Riviera Beach -- Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officers Wednesday night found the man who filmed the apparent torture of a state protected eagle ray last year on the shores of Peanut Island.

The controversial video was posted on the video sharing Web site YouTube, and came to the attention of law enforcement recently. It shows the eagle ray flopping around as a group of men surround it, and one cuts off its tail before killing it, officials said.

The video maker removed the 90 second video Tuesday. When Fish and Wildlife officers knocked on the Miami man's door he was visibly shaken, Capt. Jeff Ardelean said.

"He was fully cooperative," Ardelean said. "He was shaken by our presence and by the whole ordeal because of the threats he started receiving."

People started sending the man, who is in his 20s, death threats online. FWC officials tracked him down through Internet records. He was not part of the group that killed the eagle ray and does not face charges. His identity was not released because of the threats and because he is a witness, Ardelean said.

He told investigators that he was camping on the beach with friends when the group of men came in on a boat, netted the eagle ray then brought it ashore where they killed it. They later ate it, Ardelean said. The suspects are believed to be from Palm Beach County.

Criminal charges can range from misdemeanor killing of a protected species to felony animal cruelty. Anyone with information on the eagle ray attack should call the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, 888-404-3922. If the information leads to an arrest, the informant might be entitled to a $500 reward.

Riviera Beach -- The threats were frightening: They wanted to "disembowel" him like the eagle ray for filming its killing.

That's what people wrote to the 22-year-old video maker's YouTube online account, he said at a media conference at the Riviera Beach Marina on Friday.

He was in fear for his life, but wrote back to all the threats and unsavory comments that he had nothing to do with the handful of adults bent on killing the state-protected eagle ray and eating it.

The Miami man would only give his name as Eddie, for fear of further threats. He lost his job as a mailroom clerk in a credit card company about a week after the Aug. 19, 2006, video got media attention last month.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission launched an investigation into the killing after investigators found the video on the Web site. Eddie, who is not charged in the incident, took it down when he learned of the investigation.

Fish and Wildlife investigators are still looking for the fish's killers, and hope Friday's event prompts someone to come forward. Depending on intent, charges can range from a misdemeanor killing of a protected species to felony animal cruelty. Depending on the nature of the charges, the statute of limitations ranges from one to five years.

"Step one in eating something is killing it," Eddie said. "I'm sure there is a more humane way of killing something but that was what they were doing."

New details were scant, but Fish and Wildlife spokesman Officer Jorge Pino said there has been a public outcry.

In a still shot from the video, a suspected fish killer had on what appears to be camouflage shorts, a goatee, and tattoos on either shoulder. He spoke Spanish and investigators believe he lives in Palm Beach County.

"These individuals may not have known they were committing a crime but ignorance of the law is no excuse," Pino said. "They need to learn a lesson here."

Eddie, an avid snorkeler, said he made his first trip to Peanut Island that day and was camping out with friends when someone spotted the eagle ray swimming offshore. The men netted it and left it to flop on the sand after cutting off its barbs. Eddie said he didn't think anything was wrong while filming with his digital Casio camera until a child stuck one of the fish's own barbs into its head. He said the men didn't have malicious intent, but investigators want to speak with the killer to clarify that, Pino said.

"We think that with the public's help we can identify this person," he said.

Anyone with information on the eagle ray attack should call Fish and Wildlife at 888-404-3922. If the information leads to an arrest, an informant could be entitled to a $1,000 reward.
