Shark-fishing contest on hold
A shark-fishing competition off Durban has been called off after protests from scientists and marine conservation groups.
The competition was due to start this weekend, with cash prizes for killing the biggest sharks.
However, the organisers have agreed to postpone the event for the time being, and said that the competition would be organised on a catch-and-release basis if another was held in future.
The decision follows a meeting earlier this week at which fishermen were addressed by senior Durban marine scientist Bruce Mann, who also chairs the SA Marine Linefish Management Association.
Mann told the fishermen he was opposed to "bonanza-type" competitions that targeted vulnerable species such as sharks, which are slow-growing, slow-maturing and have a low reproductive rate.
He said shark numbers worldwide were in decline because of overfishing, but he acknowledged that certain shark types seemed to be increasing in KwaZulu-Natal, especially on the South Coast.
Fishermen who organised the competition complained that sharks were "stealing" fish off their lines, almost as soon as they were hooked.
"Some reports mention that sharks can be seen under the boats waiting to grab fish as they are brought to the surface," according to the latest newsletter of the Natal Deep Sea Rod and Reel Club.
Mann said: "The answer is not to go out there and decimate sharks. Realistically, a competition targeting sharks is not going to reduce the shark population to the extent that it's going to solve the problem, and it is going to result in a huge outcry from conservationists and the diving fraternity."
In a statement after the meeting, the organisers said the event would be postponed in recognition of the good work done by the Oceanographic Research Institute, the SA Marine Linefish Management Association, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, the Natal Sharks Board and the Marine and Coastal Management division.
