Thierry Henry believes he will be a different type of captain to Tony Adams and Patrick Vieira.
The French striker, 28 in a week, takes the armband full time this season after his compatriot left for Juventus in the summer.
Vieira was a relatively quiet captain who led the team by example whereas his predecessor, Tony Adams, had a rabble-rousing, vocal style. Henry, a passionate chatterbox by nature, believes he will be a mixture of the two.
“Tony Adams had his way,” said Henry. “He was shouting and screaming in a good way to give a lift to the team. Patrick was kind of quiet on the pitch. He was showing them what to do. I am something inbetween.”
“Ashley is a leader, Dennis is a leader, Jens and Freddie too. So yes I think I’ll be an inbetween kind of guy. I will let the players know but I also have to do what I do on the pitch.
“I mean I don’t know if you have seen but I have been shouting even without the armband. Skipper or no skipper you have to handle someone having a go at you for a good reason. You all want the team to win. That is why I was mentioning the guys like Ashley, Freddie, Jens. They also have a part to play.
“But mainly I will always put my team first. I’ll always listen to what the guys have to say and if I can help my team I will do it.”
