Toothed whales owe their deep dive ability to the power of echolocation, according to a new study by two researchers from the University of California at Berkeley.
Researchers David Lindberg and Nicholas Pyenson said the ancestors of today's sperm whales evolved the ability to find prey by echolocation, as nautiluses and squids, their primary prey, rose to the surface waters only under cover of darkness.
Once the whales evolved this adaptation, it became possible for them to track molluscs into the ocean depths during the day.
For their research, the scientists analysed whale fossils, looking for the presence of bones specially adapted for each trait.
They found that early whales from the Oligocene - between 34 and 23 million years ago - had bones conducive to echolocation but not those associated with deep diving.
The research appears in the New Scientist magazine. (ANI)
