    Das Buffet ist eröffnet :

Phil's Place, the restaurant at Tauranga Bridge Marina owned by AC/DC drummer Phil Rudd, is soon to reopen.

Tauranga chef Ken Greenhill has been approached to be chef and manage the restaurant and is expected to sign his contract next week, with a view to opening the restaurant mid-December, he told the Bay of Plenty Times Weekend.

His contract is currently with his lawyer.

"I expect we will sign this up this week. I have met with Phil Rudd in the restaurant ... the reopening will be a change of direction."

He said the menu would be different and the prices lower.

"The emphasis will be on seafood. The aim is to appeal to a wide range of people, not to be elite. We want to attract families for brunch or lunch, so there will be children's meals on the menu and we will also be doing platters.

"The wide wine menu and cocktails will remain but there will also be affordable good wines by the glass."

The restaurant has been closed since July this year. At the time of closure, Mr Rudd's spokesperson Karen Gravatt, then a consultant at Tauranga law firm Cooney Lees Morgan, told the Bay of Plenty Times Weekend that the restaurant had "simply closed for a quiet period".

However, a former staff member, who did not wish to be named, told the Bay of Plenty Times Weekend that was not their understanding of the events.

After the closure, some of Mr Rudd's former restaurant staff have been represented by Danny Gelb, Auckland Employment Advocate.

Mr Gelb confirmed he had recently represented some of Mr Rudd's staff over an employment issue, but that "I cannot comment on the nature of this issue and currently I have no instructions from any of them".

The restaurant's proposed new chef Mr Greenhill, 53, is a well known Tauranga chef. He told the Bay of Plenty Times Weekend that he has been involved in the food industry for 35 years, 20 of those in Tauranga.

He owns his own catering business, Fig Jam Ltd, and is currently contracted to do catering for Club Mount Maunganui. He has also been a hospitality tutor at the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic. He started the original Mills Reef restaurant and also owned the popular Deckchair Cafe on Marine Parade, which he sold in 2010.

He moved to Tauranga 20 years ago after the sale of the famous Dunedin restaurant, 95 Filleul, which Mr Greenhill said under his management was known as one of New Zealand's best restaurants.

In his new role, he will gather a team of staff that he has worked with before.

Mr Rudd was not available for comment.

Karen Gravatt is no longer at Cooney Lees Morgan and is now a consultant with Sharp Tudhope Lawyers.

A spokesperson for her said she did not wish to comment.

AC/DC drummer ordered to pay Tauranga staff
Published: 10:25AM Tuesday March 11, 2014 Source: Fairfax

AC/DC drummer Phil Rudd has been ordered to pay more than $72,000 for throwing a rockstar tantrum and sacking his restaurant workers.

Three employees of Phil's Place in Tauranga were left so distressed and humiliated by the incident they became depressed, and struggled to find new employment.

In its decision, the Employment Relations Authority found Alice Kiwa, Janelle Kiwa and Hayden Clark were all unjustifiably dismissed by Rudd.

On July 18, 2012, Rudd went to his restaurant and asked Clark for an antipasto platter to be delivered to his boat.

But his security guard came in and said the meal should be taken to Rudd's aircraft hangar instead.

An angry Rudd later kicked the back door of the restaurant, swore at the staff, and told them to drop what they were doing.

He then kicked the rubbish tin and left the restaurant, slamming the door.

Two days later a meeting was held at Rudd's lawyer's offices, where his accountant apologised on his behalf. Alice and Janelle Kiwa could not attend that meeting.

Another meeting was held to discuss the future of the restaurant, and employees were told Rudd's preference was to close over the winter.

The Kiwas and Clark then received a letter advising their casual employment was terminated, and were warned any breach of confidentiality provisions would be treated seriously.

Authority member Tania Tetitaha described the dismissal as "abrupt and harsh", and Rudd's behaviour as "scary and intimidating".

Alice Kiwa had been affected so badly she was diagnosed with depression and placed on a sickness benefit.

It was "humiliating" having to borrow money from friends and relatives while she searched for jobs, and represented a "significant loss of mana and status", Tetitaha said.

Janelle Kiwa was made homeless as a result of the dismissal, and was also diagnosed with depression.

She had also been subjected to false accusations she had stolen from Rudd, which made it difficult for her to find new employment.

Clark was left in a similar position, and had to borrow significant amounts of money from friends and family to meet his commitments.

He had to leave town in order to secure employment in a "less advantageous job with reduced status".

Rudd denied the three were dismissed, but said even if they were dismissed, it was rectified by his apology through his accountant.

But Tetitaha said the apology was insincere.

"There was no evidence what the apology aimed to rectify other than attempt to excuse bad behaviour," she said.

"It did not appear to specifically address the hurt and humiliation these applicants had suffered."

For lost income, Phil's Place must pay Alice Kiwa $4872, Janelle Kiwa $4536 and Clark $9692.40. Each applicant would also receive $15,000 for distress, and a total of $8500 in legal costs.
