dirk is quite valuable, the inspection sign indeed seems to be one from Douglas. On the aviation archeology website i spotted this:

said to belong to an A-26.

Close, but not identical, as the stamp on my part sports a p instead of an e.

Will try to ask some Douglas specialists

The only other aircraft going down known to me near the crash site (Monte Cervellino near Berceto) of the Ju52 is a Spitfire, certainly not what i am looking for.

My father would take it with a smile - it is just fitting this turns out to be a bit mysterious: It was a very interesting flight, also, as among the casualties was Josef Veltjens, fighter ace of WW1 and secret emissary to Mussolini. Rumors say there might have been sabotage or that the Junkers flew extra (and thus too) low to protect the important passenger from allied fighters sent out to target this particular aircraft.

Und soviel Deutsch muss sein: Danke Jungs, habt ihr gut gemacht!

    Christopher
