Origin: Cairhien.

Alatariel Elsenar was born in Cairhien, as the youngest daughter to a minor noble and his Andoran wife.
Being a Cairhienin, she was supposed to learn the Game of Houses from she was nothing but a little child, but her Andoran mother refused to let her children learn the Game, claiming that it was bad for them. Therefore, Alatariel never became a typical Cairhienin, putting more meanings into things said and done that what the purpose of the thing was. In fact, her childhood was a calm one; she grew up with her family on their manor close to the Spine of the World, undisturbed by other nobles and their playing.
Alatariel was a bright child, learning quickly and able to think faster than most. She was also a beautiful girl, and her parents' pride.
One day, when Alatariel was about 16 years, though, something happened that would change her life for ever.
Her older brother and best friend, 17-year old Methin, slipped on the ice when he was trying to get into the house on a cold winter-day, and he hit his head, cracking his skull. A Wise Woman was summoned, but she could not do anything to make him wake up from the coma he had fell into, and she said that the boy would most certainly die.
Alatariel was heartbroken, and that night, she sat next to her brother, buried in prayer and tears.
Exhausted she fell asleep, only to wake up and find her brother cold and stiff.
With a shriek of pain, she started to cry, rocking forwards and backwards, demanding to get her brother back. Alas, there was nothing she could do - her brother was dead, and she just had to accept it. Everyone told her that.
But she couldn't accept it, wouldn't accept it, and two days later, she ran away from home, to Tar Valon, home of the famous Aes Sedai, hoping that somehow, they could help her to bring her brother back.
Unfortunately, she soon learned that the Aes Sedai could not control life and death, and they crushed her childish hopes for ever.
She also learned something that made her heart threaten to break out from her chest: she could learn how to channel.
Alatariel did not know what to do - one part of her wanted to return to her family, to hate the Aes Sedai for not being able to bring her brother back, but the other part told her to stay, to become one of these mysterious women of the stories and tales she had loved since she was a child.
And then she, Alatariel Elsenar, previously known as the youngest daughter of Steleth and Enaina Elsenar, wrote her name into the novice book.
Bright as she was, Alatariel spent only four years as a novice, and three as an Accepted before being raised to the rank of Aes Sedai.
She was a happy girl, though she was known for falling into silence sometimes, just staring in front of her, but none of the novices or Accepted, and few of the Aes Sedai, knew that those times were the times she felt a longing for her family, especially for her brother.
At times like those, though, she gritted her teeth and forced herself to stand up, to do her best. For her brother's sake.
When she was raised to Aes Sedai, she surprised everyone with choosing the Red Ajah.
The lean, not-so-tall girl was not a person people would have guessed to go Red; she was fond of men though not overly fond of them, friendly and patient. Nothing like a typical Red, though that was where she felt at home, where she wanted to be.
During her years as a novice and an Accepted, she had got to know Lyuna Ishizu, and they had become friends. When Lyuna was asked to become the Amyrlin for the people Watching the Tower, in Manetheren, the other Red sister asked if Alatariel wanted to come with them, and in Manetheren, she became the Mistress of Novices, fair yet strong, respected by novices and Accepted both.
