    Lt Scherer
Did you find the crash site?

I found this statement in armyairforce:

My Mother (deceased 1987) was married to a Fred Scherer, an American p-51 pilot. I have very little information and am not sure how accurate this info is. Here is what I remember
being told 35 years ago: Near the end of WW2 Fred Scherer was flying the rear of a vee formation in his p-51 Mustang. His squadron was returning from a mission or patrol over Germany. They were flying over rural German
    countryside. Several Messershmit (probably
109's) jumped the formation of p-51's, coming out of cloud cover from above and behind they hit Freds p-51 before he or any of his squadron could react. They were caught off guard. A couple of the other Mustangs took hits but were not seriously damaged. Freds plane was seen going down smoking and on fire into the German countryside. No parachute was observed to open as he went down. At this point the rest of the scattered formation of p-51's opened up the throttles and headed for base. I do not know why they did not turn and engage the Germans, but I am sure their was good reason for them not doing so.

The above account comes from the memory of what Mother told me in 1972 or 73. Her information on what had happened came in a letter written to her by Freds squadron leader
shortly after he was shot down. At the time she told me this I believe she had mentioned
his name and the names of a couple others in the squadron but they have become jumbled
in the thirty five plus years since hearing the story.

I know my mother was somewhat haunted over the years with Freds MIA status Which I believe was changed to KIA after the war even though at least until my mothers death in 1987
his remains had never been recovered or Identified. Also his dog tags were sent to her either by the war department or his squad leader and this bothered her because she said pilots never flew without their dog tags. mothers maiden name was
Dorothy Clark. I do not even know where she met Fred. Somewhere in Ohio, Colorado or Oregon Possibly.

Fred Scherers parents were living in Long Beach California in the late sixties and seventies. He was an only child. His father
passed away sometime in the early seventies.
I met his Mother in 1974 When my Mother and I drove from San Jose Ca to Long Beach. My mom had kept in contact with the Scherer's
Over the years but had not seen Mrs. Scherer in almost thirty years. Mrs Scherer had moved to a retirement community and wanted to give my mother some possesions that she did not have room for was the reason for the visit.

I don't even know if this is the Fred Scherer you seek info on. I have become more curious over the years about my parents pasts. Now
both my Mother and father (deceased in 1983)
are gone it is hard to get accurate information.
Guess I should have been more inqusitive in my youger years. If this is or could possibly
be the Fred Scherer you seek information on
i hope the vague account helps and like I said I am curious and would like to know more
    also.

My mother, on the rare occasions she did speak about Fred she would always say
that Fred had been the Nicest most considerate
and true person she had ever known.
