I almost got into a really heated argument with a bus driver
I was walking to the bus stop, and I was about 20 metres when the bus came, so I started walking backwards and signalled him, he drove past, and stopped a mere 20 metres away, so I had to run to catch it. There was no-one else at the bus stop, and there was no-one on the bus. So why he couldnt have just stopped is beyond me. Anyway, I get onside, and he says in a pissed off tone "The bus stop is here", and I said "Yeah, I know, I was walking here, and you came a bit earlier then I expected."

So then he asks me where I want to go, and I tell him I wanna go to the tax office, and I pull out a $20, the smallest note I have, and he says (I'll put this conversation in dialoge, it'll look neater then writing 'he said' then ' i said', blah)

    Him: I can't except that
    Me: Um... why?
    Him: Because it's a twenty.
Me: <looks over the notices near the driver dramitcally> I don't see where it says I can't pay with a twenty'
Him: It doesnt need to be said, it's common sense.
Me: Common sense? What's common sense? Carrying around legal tender?
Him: Oh you're a smart one arent you? I can't give you change for that.
Me: Then I'll take small change then, it doesnt really matter.
Him: Fine, just next time, you can't use a twenty.
    Me: Yup, fine, ok, whatever.
Him: <Lifts up the loose change part and pulls out a thick wad of $10 and $5 notes, peels off a 5 and a 10 and pretty much throws it at me>

Now if I had tried paying with a $50 note, I could understand, but a twenty? Come on, the ticket cost $3.10, if it was a 20 cent ticket, again, I could understand, but $3.10 is more then 10% of 20, so I should be able to pay with a twenty.

I hate the buses here so much. Well, not all buses, just that particular driver, he's the on no-one likes.

Bus drivers have LOTS of cash; they're just a little reluctant to show it (and I'm not sure if they should be blamed for that). They don't like having to open their purse over here either, but most of us pay with some kind of card anyway.

Where I use to live, in the suburbs of Melbourne, we have a thing there called the Metcard. And the Met is/was the transport company at the time. You would buy the card, at a machine, with either a 2 hour, daily, weekly monthly or yearly expiary date. So all you do is buy the card, then put it into a machine in the bus which checks is validity. Which was really easy.

But where I live now, because it's pretty much the country, the country people don't understand the idea of technology. So you have to know exactly where you're going in order to buy a ticket, you just can't ride around the bus out of boredom.

Anyway, because of the machine thing, there was no problem with using $20 notes, and there shouldnt be over here either, $20 isnt exactly a huge amount.

Bus drivers here don't handle cash at all. You have to drop your fare, coin only, into a box, the driver can see how much is in it, he presses a button & it falls into a safe type thing. If you pay too much they give you a change ticket, you have to bring this to their head office in the city centre to get your change refunded, it's only open during office hours. So you can probably guess than most people don't reclaim their change.

I hate buses, I cycle, walk or taxi, I hate taxi drivers too.

Ive ridden one public bus and that was for one block. Other than that I have never ridden a public transportation system. I really want to. Like a taxi.

Sounds like a very anal man. Maybe you just caught him on a bad day?

I remember the busman on my Australia trip was a complete bastard. Very militant... yelled at us for having headphones on because we couldn't hear his lovely announcements.

Then again, that's happened on Greyhound around here too.

Heh, here, you have to have exact change to ride the bus. It's annoying.
I'm kind of afraid to ride the bus now, because last time he started speeding away before my friends had even gotten on the bus. I had to get off waaaay farther down and walk back to find my friends who had disapeared.

May god bless the Tm card. I now only have to deal with the people once a week to put another 10000 on the card.

In college we used to ride free with our student id, but if you didnt have it on you it was only bills smaller than a five, and exact only after nine. Clearly posted in like 12thousand places on the bus.

Re: I almost got into a really heated argument with a bus driver

    BenDaMan - 03.06.2005, 15:55

Yeah, I wouldnt have minded if they had a notice somewhere saying that they don't accept twenties, but there isnt, it's an unwritten rule, and they're the worst rules.

Re: I almost got into a really heated argument with a bus driver

    d503 - 03.06.2005, 16:20

yeah i know. I had a bus driver once tell me to get off the bus cause i was too slow getting my card out...he saw me digging for it, and i wasn't blocking the people getting on. then he left me. it was the saddest break-up of my life

Re: I almost got into a really heated argument with a bus driver

    BenDaMan - 03.06.2005, 16:26

If a bus driver did that to me, I just wuldnt get off, I'd make him have to physically drag my off the bus, and if it came to that, I'd make sure I'd suffer some injury so I could sue the bus company and the bus driver.

I have a compulsion to obey people in uniforms. i just can't say no.

but the fact that you will be riding on the back of a kangaroo, saying "Fair dinkem" & calling her a "flamin gallah" would give you away. Not to mention your boomerang telephone & cork hat.

Re: I almost got into a really heated argument with a bus driver

    d503 - 03.06.2005, 16:47

thank god for the boomerang telephones...i would never be able to spot him without it.

also as a random fact/strike fear in small animals fact. I am able to throw a boomerang and have it come back to me....it amuzes the old people on their afternoon walks to no end.

Re: I almost got into a really heated argument with a bus driver

    jdpd - 03.06.2005, 16:50

    I've never even touched one

Re: I almost got into a really heated argument with a bus driver

great way to kill a couple of hours and get rid of irritation.

Re: I almost got into a really heated argument with a bus driver

    BenDaMan - 03.06.2005, 16:58

I know how to make a boomerang return to you, but I don't know if I can, I've never tried, I've always been too scared I'll throw it and it'll kill someone, or do damage.

And boomerangs werent really made to return, they were made to break bones of animals, like kangaroos, and emus.

Re: I almost got into a really heated argument with a bus driver

    d503 - 03.06.2005, 17:02

The first time i threw one i was shocked to see it actually start to curve....i mean shit, you just don't really think that it will happen regardless of if you understand the physics.

and the first time it came all the way back to me i jumped with glee. Still not great at catching them, but am getting better.

Re: I almost got into a really heated argument with a bus driver

    pamplemousse - 03.06.2005, 19:00

They never came back to me when I tried throwing them... they tended to hit the side of the barn regardless of which way they started out.

it took some time, and a couple of old people's head but eventually they came back

maybe you were just too close to the barn

    Certainly does.

We have extremely rude checkout people at Coles. Ugh.

You should slap them in the face.

sigh, i used to hate checking, i was hardly a polite one. I was efficient. Never openly rude, but ways to not piss off your checker:
do not go in the 10 items or less line, with 11 items
do not go into the cash only line without cash
do not allow the cashier to ring up your whole order when you know you can't afford to pay for it, ask for a subtotal
    ask if they accept checks
Do not get annoyed if the cashier asks for your id when buying booze/cigs/using a check/using a credit card.
Have your form of payment ready when you get up to the cashier.
And lastly cashiers are rarely allowed to leave their registers, they do not know what the price of the big box of cereal is off the top of their heads, so do not get annoyed when you call a stocker to go look for you and then cause the entire line to wait for your lazy ass who doesn't know how to read.

i think i may go make a people i hate post.

Well, mum was just being friendly..
And she's like; I don't want to hear it.

And then another time; mum got us some choccie biscuits for afternoon tea as a treat, and it was almost lunch time, and the checkout girl said; What a lunch.
Mum said, (laughing), no, it's not for lunch, it's for afternoon tea.
    She goes; Sure it is..

There's so many occasions, they're just the most recent..

but just remember they are people too and they have bad days. and quite frankly checking can be a shitty job. people will take all their issues with everyother department out on you. So you here lots of bitching. ANd since allyou are doing is taking their money people bitch at you to no end and treat you like a thief.

    it's not a fun job.

It was also they way they said it, you know?

Yes, I know..I'd hate to work there.
The thing is, we're not unpleasant to the staff, I respect their job and things, and a lot of them are very pleasant and efficient.
I always smile and say hi.
It's just a few people who spoil it for everyone else unfortunately..

Kiomi, customers suck, all customers suck. I mean, sure, there's a small faction who try and be nice, but it's fake nice, no-one is really happy to be talking to dipsy chick behind a checkout. And after a whole day of having <shudder> people around you, you start becoming short, and no longer care if they think you're nice.
