Talking to another friend on fRO, someone who doesn't like renewal much and has come over form iRO for a while (first person I've met who doesn't like renewal, but interesting to get different views).
She says that there are some items worth buying up if you can. Especially weapons with high ATK.
Hunting Spear - http://rocheck.de/index.php?si=detail&myitemid=48 - is recommended as it becomes worth a lot more after renewal.

Your Friend is right, weapons with high atk will do the job in Renewal
Hunter Class - Orc Archer Bow and later Elven Bow
Merchant Class - Hurricane Fury or Carga Mace
Shura - Carga Mace
Shadow Chaser - Elemental Sword
Mage Class is looking for high matk like Kronos , Soul Staff, Staff of Destruction.
Of course it depends on if you play woe or only pvm.
Also The Eden Group Quest gives you equip that is not bad. If you want to try a new class you can level with that easy.
Interessting are here the Loots to collect for the Leveling Quests like Maneater Blossom.

With Renewal you level mostly on Monster that are same level as you or higher. On This Page you can see how the new exp and drop system works. Also all Monster with level and stats.

As You can See, Raydric for example will become a level 115 Monster so it is not so easy anymore to get a card.

Genetic gets a skill called Change Material that allows to make new things from looting. Most of them is crab, but some are interessting so you could keep that loot to sell later or make a Genetic yourself

All Sort of Hair is also nice to keep cause later Miyabi Doll becomes level 85 and Marionette level 90.
On Cards i would save Raydric, Isilla and Vanberk. Ray becomes level 115, Isilla 124 and vanberk 123.
So it is not so easy then to get them.
