    A day in Duxford
    Hi my dears,

last year I was on a little business trip to Cambridge UK, coming up the M11 motorway from Stansted to Cambridge I realized the Duxford Imperial War Museum just next to the highway.
Quickly checking my diary, I decided to shorten up the planned meeting a bit - and called it a day at about 3 o'clock to do s.th. for my education again. As I didn't plan to go there I was not well prepared - just having the camera of my MDA2 with me - so I don't want to hear anything about the bad picture quality - just want to give you a glimbse of it - go there feel it on your own !!

A mock-up Hurricane welcomes you at the parking area:

The museum is more arrange like an open restoration workshop - volunteers from all around spend their spare time and do the restoration works.. You see a lot of senior people (some of them former WW2 pilots) spending hours on polishing tiny things :)
The other funny thing about UK is - the people have a completely different view on these machines like us Germans - they were their last hope and chance of defense against the Nazi regime - so they just love them.. I saw an old English couple walking through, she saying: "Look at these lovely Spitfires darling - aren't they just beautiful" - In Germany you always have to be a bit careful saying s.th. like this about German weaponery .. which was more used for attack rather than for defense..

but also a lot of US warbirds can be found in Duxford.. there is even a dedicated US hall we'll see later..

A "lovely P47" being prepared for a little ride..

If power would have a face..

I doubt they ever used them in the Eurppean theatre but even "lovely Corsairs" can be seen.
whenever possible - planes are restored to airworthyness - "A ship in a harbor is safe - but this is not what a ship is build for.."

The next one maybe is a bit harder to recognize for our US friends.. it's a He111 - the legendary German Heinkel Bomber - one of the most advanced aircraft designs of that age, the complete nose is a glass canopy, the bombing engineer was lying to the feets of the pilot.

Time for the P47 to have some fresh air - unfortunatly I didn't have the time to see (hear:) her flying..

When entering the US hall - the Heinkel shrinks a bit:

There's also a hall of German stuff - here a crashed Bf109 was placed:

Beside that they have some stuff like V1 launching ramps and micro submarines - funny technicals you don't see that often..

I really enjoyed my day and never had such a great business trip again - Duxford is a must for every pilot visting the UK !

    Cheers Kublai

    Duxford

You do get around, don't you Daniel :P Aviation museums are interesting as an aspect of history. One good thing comes out of wars: new technology is accelerated, and aviation is no exception.

By the way, the photos were terrible

    Ken,

I must admit - for my favour evolution could have stopped right before turbines : ) don't expect (/need) to fly in a Stealth Cessna at Mach 2 that soon : ))
