Investigators Aren't Sure If Fish Was Shark Or Barracuda

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- A man is recovering after being bitten by some type of fish in the water while swimming at Fort Lauderdale Beach.

Investigators said 57-year-old Dominco Iaciofano was swimming at Northeast 14th Court, just north of Sunrise, around 9:30 a.m.

Iaciofano told paramedics that it was a shark that bit him and that he had to hit the fish on the nose to get it to loosen its grip. Witnesses said the man was screaming as his wife brought him out of the water and she was covered in blood.

When he arrived at Broward General Hospital, his left arm was bandaged from hand to elbow. He had a laceration to his left wrist with a wound about 3 to 6 inches long and a half-inch deep, Local 10 reported.

He was conscious and alert and did not to appear to be in any life threatening state, according to rescuers at the scene.

"We thought maybe he hit a piece of broken glass. It had to be something fairly deep," said Bonnie Singer, who witnessed the incident.

A Broward Sheriff's Office helicopter flew along the shoreline looking for sharks in the water, but said they did not find any reason to close the beach.

According to experienced fishermen it's not uncommon to see sharks close to the shore this time of year because baitfish are close to the shore.

Investigators are still unsure whether Iaciofano was bitten by a shark or a barracuda, Local 10 reported.
