BOCA GRANDE -- A catch-and-release shark tournament on Thursday and Friday turned out be a letdown. Only six boats participated.
Captain Don Mull Jr. of Florida Fishing Charters in Boca Grande publicized the "Grande Bite" tournament as an event that would draw between 50 and 100 boats and would be the first of many annual tournaments.
His Web site touted $100,000 in prizes, including a $50,000 grand prize for the biggest shark. But the fine print explained that those awards were based on the participation of 100 boats, each paying $2,500.
Mull said the grand prize wound up at $3,500 but the total in cash and prizes was $5,000.
The tournament was expected to benefit the American Cancer Society and Mote Marine Laboratory's research efforts. Mull said he did not know how much money would be donated to the American Cancer Society.
Mote scientists did not hold any hard feelings about the low attendance.
The scientists participated in the event by tagging the sharks caught by the fishermen.
By noon Friday, they had tagged fewer than 10 sharks in the tournament.
"We're looking on this as kind of a prototype year," said Bob Hueter, director of the Center for Shark Research. "In some ways, I am kind of glad we're dealing with a small number of boats."
First-year events sometimes do not draw large crowds.
For example, Mote had a dismal turnout for its first Gulf Coast Shark Census in 1989, Hueter said.
Participation in the census, which ran like a tournament, except the sharks were released and tagged, eventually skyrocketed. It continued until 1998.
Hueter said he would not give up on Mull's tournament.
"I would not call this a flop just yet," he said.
Mull said he thought more than 50 boat crews would participate and he blamed weather forecasts for the low turnout.
He said people pulled out after hearing on Wednesday that there would be a 60 percent chance of thunderstorms on Thursday.
Mull said he will likely change the way he runs the event next year. The entry fee will probably be lower and the tournament may last only one day, he said.
"We may have stubbed our toe," Mull said, but he pledged to come back next year. "The only way this won't happen again is if I die."
