Interview mit Linde im "Total Guitar"
Im UK Magazin "Total Guitar" ist n Interview mit Linde drin.

    HIM

WITH NEW ALBUM DARK LIGHT LAMENTING ABOUT LOVE, OBSESSION, FAITH AND FEAR, TG ASKS THE FINNISH METALLERS FOR THEIR TAKE ON SEX, DRUGS AND ROCK 'N' ROLL....

It's a phrase synonymous with the backbone of rock. Reverberating like a mantra throughout decades worth of interviews, reviews and documentaries, 'sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll' perfectly encapsules the musical and sexual prowesss of acts like Chuck Berry and Elvis Presley, through to the kind of debauchery and drug binges championed by Motley Crue, The Rolling Stones and Gruns N' Roses. Bands have lived and died by that ideology, but with rock stalwarts such as Aeromith now substituting green tea and wheatgrass for JD, and newbie indie rockers Block Party extolling the cirtues of fresh fruit instead of cocaine on their band rider, could it be that the 'old ways' have hit the heel-haggard, cigarette littered highway?

One band percieved to be walking that well-trodden path are HIM (His Infernal Majesty). Exalted by legions of fans converted to a 'religion' of love metal, on the surface HIM appear to be basking in the glory of this hedonistic heritage. So, who better to ask whether sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll still fuels the modern day rock metal band, than their guitarist Linde Lindstrom?

When you think of HIM, 'heartagrams' copious amounst of eyeliner and overwhelming sense of dark grandeur instantly come to mind. But 29-year-old Linde, who's been playing guitar since he was 10, is somewhat different with his impressive blonde dreads and body art (he has a tattoo of his daughter on his arm, and an apologetic-looking "skull-thing some Finnish guy did when I was drunk" on his calf.)

Compromising his tall frame to get through the door of TG's make-shift interview room, toward the back of th eband's dressing area, Linde cuts an impressive yet vulnerable figure at London's Shepherds Bush Empire. Perched on a rickety chair amongst a litter of empty Coke bottles, overflowing ashtrays and crumpled crisp packets, Linde's interview surroundings are a lot less sumptuous than the plush hotels HIM frontman Ville Valo is accustomed to being interrogated in. But this seems to have no detrimental effect on the elfin-faced guitarist whatsoever.

Cross-legged and wide eyed, linde watches TG with an air of anticipation and trepidation. Not just because of the language barrier and the impending sense of 'lost in translation', but because he's caught wind of the theme of our interview. Running the risk of sounding like the sex supplement from Cosmopolitan, TG takes the plunge and dives straight in at the deep end...

    SEX
Whilre walking toward Sheperds Bush Empire, where HIM will play the only UK date on their pre-album release European tour, TG had to battle past throngs of girls and boys, some of whom had been there since five am, all hoping to get a glance of the band in the flesh.
"To me that's all very funny, because I don't think about us like that. We're not good looking at all, so i cna't see the attraction!" counters Linde with a generous dollop of modesty.

Get him onto the subject of groupies, however, and he's even more direct. "Well, I can see through all that stuff. They don't know me, they don't know any of us. It's all an illusion." He points out. "Sometimes we have loads of girls hanging around with us, but it just goes with the territory. I don't get involved with them myself, but if someone else does then it's up to them.

"What really scares me is that there are loads of underage girls out there who are being really irresponsible. They just get so carried away with stuff and don't understand the implications of what they are actually doing."

That may be so, but HIM revel in the fact that their fans are some of the most dedicated around: going to varying lengths to get close to their idols.
One way in which hundreds of them have accomplished this is by adorning their bodies with tattoos of the band's 'heartagram' logo. "Loads of out fans and friends have got the heartagram tattoo don," boasts Linde, "so Ville thought it would be a good idea to get everyone to send in photos of their tattoos to be included as artwork for the Special Edition of our new album Dark Light," before finally revealing, "I'm the only one in the band who doesn't have a heartagram tattoo!"

But it's not just fans and tattoos that act as muses for HIM. Tempestuous relationships, broken hearts and bitter ex-lovers all play their part in the band's musical output. they lyrics are as important as the music for this band, as I Love You (Prelude To Tragedy) shows: "I see it in your eyes/I feel it in your touch/ I taste it from your lips/ And baby more I love you". While Lose you Tonight paints a more vivid picture of heartbreak and longing: "I was waiting for you/ Waiting for all my life/ I've been crying for you/ Die for you all this time".

Even marriage and family life affects the band unit. When you leave behind a young family to go on extensive European and American tours, it can take its toll emotionally and mentally, as Linde knows only too well. "Of course, it's absolutley heartbreaking to leave my family all th etime when touring. My daughter is so young and all I want to do is see her. I miss her, she misses me. It goes with the job, unfortunately."

    DRUGS
The darker pages of rock history have been prockmarked with guitarists who have succumbed to the perils of drink and drugs: Jimi Hendrix choked on his own vomit after taking a reported nine Vesparax sleeping pills and speed; Red Hot Chili Peppers' Hillel Slovak died of a heroin overdose, and Dave Mustaine was dropped from Metallica due to his excessive booze and drug consumption.

So, if you don't want to end up shuffling back and forth from various AA and Narcotics Anonymous meetings, how exactly can you relax when touring? Well, if you're Linde you settle down with a nightcap and a good book. "It's difficult to wind down after a show. You can't finish a gig and go straight to bed. but if you start drinking or taking drugs it's only gonna make it worse," he offers. "I ussually have a couple of drinks and read a book or something. But it's definately not easy."

Much the same as what nickelback divulged in our TG142 interview, HIM enjoy chilling out with some good music and slugging back a few shots Jagermeister or JD and coke, before taking to the stage. "We don't have any group hugs or chants or anything like that," says linde. "We mostly just put on some music, drink some Jagermeister and talk about normal stuff."

Although, Linde warns of the difference between a few warm-up shots before playing, and a full-on boozing session. "it's only happened once, a longtime ago, but there was one time when Iwas just too drunk to play. My arms were all over the place; I couldn't play anything. My limit is a couple of shots of Jagermeister before I go on, and maybe a couple of beers, but that's it.

    ROCK 'N' ROLL
Now for the good stuff! HIM have been labelled 'love metal' since they released their fourth album of the same name, back in 2003. But with new album Dark Light, that stereotype might finally be shed. True, there's still woeful lyrics and emotion-laden solos aplenty, but there's also a heaviness to their sound that's much more overt this time round.

"Dark Light was a very easy and natural album to write. We had about two-three months before we had to head into the studio, and pretty much all the songs came together in that space of time" reveals Linde. We didn't even fight on this album, which we usually do quite a lot when recording. It's not so much that we argue about music, it's usually personal stuff that we fight over. But this time around it was very easy going and everyone seemed to get on a lot better. We do have a close relationship as a band, and we have a good rapport and don't have to compromise over anything".

Produced by Tim Palmer (Robert plnt, U2), Dark Light has more melodic rock credentials than any of HIM's previous material. "That's right," agrees Linde, "this album is very guitar driven. We've given more space for guitar solos and guitar atmospherics. We have these real heavy middle parts in almost all the songs on Dark Light", he says "and they have a kind of metallicca sound in places. We may even expand on that heaviness for future albums."

Aside from the shift towards a more guitar-orientated record, the 12-track album still carries all th ehallmarks that define each and every HIM album, which is something Linde is keen to preserve. "We put a lot of ourselves into each song and album, so it is going to sound emotional." With Wings Of A Butterfly surfacing in just about every radio playlist and download chart you can think of, it's interesting to hear that Linde's favourite songs on the album are those least likely to be chosen as singles. "Vampire Heart is really nice to play live, and Play Dead is a beautiful song. The reason I like those songs is because they just sound so beautiful".

"It's not about technique for me. I'm beyond having to show off what i can do on guitar; I'm past all that. It's all about the songs for me now, and how best i can serve them."

Linde may try play down his abilities on guitar, but trawl through HIM's (rather extensive) back catalogue, and there are some obvious examples of his sumptuous playing. "I'm proud of so many songs we've done, as a band, but from a guitarist's point of view I'm really proud of Our diabolikal Rapture, from our first album [Greatest Lovesongs vol 666]. It has a very heavy riff, and it was my own riff, so I'm very proud of it. I poured a lot of myself into that one."

Formed in Finaldn, in 1995, HIM have been releasing music for a whole decade, so it's just as well they have a rather relaxed approach to the songwriting process. "Well, Ville usually comes in with a song and then we jam on it until we come up with something we're happy with" says Linde.

"Ville plays bass guitar and he's pretty good, which is something not a lot of people know. I'm not going to teach him how to play electric guitar, but he's learned how to play chords and stuff and he uses it to help him write songs. He's getting better all the time."

Whether or not Ville's guitar playing abilities will ever have their debut at a HIM gig remains to be seen, but Linde is in no doubt that he's more than enough for the band. "I'm th eonly guitarist for the band. "I'm the only guitarist in the band and I'm happy the only guitarist in the band. It's always complicated having another guitar player to work with, so I'm really happy with it being just me."

Having grown up listening to face-painted rockers KISS ("the first song I ever learned was "Heaven on fire"), Linde still places himself in the more traditional category of players. "I consider myself a blues player, first and foremost, especially when playing solos. I play quite a lot of rhythem, too. It's my job to create this emotive wall of sound using guitars," which is something Linde did exceptionally well with his side-project Daniel Lioneye..

"The Daniel Lioneye album [King of Rock 'n' Roll,2004 (edit:I'm pretty sure it was like 2002 actually but whatever)], was me improvising all the time on guitar; all of it was recorded first take and it was completed in a few days. There's a lot of solos and heavy guitars on that album, which is something I needed to get out of my system. That material is probably the best example of who I am as a guitarist and what I can do," he says. "The reason why i released that album was because we were working on Deep Shadows And Brilliant Highlights, and I didn't like the direction it was moving in - it was too poppy and the guitars were too soft - so I wanted to get in the studio and unleash what i was feeling into my guitars."

A devoted Gibson SG man, Linde would love to one day have his own signature model. "I use Gibson SG guitars - I always have three of them on tour with me - and I have Laney amps and Boss compact pedals. But I don't liek Les Pauls or anything like that," he confesses. "I've been playing Gibsons for nearly six years now, and I've become so used to them I can't imagine playing anything else. When I'm in the studio I may use other guitars that are lying around, but when touring I always use Gobson SGs. It's pretty hard to get used to playing any other guitars after really gettin ginto an SG. I'd love my own signature gibson guitar!"

With that wish permanently on his Christmas list, and Dark Light selling by the bucket load, Linde is now looking toward the pending HIM February tour with mixed feelings. "I can't even think about the pressure we're under as a band. I don't want to think abotu what other people think about us or what perceptions they have of us and feel we should live up to when touring.

"We don't party like we used to - we're getting older. At the start of a tour we're always excited, but after a while it's like, 'Oh, just fuck off!' So it's not always sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll. You just do what you can to get you through."
