This is a common question in various movie fora, and I always wonder why The Best Movie Ever always seem to be one not older than ten years...
2001: A Space Odyssey is from 1968, and it's also the best ever made.

I had to see this one a few times before I figured out what the hell was going on. When I was younger the movie wasn't allowed on the TV. The one time in my parents marriage that they went to the cinema was to see this, my fathers car got stolen, he blamed the movie. I always reckoned that it just made him feel stupid.

"When I was younger the movie wasn't allowed on the TV."
Why? Hardly because of the hardcore sex!
I saw it when it was new. The first moon landing was right around the corner, I was 11, and I've been totally in love with the thing ever since!

I saw all sorts of things on Tv as a kid. Being the youngest of 10 has advantages, try telling a 19 year old that they can't watch something because of the children about.
The only film I remember being switched off was when I was about 10, myself & my brother were watching Shogun Assassin. My mother walked into the living room on time to see someones head being chopped off & blood being spattered everywhere.

I am attracted to trilogies. Matrix trilogy, Lord of the rings trilogy, Star Wars... double trilogy, or sectology? And Saving Private Ryan. (and I know that isn't a trilogy :P)

I don't think I've ever seen an Alien movie. I presume you're a fan? What did you think of Alien Vs. Predetor?

I might have to have a look at it then. It kinda pissed me off how the first two Predetors died so quickly.

you're the first person to say they like Pi, everyone else who likes requiem seems to hate it.

Maybe it was because I saw pi first?

Ben, The lord of the Rings is not a trilogy; it's one story that had to be broken up and made into three different installments because of its length. The Professor always got very mad when people referred to his work as a trilogy; it just had to be done that way because of the technical limitations of the printing & binding industry at the time.
And the same goes for the movies; it would be very impractical to offer the audience nine hours of action in one sitting.

Yes, so it's a trilogy, because it is three seperate movies. The same way Star Wars is a set of two trilogies. Even though it is the same story all the way through.

Prof. Tolkien knew the meaning of the word trilogy, which was why he got mad when LOTR was referred to as such. The definition we were taught at school, and which I just got confirmed by looking it up in my Webster's, is
"trilogy, tril'o*ji, n. A series of three works each in a certain sense complete in itself, yet together forming one connected whole."
The Star Wars stories, however, might be considered trilogies.

I really don't care what the author said, the author didnt make the movies, the author wrote the books, if the story is in one book, like the book I have, then it isn't a trilogy, but the movie is a trilogy, in each movie there is a different story, even though it follows the path of one story. Exactly the same as star wars, in each movie there is a main story, but each creating one large story.
If the star wars movies were made into one large book, all they would need to say to link up the stories would be something like '15 years later...'
