ONCE the flag wavers for Girl Power, the Spice Girls seem to have lost that oomph
Geri Halliwell (Miss Ginger herself) has been struggling to keep her singing career glowing, while Melanie Brown (or Mel B - the Scary one) seems to have been more involved with her personal demons, while Victoria Adams (once Posh) has been voted as one of the ‘pointless celebrities’ in UK.
Emma Bunton (the rather pudgy Baby) is still trudging along.
But what about Mel C? Yes what about the Sporty one?
Well, she is alive and kicking (although not kicking as hard as we would like her to be), but at least she is still singing, recording and touring.
If you were at Bukit Jalil a few weeks ago, you might have caught this woman strutting her stuff in front of thousands who attended the Anugerah Era 2005 show.
She also performed at several other venues in KL as well as in a special showcase in Penang recently.
This was Mel C’s (real name Melanie Chisholm) second time in Malaysia, and it was part of her tour to promote her latest album, Beautiful Intentions.
“After the break-up, I had to deal with depression as I came under heavy criticism by the British press.”
“They preferred to write negative things on my appearance and my personal life rather than my music. I felt so pressured. I even went for therapy.”
“Luckily I’m quite tough to overcome the problems, as I always think that life is too short to worry too much. Just do whatever you like,” she said.
A lot of hard work was put into Mel C’s new work which took him for over nine months to complete.
“In fact, I started work on this album in late 2003. You may find a lot of live sound elements, something different compared with my previous two solo albums.”
She claimed there wasn’t a dull moment in this album.
“It is simply awesome if I may say so myself. This album is a collection of pop songs with rock influence. The vocal is quite tough, but for me, this is the best way to express my feelings. I hope my fans will love them.”
The title track, Beautiful Intentions, for instance, has that kind of early 90’s guitar jam feel to it.
Melanie’s voice gets whispery over a dark, consistent guitar strum and it builds up at the chorus where it really rocks out.
Beautiful Intention is a real crowd pleaser and is easy to sing along to.
Last Night On Earth is in the same vein, but with a darker tone and it takes a while to grow on you.
Take Your Pleasure is among the best of these high energy rock numbers, with heavy guitar amplified, high powered vocals and great harmonies.
Little Piece of Me is another great one in this category. The chorus is totally catchy with a little guitar part thrown perfectly in place.
Other songs that you can find in this album are Next Best Superstar, Better Alone, You Will See, Good Girl, Never Say Never, Don’t Need This, Here & Now and You’ll Yours.
“Personally, I love the last track, You’ll Get Yours as the song is gorgeous, full of a repetitive keyboard as well as energetic chorus line.”
One of the things that should be credited to Mel C is her beautiful voice and she shows it off on her ballads better than a lot of other pop artists do.
“That ‘Girl Power’ thing is still in me, something that I gained from from my mom who is always an inspiration for me. She was a single mother and had to work in bringing me up.
Born on Dec 1, 1975 in Liverpool, England the world-famous Mel was a one time session vocalist and ballet dancer but everything changed in March 1994 when she answered an advertisement for an all-girl vocal group.
With fellow applicants, Halliwell, Adams and Brown, they formed the nucleus of what later (with the addition of fifth member Bunton) became the Spice Girls.
The biggest pop phenomenon of the late 90’s, the Spice Girls enjoyed a series of chart-topping singles like Wannabe, Say You'll Be There and 2 Become 1.
Beautiful Intentions is also the first album to be released under Melanie C’s own label, Red Girl Records.
“At this moment I don’t have any plan to sign new artistes under my label as I want to make sure this album goes well first,” she added.
