    Arizona-California trip

October 14, 2005, was an exciting morning. I had a Cessna 172SP booked for 4 days and had worked out a trip to visit my sister in northern California, a one-way destination of 512 nautical miles. Let's do it! :D

When I cross the Colorado River into California I know I'm getting somewhere. Good tailwinds so far, giving me 134 kts. and later 150! 8)

The scenery is great in the Mojave Desert. Here I see waves in the sand left behind from the days when this was the floor of a sea.

Off to my right, beyond the small range of mountains, is Danby dry lake. Dry lake. Get it? :?: What an interesting contradiction in terms. :?

Here I notice the alluvium is obviously of different color and consistency than the mountain range it was formed from. :!:

What's this? In the middle of literal nowhere is a busy mine, getting copper or aluminum or something out of the earth for us. Neat. :!: What nice contrast between the regular lines of the mine's alluvium piles and the random lines of the desert.

After 4.6 hours flying time and one short stop for fuel, here I am at Turlock, California, a quaint airport straight from the 50s. :D The usual airport dog was even lazier than normal. :P

Monday morning comes but terrible storms block my route home. I twiddle my thumbs for a day. The next day, Tuesday, I'm a day late getting my plane back, the weather hasn't improved much, but hey! I'm going.

Wow! It was an adventure. Amazingly I had smooth air all the way and no problems. :D I think they call this "scud-busting" :P When I got home I felt like Magellan. :!:

Hi Ken, nice story but tell us, how did you manage during your flight back if conditions weren't better than the day before? Did you fly above clouds? Were they broken or were you praying for a hole when you get home?

    Tell us please.

    Thanks

Hey Vagabond! I saw your story on the retrieval of the power glider. What an adventure! It sounds like you deal with nasty weather quite often. You got great pics and set your web site up very nicely.

The weather did improve some from the first day of the storm. The tops were lower.... :-) At 14,000' and later at 13,000' I was able to crawl over the top of most of it, and in between the higher spots. The day before that the tops had been over 40,000' and even I, high performance pilot that I am, couldn't have climbed over those in a 172.... :-)

    Cheers!
    Ken

Vagabond, I forgot the rest of your post about the broken clouds. Yes, they were broken most of the time and from the weather information I had I was sure the worst part of it didn't extend beyond my destination. As it turned out, when I needed to land for fuel and when I got home both places were SKC

    Happy motor-gliding :P
    Ken
